The Crew's Andy Iro, left, beats the Galaxy's Alan Gordon to the ball during the second half.
There was much to turn the Crew's attention from the task at hand -- or foot, as it were -- before a 1-0 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy last night.
David Beckham and company arrived Thursday, bringing with them the usual hubbub that accompanies Major League Soccer's most popular road show. It followed news early in the week that the Crew, or at least a portion of the franchise, might be sold.
Partly lost in the shuffle was the fact that a Crew victory could have clinched home-field advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs depending on the results of games involving New England and Chicago.
For the Crew, without suspended coach Sigi Schmid and captain Frankie Hejduk and playing in front of an overflow home crowd for the first time this season, there was plenty of potential for distraction.
Yet the Crew did not let up, even against MLS' worst team.
"If we can play without that little bit of edge and still win, that's a good sign," said Schmid, whose team had already clinched a playoff spot.
Fill-in captain Alejandro Moreno headed a pass from defender Danny O'Rourke past new Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders in the 43rd minute. It was all the Crew needed to beat the Galaxy (7-12-8), which failed to win for the 14th time in its past 15 games.
"Whatever is going on or not going on (off the field), we can't control it," Moreno said. "At the end of the day, we're soccer players."
The Crew (16-6-5) improved to 7-0-1 in its past eight games and increased its franchise-record point total to 53. Boosted by the return of star midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Columbus players are in lockstep as they march toward the playoffs.
Although Schelotto's hour-long effort was rather tepid -- his team struggled to maintain ball possession and connected on few dangerous passes throughout the first half -- the Crew leaned on its rock-steady back line and did not waver.
O'Rourke shifted to right back in place of Hejduk, who served a one-game suspension for a red card received last week. Rookie Andy Iro played next to Chad Marshall in the center. The back group repeatedly passed the tests provided by Galaxy standout forwards Landon Donovan (19 goals, nine assists) and Edson Buddle (13 goals).
Schelotto, Donovan's closest competitor in the league MVP race, played for the first time since Sept. 6. He had missed the previous three games because of a left hamstring injury.
Donovan had a chance to tie the score in the 45th minute with a breakaway, but his shot went wide after Crew keeper William Hesmer closed down Donovan's angle to shoot.
Sub Bryan Jordan was at the heart of a flurry of second-half scoring opportunities for Los Angeles. He had a chance at an equalizer in the 88th minute when he worked his way around Iro and let loose with a shot at the far post, but it skittered wide.
Beckham earned jeers and a yellow card for a hard challenge on Robbie Rogers in the first half, earning a suspension for a game against Colorado on Oct. 12.
"We worked hard at creating chances," Beckham said. "That's all you can ask at the end of the day."
New England tied Real Salt Lake 2-2 last night, helping the Crew toward home-field advantage in the playoffs. If Chicago fails to win against Kansas City today, the Crew will clinch the advantage.
