    I must be the only one who thinks Lorain looks WORSE than I expected it to. I didn't expect so many vacant storefronts. The infrastructure looks decent, though. It wouldn't take a whole lot to bring life back to some of those streets.

That Business Courier article reads a lot like the one I published 12 hours earlier: One River Plaza seeks extension for final plan Developers of the One River Plaza project are seeking a one-year extension to allow them more time to complete a final development plan. The extension is necessary because their concept plan for the site and the creation of its planned development district (PD-41) are set to expire on January 11, 2008, two years after they were approved. Developers Miller-Valentine Group and the Gregory family announced in early November that they planned to add two more floors to each tower, making them both 15 stories high. If the agreements are not extended, the zoning for the site would revert back to Downtown Development Subdistrict C, throwing the compatibility of the portion of the site north of Pete Rose Way into doubt and making the developers' vision of pedestrian connectivity much more difficult to achieve. The $143 million One River Plaza project will include 150 condominiums, two restaurants, a parking garage and a public plaza on the former site of the Montgomery Inn Banquet Center. Units within the two condo towers, which are already well into pre-sales, will range from $400,000 to several million dollars. The City Planning Commission will consider an extension to January 11, 2009 at their meeting today.     Wow. The most amazing thing is seeing a well-kept house owned by somebody who obviously has a lot of pride sitting right next door to rubble.
  16. tinkerbelle, I only asked because a lot of times people put something together and expect it to be an instant success, without much work on their part. I see it all the time with blogs. It sounds like you've done quite a lot, and I'm not sure there's anything I could add to help. I was going to suggest advertising, sponsoring, or passing handbills at high school/college sporting events and maybe taking out some ads in high school yearbooks. But these are only avenues similar to what you've been doing. I wish you luck - hang in there.

I would agree with pretty much what everyone else is saying: * Photograph in the morning if possible * Don't linger in front of any one property, especially with a camera pointed at it * Don't photograph people * Don't roll by in a car, and then come back in a few minutes trying to get a better shot * If someone threatens you or stares you down, leave (When a guy in South Cumminsville said "I'll motherfucking kill you, you white motherfucker", I got out of there quickly.) * If someone asks, be truthful about why you're there I do agree with Hayward about photographing suburbia. It makes me feel weird, and you know folks in most of those places (especially newer cookie-cutter subdivisions) are NOT used to seeing people with cameras around. I always expect to have the cops called on me.

  20. ajknee...To be fair, those renderings are only EXTREMELY preliminary things slapped together for the purposes of the meetings. Those are not the final drawings - for example, the renderings don't show an unfinished third floor that will be part of the building. moonloop...I hate the way the auditor's site handles property sales. That $19,250,000 consists of 42 properties that they purchased on November 2, which breaks down to about $458,000 apiece. All of them appear to be rental properties and vacant land in what would be considered less-desirable areas of town. I haven't been able to find out anything about who this group is.
