Herb 'n Twine Sandwich Co. Days from Opening in Former Speak in Tongues Spot It appears that one of the projects we’ve been following since last spring is nearing the finish line. Herb 'n Twine Sandwich Co., located in the old Speak in Tongues space at 4309 Lorain Avenue, is on track to open before the end of the month. Owner Brendon Messina, who last worked alongside chef Jill Vedaa at Rockefeller’s in Cleveland Heights, describes the shop as a casual quick-serve stop for local residents, commercial tenants, and anybody else looking for a wholesome, delicious lunch or dinner. “There are a lot of places to sit down and eat in Ohio City, but there aren’t a lot of grab-and-go spots,” he explains. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2015/11/17/herb-n-twine-sandwich-co-days-from-opening-in-former-speak-in-tongues-spot

^ Really? But now that the national economy is growing again, Pittsburgh is lagging behind, according to a report from the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. The Pittsburgh region does not just lag behind growth in other U.S. cities, but also those of the rest of the world. When researchers at Brookings ranked 300 metropolitan areas worldwide, Pittsburgh came in 253rd for its rate of growth in 2014. In a look at growth since the turn of the century, Pittsburgh had an annualized employment gain of 0.1 percent since 2000 — a third of the national average — while the gross metropolitan product per person for the region from 2000 to 2014 grew more than twice as quickly as the national gross domestic product. http://www.post-gazette.com/business/pittsburgh-company-news/2015/01/23/Growing-U-S-economy-leaving-Pittsburgh-behind-report-says/stories/201501230050

Is it finally happening? Given the streets described, sounds like it's related to the recent property transactions I mapped yesterday (now on the prior page of this thread). No renderings were attached to the agenda which seems strange considering every other item listed has pics. Hmmm...

yeah otto mosers and the rathskeller moved off e4th and mosers upped their game, but what about the rathskeller? it moved to prospect, but i dk if it is still around? Chicago's Home of Chicken & Waffles, a popular Soul Food restaurant with three locations in Chicago, will open its next location in Downtown Cleveland. The owners say they have been following our city’s progress and couldn’t wait to dip their toes in our bubbling market. The restaurant will be claiming the 4,000-square-foot space at 1144-46 Prospect Avenue, which is the current home of the Rathskeller. That longstanding bar, if you recall, previously was displaced from its previous home on East Fourth Street by redevelopment. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2015/04/01/chicago-based-soul-food-joint-to-plant-flag-in-downtown-cleveland

Sorry, but that's all they told us...This news did come directly from Tracey Nichols. I'm sure we'll be hearing more details very soon! Tracey sounded optimistic this would help move financing forward.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
Repost: Migration Now, Migration Tomorrow, Migration Forever If there's one thing I've learned over the past couple years, it's that migration patterns are the building blocks of cities. People, and the things that attract them to the city, shape the city form and future. People, and the things that repel them from the city, shape the city form and future, too. Urbanists owe it to themselves to understand earlier migration forces and their impacts, so we can understand the context of current transitions. A recent deep dive I did into scholarly research on the relationship of the African-American Great Migration, white flight and the subsequent impact on central cities gives a great sense of where cities have been and where they're headed in the near future. http://cornersideyard.blogspot.com/2015/10/repost-migration-now-migration-tomorrow.html

Everybody’s Favorite Beer-Based Donut Brewnuts Lands a Permanent Home Two years ago Shelley Fasulko and John Pippin introduced Clevelanders to Brewnuts and the response has been nothing short of remarkable. How could it not have been? These are local beer-flavored donuts we’re talking about after all. “There was this perfect storm going on with the beer boom that was happening in Cleveland and all of these great artisan food businesses starting up,” Fasulko says of the concept’s genesis. “Our idea was to come up with a Cleveland version of something really unique to do with donuts.” http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2015/10/27/everybodys-favorite-beer-based-donut-brewnuts-lands-a-permanent-home

Detroit and 65th is really turning into something special. The addition of Brewnuts to this corner is next level stuff.. Gordon Square set to explode with new pop-ups, pinball, poutine and more A host of highly anticipated eateries and pop-up ventures is set to take the funky Gordon Square neighborhood to the next level and beyond. "Within two months we are poised to have nearly every vacant space on Detroit from West 54th to 73rd full of activity, which is really exciting," says Chad Jones, director of marketing for the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO). On the verge of opening are three pop-ups that are coming to the corridor courtesy of a contest held earlier this year. Fortunately, the judges were unable to pick just one winner from the 27 applicants. "We had so many qualified and talented people for the pop-up competition and we had some extra open spaces," says Jones, referring to DSCDO's Gordon Square real estate portfolio. "We were able to name basically three winners." http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/gordonsquarepopups102615.aspx

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
What's behind the rise in Cincinnati shootings? This year has been one of the bloodiest in recent memory in Cincinnati. By early this month more than 320 people had been shot this year within the city limits, with nearly 50 dying from those wounds. And while the city's homicide rate has remained steady compared with 2014, the overall shooting totals are 30 percent higher than at this point last year. The victims range in age from 4-year-old Martaisha Thomas, who was shot in the head but survived in late July, to Edward Rose, 87, who died at the hands of his son, who then shot and killed himself. The surge has riled politicians in City Hall and is said to have been a factor in the firing of the city's police chief earlier this month. http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/09/17/behind-rise-cincinnati-shootings/32520965/

Cleveland: Downtown: Justice Center Complex Replacement
Justice Center: A study is underway to see what it would cost to build a new Justice Center, including a jail, Budish said. The study, which would include funding options, should be completed by the end of the year. "The Justice Center is sitting on the most, in my view, important piece of property in the city of Cleveland," he said. "That property could be much better utilitized." It would cost hundreds of millions to repair the current building, he said. He wasn't sure whether locations would be identified in the study, but he said many areas in the county would be available. http://www.cleveland.com/cuyahoga-county/index.ssf/2015/10/cuyahoga_county_executive_armond_budish_proposes_budget_cuts_to_metrohealth_and_mental_health_board.html#incart_river_home

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Thieves trying to break in while residents home Thieves are targeting homes in Rocky River. Police say they're trying to break into houses, and it seems to be a pattern in other suburbs on the west side, too. Police say the suspect or suspects try to enter houses at night, even when people are home. They are cutting off screens to windows and doors to try to get inside. Now residents are having a hard time sleeping at night. On the south side of Rocky River, everyone seems to know their neighbors. Now they're watching out for each other even more. "Neighbors have all been talking and texting and getting the word out," said one neighbor who didn't want to be identified. Police say thieves have broken into or tried to break into several homes off Wooster Road. http://www.cleveland19.com/story/30244514/thieves-target-screens-in-string-of-attempted-break-ins
