  1. Net domestic outmigration is really dragging those numbers down. Surprised international migration covers 1/3 of the domestic outmigration loss. Got to get the economy going to bring down domestic outmigration. That would decrease outmigration and increase births.
  2. ^^True...some of this outflow is due to family size. Some of these westside neighborhoods were full of families with 3-4 kids...not any more.
  3. ^^Agree with some of what you are saying, but what about the development in Ohio City, Tremont, Detroit-Shoreway and University Circle? I agree we need more targeted development in a lot of Eastside neighborhoods, but to say it's only been about downtown misses a lot of recent development.
  4. ACE Report: Service sector keys Northeast Ohio job growth Employment in the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area was up by 8,017 jobs in January, recovering from a decline in December, according to an estimate from the Ahola Crain’s Employment (ACE) Report. Seasonally adjusted, the region saw employment rise to 1,179,851 from 1,171,834 a month earlier, a 0.68% increase. Most of the growth, 6,900 jobs, was in the service sector, though the goods producing sector saw a rise of 1,196 jobs. In December, the region lost 1,879 jobs. The estimates also show a 0.35% increase over the number of people working a year earlier, an increase of 4,102 jobs. Despite the occasional month-to-month wobble, employment in the region has been rising steadily, if slowly. Since January 2013, the region’s seasonally adjusted employment has grown by 30,654 jobs, a 2.67% increase. During the same time period, the unemployment rate has dropped from 7.8% to 5.1%, according to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20170224/NEWS/170229873/ace-report-service-sector-keys-northeast-ohio-job-growth
  5. ^Can't argue with that...lets hope this will spur more development. Another thing...read somewhere 15 buildings have been converted to apartments over the last five years. There aren't many more buildings left to convert. Rents should start to rise as the supply diminishes. We may see more new construction in future.
  6. It's been really quite in this thread and the Nucleus thread. I really thought 515 had a good chance of starting this winter. Is no news good news?
  7. U.S. News ranks Ohio hotels; 9 of top 20 are in Cleveland, but not No. 1 Half of Ohio's best hotels are in Northeast Ohio, according to a new ranking by U.S. News & World Report. The state's top hotel, however, is 250 miles southwest of Cleveland in downtown Cincinnati: the 21c Museum Hotel, open since 2012, with a modern-art gallery on the first two floors. The news magazine recently released its annual list of top hotels in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Twenty hotels in Ohio - including nine in Cleveland - were included in the rankings. U.S. News used several factors to assess the properties, including industry awards, expert reviews and online guest opinions http://www.cleveland.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/02/us_news_ranks_ohio_hotels_9_of.html#incart_2box_business

^Good point. Hard to make significant gains with a strong headwind (continued loss of manufacturing and transitioning economy). We've lost thousands of manufacturing jobs that are never coming back. However, we have slowly transitioned to a service/knowledge based economy. I think I read somewhere manufacturing jobs in the region are now close to the national average for the overall percentage of total jobs. If I remember correctly, manufacturing jobs in the early 80s made up 40% of the regional economy. Now, it's down to less than 15%. Again, those are off the top of my head so I could be wrong. I'm not saying it leadership can't be better, I just think we are in unique/unfortunate position of being a region that was so dependent on manufacturing. With the amount of good paying manufacturing jobs lost over the last 40 years, I'm surprised it's not much worse.
  9. Florida developer's plan for updating Cleveland landmark lands city aid Conversion of the 22-story Union Trust Building, 925 Euclid Ave., from offices to mixed-use with apartments, a hotel and updated offices, just took another step toward becoming a reality. Better known as the former Huntington Building, it currently consists of 1 million square feet of office space, and it's mostly empty. Cleveland City Council adopted legislation at its Monday, Jan. 23, meeting authorizing a tax-increment financing plan for the proposed $300 million project. The measure allows the increase in property taxes that would be triggered from improvements that an affiliate of Delray Beach, Fla.-based Hudson Holdings plans to make to restore the property to full and active use. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20170124/NEWS/170129903/florida-developers-plan-for-updating-cleveland-landmark-lands-city

Another thing, is it me or am I making this up, but 6 months ago there was so much positivity. The Cavs won, we successfully hosted the RNC, there were big projects on the horizon, now the tone is the complete opposite.

I just got back from a funeral in Detroit (I was all over the city) and there are some nice projects downtown, but the rest of the city is nowhere near booming. I'm frustrated with this project because it's silly. I'm also frustrated with leadership. We need a Mayor with more vision. There still is momentum, we need to capitalize on that. I really hope Frank moves on.
  12. ^I see it now...read it too fast.
  13. ^15 buildings (4.2 million square feet) has been converted to residential in 6 years? First time I've seen a number on all the conversions.
  14. Cleveland names new airports chief Cleveland has a new head of airport operations, and bringing international air service to Cleveland is a high priority. Aviation consultant Robert Kennedy, a former deputy general manager and interim general manager of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, was sworn in Wednesday morning, Jan. 11, as Cleveland director of port control by Mayor Frank Jackson. The director of port control leads operations at both Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Burke Lakefront Airport. For the last five-and-a-half years Kennedy was vice president of consulting services for Aviation Strategies International, a civil aviation consultancy. 17. ACE Report: Northeast Ohio posts small employment gain in November Northeast Ohio eked out a small employment gain in November, according to the latest Ahola Crain’s Employment (ACE) Report.Seasonally adjusted employment in November for the seven-county area of Cleveland and Akron measured by the report was 1,172,672, a gain of just 286 jobs from 1,172,386 in October. The change is small, but Jack Kleinhenz, the Cleveland Heights economist who created the ACE Report model noted it was unusual in this respect: The region lost 152 service jobs from October to November, but it added 438 jobs in goods-producing fields."The offset is a turnaround from recent trends where the growth in service jobs offset losses in manufacturing," Kleinhenz wrote in an analysis of the November ACE Report data. The region remains in positive jobs territory from a year ago. Kleinhenz said November employment in Northeast Ohio was up by 4,570 jobs from the like month of 2015. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20161216/NEWS/161219874/ace-report-northeast-ohio-posts-small-employment-gain-in-november

St. Louis is a another example. It's a great baseball town, but never really supported the Rams even though the Rams were really successful in the early 2000s.

State aid may help region land a new corporate headquarters and a big job expansion by a local firm Northeast Ohio may gain another corporate headquarters if Oak Brook, Ill.-based Sterigenics US LLC consummates a planned move of its executive staff to Broadview Heights that on Monday, Sept. 26, received state aid from the Ohio Tax Credit Authority. The state body also approved incentives for ExactCare Pharmacy LLC of Valley View in hopes of landing a major expansion that could add hundreds of jobs here if Ohio wins an interstate competition for the expansion. Gov. John Kasich's office announced Sterigenics received from the authority an incentive package to create 30 additional jobs at a new headquarters in Broadview and an incentive to help Ohio land the ExactCare expansion with more than 600 jobs.
