  1. The 'upskilling' of Cleveland's workforce Not having a reason to be is the human crisis. Developing worth is the cure. Such is the case not just for people, but for cities. Cities without uses become ghost towns, with a midway existence called “the shrinking city.” Cleveland, like many Rust Belt cities, is a so-called shrinking city. For decades now the region has fought against the anticipation of disappearing. This fight is called “economic development.” Often, development policies are more instinctive than strategic. Cleveland has lost jobs, mostly manufacturing jobs. The solution, then, is to simply go get those jobs back. But manufacturing as a share of the total U.S. labor force is at an all-time low (8.69%). In Cleveland, it’s 11.7%, down from 17.1% in 2000. This does not mean manufacturing is unimportant to Cleveland. It just means that when you are in the job of job creation, new policies are needed. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20151008/BLOGS05/151009844/the-upskilling-of-clevelands-workforce

  5. Cuyahoga County needs new downtown courthouse and jail, officials say CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cuyahoga County officials have all but concluded that they must build a jail and courthouse in downtown Cleveland and then demolish the 40-year-old Justice Center between Lakeside and St. Clair avenues. County Executive Armond Budish has yet to report what he wants to do with the Justice Center, but a representative of the Budish administration and County Council members say spending money on renovations seems foolish. "The thing is falling apart," said council member Michael Gallagher. "I have not heard an argument that makes sense of putting money into the facility. It was built to last, designed to last, but didn't. It is poorly designed and has not lived up to what it was supposed to be." http://www.cleveland.com/cuyahoga-county/index.ssf/2015/09/cuyahoga_county_needs_new_downtown_courthouse_and_jail_officials_say.html#incart_river_home

  7. The density in Ohio City is going to be amazing. Large apartment buildings are being constructed at 32nd Detroit, 30th Clinton, 20th Lorain, 25th Detroit, and 25th-28th Church. Not to mention the new townhomes on Columbus, Abbey, 37th Clinton, and Case's 15 units on 31st and Franklin. Did I miss any? If I had more time I would add up the total number of units. This is impressive stuff!
  8. Huge! Pitt Ohio to bring more than 200 jobs, $7 million payroll to Parma PARMA, Ohio – Pitt Ohio plans to build a 23-acre complex that will eventually bring 240 jobs to Parma, which city officials are calling the largest job-creation project in a decade. "Any time you have a great company like Pitt Ohio wanting to locate in your city you want to partner with them on projects of this magnitude and that's what we've done," Mayor Tim DeGeeter said. "With additional jobs that obviously means additional tax base for us, and that's so important." http://www.cleveland.com/parma/index.ssf/2015/09/pitt_ohio_to_bring_more_than_2.html#incart_river

Separately, Stark issued a news release last Friday, Aug. 14, saying that it had retained the Cleveland unit of the Chicago-based The Walsh Group to provide preconstruction services for nuCLEus. Ted Kramer, vice president of construction at Stark’s Arbor Construction unit, said in the release that Walsh’s experience in high-rise multifamily and high-rise mixed-use construction will be “invaluable” as Arbor plans for nuCLEus. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20150817/BLOGS14/150819832 Here's the release: http://www.starkenterprises.com/the-walsh-group-named-preconstruction-manager-for-nucleus-project/

  18. Long lines at Cleveland Hopkins Int'l Airport during construction; Hopkins: Passengers increased Cleveland Hopkins International Airport released a statement Friday afternoon noting that the airport has had an increase in passengers for the first time since United's service reductions in 2014. “Cleveland Hopkins has bounced back better than any other airport that’s lost its hub status,” said Airport Director Ricky Smith. “This isn’t just something we’re saying here at CLE, it’s something that industry experts across the country are saying.” Last year in May, the airport had 399,502 scheduled seats; this year in May, it had 445,177 scheduled seats. This is an 11.4 percent increase. http://www.newsnet5.com/lifestyle/travel/long-lines-greet-passengers-at-cleveland-hopkins-international-airport-during-construction
  19. Unlike you I haven't made any claims....who are the boogeymen?
  20. Dan Gilbert is your best example? Name your other anti rail boogeymen.
  21. ^Which leaders? No, you missed my point ... entirely. Where did I mention RTA in my post, other than to say the problem is bigger than Joe C? My post stated the community has an anti-rail mindset, and that it goes beyond 1-man (or agency in this case). I addressed you statement about "without private philanthropy," noting that private philanthropy has been the route some cities are going with the shrinking public dollar, esp in a stingy state like Ohio toward transit; but that unfortunately you're not going to rail expansion, not even with private dollars, unless this community changes its mindset. Please reread my post. Which community has an anti-rail mindset, specifically? As opposed to a general skepticism towards public transportation. You raise a good point... I was wrong. It can't be the whole community, because more and more citizens are riding rail (Cleveland has one of the fastest growing rail ridership); and a developer here and there (Ari Maron, for one) are actually motivated to build TOD -- hopefully Intesa will be the next TOD... ... better stated would be too many leaders in our community are either anti rail or, more commonly, just plain indifferent to it; and that's a problem. Who are these anti-rail community leaders that you speak of? Give us some names. I think a lot of people on this forum would like to know..
  22. Maybe you don't read to well, but I have, indeed, commented on the lack of funding by the state... and applauded Joe C for his activism on increasing Ohio's public transit budget. So it seems like you're the one who needs to "grow up" ... and learn how to read, as well; thanks. Zoolander, the irony of your reply is priceless. Please learn the proper use of "to" and "too" before attacking someone else's reading and writing skills. Thanks much.
  23. You're right about that. It would be served by rail if there was LRT of some sort down W. 25 into Parma... oh right, the Calabrese crew scuttled that idea in favor of more BRT studies. Your memory is worse than your attempt at constructing a creative flame.
  24. So what are you saying: you're satisfied with RTA and it's approach? Apparently so, since you'd rather spend your time attacking someone who is hard on RTA when they appear retrogressive and helpful to expanding transit options .... And for the record, until today, I've not negatively commented specifically about RTA's decision to study only BRT down W. 25. I have commented that RTA has had an anti-rail attitude, and W. 25 corridor is just the latest... So perhaps you, yourself, are an anti-rail individual who just likes to sit back and take pot shots at those of us who desire progress (which is a big reason why Ohio urban transit is the backward-looking mess it is) ... and perhaps you're too lazy to notice, I've praised RTA on many occasions (like with the new Little Italy-UC station)... when they deserve it. Either way, people like you add nothing to intelligent discussion, so ... Oh please....So when someone calls out your CONSTANT bashing your first reaction is to go off the deep end? Grow up. One positive comment doesn't make up for the hundreds and hundreds of meaningless rants you go on weekly. If you really cared about "intelligent discussions" you would be writing about the lack of funding and resources dedicated to the RTA, not Joe C's anti-rail crew.
  25. ^ I understood his point yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that.
