The Official * I Hate Barkley * Thread
Well, it's been a long time since I've read then comments on cleveland.com, and it will be a long time before I read them again. After reading the comments after the Charles Barkley story, it reaffirms my theory Clevelanders are wholly responsible for the treatment of our city. The disdain some Clevelanders have about their own city is unreal. It's as if the city did something to them. Here is a example: "Like all educated people, I moved away from that dreary city...the women are ugly and it sucks" What happened to our civic pride? I don't expect Clevelanders to never leave the region, but at least I thought people had pride in where they're from. Most of the comments are totally baseless and ignorant. I have never seen so much hate for ones hometown. I just ran into a girl from Montana. She wouldn't stop talking about her hometown. I literally had to walk away from her. In my travels, I have never experienced that from a Clevelander. So, if we don't talk up our city, we should not expect others to do it for us. Honestly, we are seeing the work of the thousands of Cleveanders who made it their job to dump on the city.

The Official * I Hate Barkley * Thread
Charles obviously has an axe to grind. Honestly, Charles does not like Lebron, and this is his way of trying to insult Lebron. Who cares what the "round mound of rebound" has to say. I'm so tired of the Cleveland hate. It's so eighties if you ask me. I just ignore stupid comments from stupid people like Charles. Also, Charles Barkley is from Alabama...Lol

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
This crap has to change! We look like a bunch of bumbling fools. Somebody needs to tell FCE to shut up and sit down. To be honest, I'm at a loss of words. Do any of you think this is actually going to happen?
-
Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
This is getting to be ridiculous. The PD should be ashmed. They're nothing but a pawn in FCE's pathetic attempt to land this project. I think the PD may have done more to hurt this town than other organization in the history of Cleveland.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I'm tired of this whole thing. What the hell is going on? I'm embarrassed to be a Clevelander after reading the Crain's article. Gee Wiz.......I mean an outside company wants to invest in our city, and we look like a bunch of bumbling idiots. Really think about it. An outside company wants to put something in Cleveland that is unique, and will build on our local assets. Sounds simple? No, the powers that be have made this the most complicated process ever. What is so hard? I'm sick and tired all the crap. I have always been optimistic Cleveland could change and eventually realize its potential, but after this debacle, I'm starting to wonder. Also, screw Forest City and their stupid plan. I don't even know why MMPI is even dealing with them. You lost! Take your ball and go home. Sorry for the rant.

An Ohio culture?
I agree, so many kids in this state look to move to elsewhere. I've had friends tell me I'm foolish for staying here. After I thought about it, I realized most of the these kids left the state for college, came back home for breaks, and didn't come home for the summer. When they came home for breaks, they would sit in the house for a week or two, and then go back to school and complain how bored they were. I found most of the people who complained about Ohio had no clue what was going on in their home city. In college, I met a girl from the eastern suburbs of Cleveland who didn't know Cleveland had light rail. Here's the funny thing, every word out her mouth was how lame Ohio was, and how she was moving to New York.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
"With Ohio's economy losing steam, perhaps it's best to put on hold plans to connect the state's three largest cities by passenger rail, some state representatives said in a budget hearing last week." What? This is exactly the kind of project Ohio needs to position itself for future growth.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^Good point. They may be disappointed Tower City was not chosen; however, this project will help Tower City. Like I said in an earlier post, they should focus other development opportunities downtown.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I gave MMPI a lot a credit for sticking with this project. FCE and GCP have really tried to ruin this project from the start. I'm getting the feeling MMPI really thinks this can be very profitable for their company. Do any of you think FCE will back off, or will they continue to discredit MMPI’s selection?

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
As usual, the PD is absolutely clueless. The PD is nothing but a useless rag. The guy who wrote this article is an absolute moron. I bet you he has not been downtown in over twenty years. Also, I'm done with this whole ordeal. How come we can't get things done in this town? We have an outside company that wants to build a medical mart in our town and we are doing everything we can to screw it up. Building a new convention center should not be this hard. However, our bumbling politicians and FCE are doing everything they can to screw it up. Doesn't FCE have other projects around the country to worry about? If FCE is so worried about Tower City, they should come up with new development ideas for downtown rather than throwing their weight around on this project. Oh, I forgot FCE does not invest in markets like Cleveland.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^You are right, this is a pretty weak claim. Companies are not expected to anticipate criminal acts. However, it would be worth a try if your the injured plaintiff.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I agree, this site is better than Tower City. Wolstein raises some very interest points. Letting the East Bank of the Flats lay fallow may be more damaging than placing the convention center behind Tower City.

US Economy: News & Discussion
327, You are right; the rest of the country has abandoned the region and the Rust Belt in general, and there is some irony in our current predicament. However, it's a shame it took maybe one of the worst economic downturns in seventy years for the rest of America to wake up. I guess its human nature not to care until it impacts your life.

Glad to see a response to all the negativity. Maybe the Pittsburgh article was the last straw.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
"Pittsburgh's Power over Cleveland" - this sounds like an analysis of the Steelers domination over the Browns. Does the PD ever report the good news in the region? I can't remember the last time I saw an article pointing out the positives in the region without throwing in the usual negatives. I know we have problems, but I also know there are some good things happening in the region. I'm just tired of the "sky is falling" headlines. Almost everyday the PD prints article telling us how bad things are. Even on my optimistic days I feel a little deflated after reading the PD. To be honest, somedays I think to myself maybe the PD is right. I just want an objective paper - that's all. I'm not asking for a "feel good" paper that glosses over bad news. I know I'm not making this up. I lived in Pittsburgh, and the Post-Gazette did not have this negative. I've lived in Columbus, and the Dispatch did not have this uber-negative tone. I'm done with the PD.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
Sorry - I didn't read it. After spending several years at Pitt, and visiting family almost once a month, I've gotten a good feel for the city. I just feel the Clevelanders look at Pittsburgh with such envy, as if nothing has happened in Cleveland over the last 15 years. As for ceveland.com, those idiots will always make negative comments like "last one turn the lights out." Very rarely do you find an insightful comment on cleveland.com. I think we can be optimist about the city. Things always change. Nothing stays the same. cleveland still has great assets.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
I don't understand this idea that everything is okay in Pittsburgh. I went to Pitt and my wife's family is from Pittsburgh, yes, they have made some strides, but job growth and population loss is still a problem. I think Pittsburgh is the second oldest metro in the country. My wife got her masters from Pitt, and just about every one of her classmates left the region. Downtown feels dense, but after five there really is nothing going on. I'm not trying to knock Pittsburgh, the city has made some improvements. However, they still face the same problems of attracting young professionals and decent-paying jobs. They still have a declining metro population. When are we going to start looking at Cleveland in the same light? I'm well aware of the problems in Cleveland. However, the region has cultivated a great medical industry that has produced thousands of jobs. In a short time, Cleveland went from a non-player in the biomedical industry, to directly competing with Minneapolis for venture capital. I think Cleveland is slowly reinventing itself.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
McCleveland made an excellent point, the New York teams will be awful in 2010. Also, the Cavs will have cap room to resign Lebron and potentially another superstar. Imagine this three-headed monster: Mo Williams, Lebron and Bosh. What if the Cavs win a championship this year or next year? Do you think Lebron is going to bolt? Who knows, but the national media needs to relax. Nobody knows what Lebron is going to do. Right now the Cavs are 10-3 and look pretty good. They still have Wally's expiring contract to find a potent power forward. By the end of this season, the cavs could be the best team in the league. Quietly, Ferry has put together a nice core of talented players under the age of 25.The New York media should be worried about how the Knicks/Nets are going convince Lebron to turn down over 30 million dollars to play on talentless teams.
