  1. Knez purchase could signal more Ohio City development A suburban homebuilder buying the landmark Bodnar funeral home building in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland signals another potential change for lower Lorain Avenue: new residential development. Although Concord-based builder Bo Knez confirms his Triban Investment LLC owns the property, 3929 Lorain Avenue, he is not ready to discuss what he hopes to do with it. Cuyahoga County land records show Triban on Jan. 6 paid $700,000 for the building. The structure sits on a sea of parking about a half-acre in size, which is huge in the context of an urban neighborhood. However, his B.R. Knez Construction has been busy building single-family homes just south of Lorain. Significantly, a few hundred feet north of Lorain, Knez through Howard Hanna is marketing Greenbriar, a city-approved 11-unit townhouse project with properties costing upwards of $300,000. Part of the site is at 4019 Bridge Avenue, and part of it is on the east side of Randall Road, which becomes West 41st Street south of Lorain. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20170115/NEWS/170119858/knez-purchase-could-signal-more-ohio-city-development
  2. How many people? I've held private dining events in the upstairs of Tremont Taphouse. The one room is perfect for 20 people or less. If you could get the whole upstairs they could probably accommodate 30-35 guests. I think Luxe over in Gordon Square has a private dining room as well. Excellent food right in your price range.
  3. Spirit Airlines adds new, daily service from Cleveland Hopkins to New Orleans CLEVELAND, Ohio - Spirit Airlines is adding a daily, nonstop flight to New Orleans from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, starting in May. Hopkins hasn't had a daily flight to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport since United Airlines cut the route in 2014, part of the carrier's broader plan to close its hub in Cleveland. The new route starts May 25, with a departure from Cleveland at 6 a.m., arriving in New Orleans at 7:25 a.m. The return trip departs from New Orleans at 7:50 p.m., arriving in Cleveland at 11:20 p.m. New Orleans is Spirit's 11th nonstop destination from Cleveland Hopkins. http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/01/spirit_airlines_adds_new_daily.html#incart_river_home
  4. Allegiant will fly from Cleveland Hopkins to Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida, starting in May CLEVELAND, Ohio - Allegiant Air, the low-cost carrier that starts flying from Cleveland Hopkins next month, will add Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida, to its roster of destinations, starting in May. Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, on the Florida Panhandle, will be Allegiant's 11th destination from Cleveland. The route will operate seasonally, starting May 12 and ending sometime in the fall, with twice weekly flights between the two cities, on Fridays and Mondays. It is the first time in at least a decade that Clevelanders will be able to fly nonstop to Northwest Florida, a popular beach destination. http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/01/allegiant_will_fly_from_clevel.html#incart_river_home

  7. Jo Jo Carloni's Italian Restaurant Serves Up Red-sauce Comfort in Olmsted Falls, and Will Soon Do the Same in Ohio City Although we all lived 20 miles or more away, as soon as we landed inside Jo Jo Carloni's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria in Olmsted Falls, we immediately felt like neighborhood regulars. Despite its zip code, the snug space had all the Old World charm of our favorite spag-and-ball joints in Little Italy, where descriptors like "gourmet" and "trendy" are replaced by "hearty" and "comforting" and "I can't believe I ate the whole thing." I normally don't drive 40 minutes across town to dine at small-town Italian-American restaurants regardless of how good they sound. But when I learned that owners John and Jennifer Minkiewicz had been tapped to open up a new place in the splashy West 25th Street Lofts development in the heart of Ohio City, I rearranged my schedule, rounded up some friends, and made the trip. http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/jo-jo-carlonis-italian-restaurant-serves-up-red-sauce-comfort-in-olmsted-falls-and-will-soon-do-the-same-in-ohio-city/Content?oid=5008179#
  8. It's not closing for long.... Ohio City’s Bonbon Pastry to Become Aladdin’s Eatery Spinoff Boaz Café Courtney Bonning has sold Bonbon Pastry & Cafe, her five-year-old Ohio City business, to Fady Chamoun of Aladdin's Eatery. Bonbon will close its doors after New Year’s Eve and Chamoun will reopen the space as Boaz Café by Aladdin’s Eatery as quickly as the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th of the year, depending on what needs to be done. “I am a big supporter of Cleveland neighborhoods,” Chamoun says. “I’ve wanted to do something closer to downtown for a while.” The menu at Boaz Café will look familiar to fans of Aladdin’s Eatery, but it will be more narrowly focused around a core selection of fresh, fast and healthy Middle Eastern eats, he notes. The all or largely organic menu will have hummus, baba, tabouli, fattoush, falafel and shawarma sandwiches. There also will be fresh fruit juices and smoothies. Down the line, grab-and go items like salads, spreads and sandwiches might be added. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2016/12/26/ohio-citys-bonbon-pastry-to-become-aladdins-eatery-spinoff-boaz-cafe
  9. First look: Astoria Cafe & Market opens in Cleveland's Gordon Square (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Long before chefs starting serving up terms like artisanal and hand-crafted, you could actually find such items easily in the area's import shops. For decades, they were suppliers for Old World cooking - done in the home, by immigrants and first-generation members of Cleveland's rich ethnic community. Astoria Market and Cafe - 5417 Detroit Ave., Cleveland -- sets out to continue that connection, but also turn new people on to Old World cuisine while providing a new take on it all. The just-opened 5,000-square-foot space in Gordon Square comes with a bar-restaurant on one side and a market that specializes in cheeses, meats and Mediterranean imports on the other. The twist here, of course, is you can order off the restaurant menu or buy something in the market and bring it to the restaurant. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/12/first_look_astoria_cafe_market.html#incart_m-rpt-2
  10. 95 Lake is the Edgewater project.
  11. of course they will do fine. they will make their money. Is that a lifetime appointment? Of course they are pumping up the excitement for this project...it makes them more money. And using free publicity, that is novel idea. It is pretty simple...drive by this, and drive by the apartments on Detroit around w.32. One of these things is not like the other. I am happy to have more people in the neighborhood. I don't mind people making money. This could have been a much higher quality build, especially for the rents being asked. K & D sold Stonebridge. They were all excited for that. The build quality was terrible, and everybody is paying the price....including them that is how bad that was...the developer had to come up shooting to fix it, that is almost unheard of. It is what it is, it is going up, no stopping it now. I don't expect you to be in charge of maintenance in 10 years, if you are I will buy you a beer, I am not going anywhere. BUT I am also not going to buy into how great the construction is....it isn't. I don't think it's wise to compare a singular 56 unit apartment building to a large 10acre neighborhood changing development.

  15. Flats East Bank poised to bring three new tenants to former Crop spaces (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If all goes according to plan, Akron-based Thirsty Dog Brewing and two concepts developed by Cleveland chef Dante Boccuzzi and restaurateur Rick Doody will move into the former Crop entertainment complex at the Flats East Bank. On Thursday, a city design-review committee is scheduled to examine plans for the businesses, which would each take a space in the three-venue complex that housed Crop Sticks, Crop Rocks and On Air. In August, the Crop complex announced that it would close in September - barely a year after it had opened. Initially seen as an anchor for the Flats East Bank, the hulking space proved to be too big for a single operator. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/11/flats_east_bank_poised_to_brin.html#incart_river_home

  17. Heck's Cafe to open in downtown Cleveland as part of Beacon tower project (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Heck's Café has developed a devoted following over four decades, even as it operated quietly, nestled amid the residential homes of Ohio City. Now, the classic Cleveland spot known for its gourmet burgers is ready to open amid the skyscrapers and the buzz. The bar-restaurant will open a new location downtown on the ground floor of the 515 Euclid Ave. parking garage. The seven-story garage is part of a new project by Cleveland developer Stark Enterprises that includes a 19-floor apartment tower. "We wanted to partner up with a local operator, and Heck's has done a great job in Ohio City," says Ezra Stark, chief operating officer for Stark Enterprises. "They've done very well with their brunches and breakfasts." http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/11/hecks_cafe_to_open_downtown_cl.html
  18. Santorini Owner to Launch Late-Night Diner Concept in Warehouse District Space We were sad to learn earlier this week that Tommy Karakostas had shuttered his contemporary Greek restaurant Santorini, but the good news is that he is not going anywhere. Instead, he is rebranding the space and will reopen it within a few weeks. “It lasted almost two years,” says Karakostas, who also operates the popular Greek Village eateries. “I take a lot of pride and responsibility in all my places. Maybe the prices were too high, maybe people weren’t used to that type of Greek cuisine because it was a little out of the ordinary from what people are used to here. But whatever the reason, it just didn’t make it and I had to make the tough decision to shut it down.” http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2016/11/17/santorini-owner-to-launch-late-night-diner-concept-in-warehouse-district-space

I think it would take 81 sellouts to get Cleveland back to Top 10 status, especially now that Progressive seats less. It would be nice not be 30 out of 32 though. I believe they were 24th in 2008 after the 07 ALCS. Of course that 08 team collapsed and attendance went right down with it. They need two or three competitive seasons to get the season ticket base large enough so that you don't have 9000 people attending in late April. Got to believe the more losses the Browns pile up it's more likely people may switch over to the Tribe as well. I think as Lindor develops, he will be must see and will sell tickets on his own. Im really hopeful he is here a very long time Lindor is under their control through 2021.

State grant aids Cleveland Metroparks' lakefront connector trail (photos) CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Metroparks system has won an $850,000 Clean Ohio Grant that will help cover a connecting trail between Edgewater and Whiskey Island. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources administers the grant program. This follows receipt of an $8 million federal TIGER grant in late July. The name is an acronym for Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery. The state money is not for a bridge that would connect Wendy Park on Whiskey Island to the existing Willow Avenue Bridge. Joe Roszak, the Metroparks chief operating officer, said the trail covered by the state grant will allow people at Edgewater to get to the proposed bridge. That span and the Willow Avenue Bridge will tie the lakefront parks to the Lake Link Trail, which is to designed go south through the west bank of the Flats to the Towpath Trail at Scranton Road Peninsula. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/10/state_grant_aids_cleveland_me.html#incart_river_home

  23. Cuyahoga County putting a renewed focus on public transit CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cuyahoga County Council is upping its efforts to include public transit in the local conversation about funding and transportation. County Council is considering creating a subcommittee on public transit to explore "possible sources for countywide and regional funding for public transportation," said Joseph Nanni, County Council's Chief of Staff. "Council President [Dan] Brady and other members are very concerned about past and potential future cuts to public transit," Nanni said. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority this year already had to raise fares and cut service 3 percent and faces even deeper cuts in 2018 when it will lose funding from the sales and use tax on Medicaid managed care organizations. At that point, RTA could have to cut service up to 10 percent and lay off 150 people, RTA CEO Joe Calabrese has estimated. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/10/cuyahoga_county_putting_a_renewed_focus.html#incart_river_home
