The fact Orlando went seven games against a depleted Boston team is telling. They were lights out in game seven from beyond the arc, but when they're not falling, they're very vulnerable.
  2. MTS, I think you make a good point. My mom is a nurse at UH, and she thought the med mart may eventually include hospital bed manufactures and a whole plethora of ordinary hospital supplies, not just the highly-technical things like stints.
  3. MTS, Sorry if I confused you. I mean some of these manufacturers may actually relocate here, as opposed to just having showrooms here. Some may actually manufacturer products in Cleveland along with showing these products at the med mart.
  4. These guys seem to be on top of their stuff. This concept makes so much sense. Not just because we will see increased traffic at the convention center, we may actually see some manufactures set up shop here.

^LOL....My parents told me that on several occasions.

jpop - How many punches can the city take until its reputation is so tarnished it can't recover? I think perception may be one of the most important factors attracting new residents. Portland doesn't have a robust job market, but a lot of young people flock there because it's considered a cool city. I think our current culture really plays into what is cool or lame. Everyday there is a new poll or article talking about cool places to live or visit. Most of these articles are written by people who live in these "cool places." It's a vicious cycle. Finally, Clevelanders should be ashamed. We are the ones that perpetuate this sh*t. Our own paper plays into this crap. I'm not going to name the city, but I went to college in a city not too far from here. In my opinion, this city has escaped ridicule because the residents defend their city, even as thousands leave the area every year. Even people who have left the region looking for jobs talk about how great this place is. Clevelanders on the other hand, take every opportunity to dump on their hometown. Sorry for the rant.

To be honest, I'm really upset about this. I have a sense of humor and I'm all for laughing about yourself, but this stuff really hurts the region. We're already behind the eight ball. Perception is everyting. If this comedian truly "loved" the city, he would have understood this video plays into every joke made about the city over the last thirty years.

It may be funny; however, I've had three friends tell me they may rethink their trip to Cleveland. Obviously, they missed the humor. This guy knew a video about Cleveland what ignite like wildfire because of the years of old Cleveland jokes. If the video was about Milwaukee would it be as funny? Maybe, but with the history of jokes, it just perpetuates all the stereotypes. Some people say we should stop being oversensitive. Well, how come we're not getting this type of humor from other cities? This has been going on for thrity-plus years. It's getting really old.

I'm glad Positively Cleveland is trying. What bothers me is the need by Clevelanders to perpetuate this idea about the city. Yes, it's funny, but it's getting old and it does more harm than good. These kids don't understand that all the Cleveland jokes came from Clevelanders. It seems like everyweek I'm defending the city. Last week, it was the Forbes article. The week before that it was the first "Hastily Made" video.

Well, the Hastily Made Tourism Video 2 hit youtube about a week ago. I know it's supposed to be funny, however, a couple of my friends from out-of-state emailed it to me and told me maybe they shouldn't visit this summer. I thought they were joking, but they were serious. My one friend said downtown looked terrible. I explained to my one friend anyone could do this same type of video in every city. C'mon Clevelanders...we need to step up and have more pride. Some of the comments on youtube were ridiculous, and a lot of them were from people who live here.

^I'm trying my best not to be overly sensitive but, I think we are all just tired of the daily commentary about how bad it is.
  12. jpop - You're right. I think this is an exciting time for the region. I think for as much as the city has gone through, we continue to hold our own. I think we are slowly diversifying our economy. I don't think people understand how painful and slow the transition from a manufacturing to service driven economy can be. Granted, we have leaders who don't get it and too much infighting. It's like Microsoft switching from making computer software to selling coffee.(probably a bad exmaple...) Also, its not like there's nothing going on. They're quite a few projects on the horizon that can transform the city.
  13. The opening tagline is ridiculous. I don't even think the Forbes article even used msa stats. I think it was purely core city numbers. My brother's co-worker in another city sent the article as a way to prove Cleveland is a terrible place to live. (I guess my brother and his co-workers have been having a debate about cities in the midwest) This is the really sad part about these lists. People believe them and base their perceptions on them. Even more disconcerting is that this co-worker had never even been to the city. My brother said he just repeated every yahoo, Forbes and CNN article he had ever read about Cleveland. Honestly, I wish the PD was just go away. I knew they would post this "fluff piece" in the business section. Did the PD post or mention the WSJ article detailing North Collinwood's emergence as a place for artist? No. This is exactly why I don't read the PD.

Also, Houston has two legit defenders in Battier and Artest. Both guys can guard Kobe on the perimeter. This is a tough match-up for the Lakers.

^Yeah, I still use it at work.
  16. I'm so disgusted I could spit. I would hate to lose this project. My mom works at UH, and all she talks about is how much potential Cleveland has, and how it can become the leading medical center in the country. She also talks about all the spin-offs the MM would create. All this seems so surreal. We have an outside company trying to set up shop, and one of our largest companies, along with our newspaper, is trying to bury the project. I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone.
  17. ^I like it. At least Polensek admitted the fix was in.
  18. This is really getting under my skin. Isn't the PD's job to report the news objectively? I'm getting tired of the PD trying to torpedo this project. Cleveland's film industry, seriously? Is it because they're in FCE's pocket or are they just trying to create controversy to sell papers? Also, sounds like city council had a productive meeting in Chicago. I wonder if they will put pressure on Frank.
  19. ^I'm sick and tired of FCE. So, Frank has no intentions of selling the center to the county? What happens to the Mall? Just thinking about that deal makes me sick.
  20. What leverage does Frank have? If this falls through, he becomes the fall guy and the city misses out on 17.5 million. There has to be a compromise here. I can't imagine Frank just sitting on this "valuable asset", especially when there are no other suitors. Either way, this has become terribly embarrassing.
  21. ^I'm glad I'm not the only one who stopped reading cool cleveland because of Roldo. I thought I was being too harsh on the old guy.
  22. I wonder how the Mayor will spin this? The city is facing possible budget shortfalls, and he is going to let an antiquated, mostly empty convention center just sit there? Explain that to your constituents, Mr. Mayor. Honestly, I just want the project done. I don't even care where it is anymore.
  23. ^Good response. I'm getting sick and tired of outsiders dumping on the city for no apparent reason.
  24. ^We'll see how long that dance last. Again, how do you go to your constituents and tell them you didn't sell the convention center while facing possible default and budget cuts? What possible leverage does he have? Frank has backed himself into a corner.
  25. I wonder if the city's looming budget issues will move along negotiations between the city and the county?
