  1. Weekend is fully committed. But you should stop at the "Party at Gordon Square" in Detroit Shoreway. http://www.gordonsquare.org/ Aside from all the "fun" stuff like live bands, a beer garden, and free vintage cartoons at the Capitol. They have walking and housing tours of the neighborhood. They also have a free shuttle to "parade the Circle" over on the east side.
  2. Except there is no shortage of parking at Edgewater with the lone exception maybe being the 4th of July. The shoreway has on off ramps directly into the parking lot. It is not difficult going from driving on the shoreway to parking in edgewater, it is exceedingly easy to do this. As a matter of fact for almost everybody it is quicker and easier to drive to the shoreway and then park at edgewater than it is to walk or bike there...that is being partially corrected with the new tunnels and the bike path, but the ease of driving into edgewater is unaffected.
  3. Do you mean between the upper and lower sections? towards the western end? Here is the thing, Edgewater is huge and rarely (4th of July) approaches capacity. It would be very nice and super kewl, but with all our other needs and issues, I just don't see spending that kind of jack to make a place that is perfectly pleasant a 9 instead of a 7 or 8. especially when we have so many more pressing issues.
  4. One thing to remember about doing anything to the south of the Shoreway is the very active Train Tracks right at the edge of the top of the bluff. You cant really do anything that will or might undermine the bluff. And even if you can terrace it out and have picnic areas...I don't imagine too many folks having a picnic 10, 20, 30 feet from the Freight trains and a similar distance from a highway. Even if the views are amazing. The bike path terraced in is probably the best use......Everything could/would be different if the shoreway looked more like lake or Clifton, then you could develop the Flat and push closer to the road/park ...but that is not what is going to happen.
  5. That and only have it stop at say GLBC, Lola, Luxe and playhouse square. Try to avoid having it become an RTA extension. That way you might get the skerred suburbanites to use it. They wont ride the RTA to the game but they will ride a bus from McCarthy's, the Flat Iron, or GLBC. Who knows they might become more accepting of "public" transportation if they can use it in a controlled environment......hmmm if I can ride a bus from Dante to the Casino, why not hop on the red line at brookpark and not have to worry about driving/parking downtown or in Tremont.
  6. Nope Jeff We agree completely. People who ONLY want to gamble will come because it is the closest place. You need to cater IE make it easy/convenient for those who gambling is not the main or sole purpose.. I only used out of town examples but the person from Chardon coming to pick wick and Frolic or the HOB for a show or a Browns game are pretty much the same people. I would suggest Gilbert fund some of those downtown "trolly" type buses to go between Ohio City, Tremont, DS, Playhouse square and the Casino front door. Make it easy to go to a Play or GLBC or Dinner at Dante AND visit the Casino. Hell GLBC runs their shuttle bus back and forth for Tribe games....just fund them to Run every hour on their used cooking oil.
  7. I am with AJ...there are 2 (at least) types of gamblers. Those who just want the "fix" and will get in their car or on a bus and go to a race track in WV or PA, or a stand alone Casino. They don't give a flying fig for "amenities" or the fact that the only thing within 50 miles that is of any interest is the building they are standing in. Then there are people who will make a little gambling part of their Trip. People generally don't go to New Orleans to gamble (unless it is the closest casino to them), they go for other reasons AND gamble as well. People don't go to Nigara Falls CA to gamble, they go to see the falls, ride the maid of the mist AND gamble as well...if they just wanted to gamble they would stop and the Indian Casino on the NY side or go to Erie or Presque Isle what ever was closest. The point is...You need to do absolutely NOTHING to appeal to the first kind of gambler....The blue hair spending her social security check in the slots because it is the only excitement in her life. She will be in your casino if it is the closest/most convenient.......if parking is an issue, you can Run a Bus from Randal park Mall or Rolling Acres Mall to Downtown Cleveland or any where else that has a couple hundred parking places. The key is make it convenient/enticing for somebody who comes in from Detroit (they have their own) or Flies in from NYC or Boston to catch a baseball game, or anyone coming to visit the RR HOF....or the people who come here because of our food scene or the boat show, or some convention, or visiting the family back in the 216 from Cali or Carolina. People's who's main/only focus is the gambling are coming because it is a 20 minute drive instead of 2 hours. You have to do absolutely nothing to capture this market. People in Moon township PA or Farmington Hills MI will not be visiting the Cleveland Casino...UNLESS they are in CLE for something else and happen to want to gamble. So Martha from Parma who's last trip downtown was for Xmas window shopping at the Higbee's in the 60-70's will now come for the Casino and still not visit any other location downtown. BUT the guy staying at the double tree because he is here for a medical convention just might visit the RR HOF, catch a ball game, eat at Lola, visit tremont becuase he saw Lucky's on Diners Drive ins and Dives, go to the Xmas story House AND he might also visit the casino.
  8. So is it being used? how extensively? who owns it? was it an asbestos/PCB factory?
  9. I live about the same distance as that building from those very same tracks. I would have to physically measure is but is less than 100 feet. My front door to the nearest Rail is about as wide as Clifton Blvd. And all the good folks in Lakewood, Rocky River, Bay Village that have about the same distance between them and the tracks running through their back yards. Some trains you can feel the vibrations....but not all of them. I use the Amtrack running through around 5:30 am to help time getting out the door by 6 for work. And that building has been there a pretty long time without being shaken down.
  10. Here is something somewhat on topic. Does anything go on in the Westinghouse building? Does anyone know anything about it? at the end of W. 58th st. to me that place would be outstanding for some loft conversions. I walked along the train tracks from Whiskey island up to Father Caruso past it....they have a rail spur running into the building, but I haven't ever really seen any activity in that building. I know that there is industrial activity going on in that whole "complex" but also see for sale/lease signs on some of the buildings.
  11. Sweet Moses looks super kewl and tasty... Stopped in on my way to the bus to go downtown for the Gladiators game on Sat. It was too busy for my wife and I to get anything in the limited time we had. Glad to see something like that open (apparently successfully) In the DS. hey Htsguy where exactly in the Gordon Art district do you think there is space for 2,000 housing units? Perhaps if they took the Westinghouse building and all the other industrial buildings between 58th and 65th North of Breakwater...or even Herman. But some, if not most, of that is operational and they are less than 1/2 built out in battery park...
  12. What you can't do is rely on calling into central dispatch to get a cab, having the bartender call you one, or walking outside and raising your arm. What you need to do is find a reliable cab driver and get his/her cell phone number. Every cab you get into, ask the guy for his card/cell phone number. You will eventually, if not right away, find a good one. I have a guy, I tip him well. I never have a problem. St Patty's day? New Year's eve? Any event where you walk outside to 100 people trying to hail a cab...no problem. If he isn't working his brother is, or he will find somebody for me. If you are reasonable, flexible, and tip well....you wont have a problem once you have a number. I live in Detroit-Shoreway, going to downtown or tremont is somewhere in the area of 10 bux....the driver gets 15. You can make a plan when you can actually talk to the guy who will be picking you up....instead of "we will get someone there as soon as we can" and/or having somebody else jump in your cab. My typical interaction "are you working sat?" "yes" "Going to playhouse square, need picked up at 7" "Very good, just text/call me Sat to confirm" "Okay ready to be picked up" "I am in Lakewood, I can be there in 25 minutes, is that good or do you want me to see if somebody can come sooner?" "No that is good" "Okay Green van cab number is 814" nice nice....
  13. another major contributor was the complete lack of security. Almost all of the parking on the East bank was at least a block away from the bars. The lots weren't owned by the bars. Nobody did any real security outside their own doors. Armed robberies, assaults, and rapes that happened in the outlying parking lots weren't the "problem" of the bar owners. so they did nothing about it. During the peak they were minting money, had lines, cover charges, turned people away. They saw no need for the "unnecessary" expense of safety....until it was too late. That is one reason people are worried about the warehouse district going down the same path. Bar owners who don't seem to "care" about what happens outside their doors.
  14. I have heard good things about Tina's. I haven't been yet. It looks very nondescript. Almost bunker like with an 8 foot chain link fence around it.

How do you not find the hangover funny? what does he think is funny? Thoughts: not that into you...move on. Sounds like "friend" material, if he is worthy of being a friend. who shows up to a "date" high? somebody who isn't putting forth the minimal amount of effort required. My brother always says 90% of life is showing up...if he can't be bothered to "show up" on time showered w/ deodorant and clean clothes straight he has not put in the absolute bare minimum required for a second date. I couldn't be a drinking buddy with somebody who didn't find the Hangover funny. That is my .02

good for you? good for him? good for the both of you? here is a random list of recent DVD/Blue ray releases that as a man I would consider watching. "Machete" "Easy A" "Salt" "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" "Family Guy: It's a Trap!" "The Other Guys" "Inception" "The Kids Are All Right" "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" There are others such as Eat Pray Love that I might consider watching if you were my soul mate but not a good idea for an "early" date. unless you don't want another one. you can find a complete list of recent releases here http://www.moviefone.com/dvd If you are talking about ANY movie.....well that depends. Casablanca Pink Panther Cleopatra Jones Omega Man The life of Brian You probably need to know the person pretty darn well to actually pick a good first date movie. The first movie I saw with my wife was Talladega nights: The ballad of Ricky Bobby. That worked out pretty well.
  19. Rocky River high school in the 80s. Booze, weed, coke all very easy to obtain. Booze was a weekly occurance for the majority of students. 12 pack of busch was 3.99. buy one and drive around.....this was just before MADD showed up and just as they were raising the drinking age from 19 to 21. Of course everyone was 15-18 but it wasnt hard. The Ignatius kids turned us on to a beverage store on Fulton that would sell to an 8 year old. Most everybod knew somebody who had an older sibling at college. Case, BW, Bowling Green, OSU, Miami, OU, JCU is where the majority of the drugs and hard alcohol came from, beer and wine coolers were easy. heck the kids from the burbs was the reason the observation lot at the airport was shut down.. All summer long was a partay! there. All the west and southwest burbs were represented. Including Lorain and Medina counties. Some ignatius kids once in a while, but nobody from Cleveland really. You could get anything imaginable in that lot.

KJP At least you can tell her the weather is the same. She might even have 'cousins' here. You might have to move to Tremont though...

80 will have less traffic than 480 and taking 77 you will be going against the traffic flow. Your only issue could occur where 77 and 480 come together. Either way you might want to experiment with taking 176 to 480 or to 77 and then 80. I used to live in Tremont and Took either 176 or 490/77 to 480 on my way out to Beachwood. Your biggest problem will occur where 480 meets 271/422, it becomes a mess with any sort of traffic volume. I got off the highway where the backups would begin (Warrensville Rd.) would usually avoid them but not always, this was one reason I shifted my schedule. I now live on the near west side, now take the shoreway to 77 to 480. I can have flexible hours and I leave to come to work at 6 am leave to go home at 3:30 to avoid any issues. If you google map or mapquest it, the time they give you will be + or - 5 minutes on an average day......The stuff you really cant plan for is what will throw you off. Accidents, or the weather.

you might also look at Ohio city just south of Lorain...but not that far south, a couple of blocks, just south of where St. ignatius is. and/or Duck Island.... Peninsula between Ohio City and Tremont.

sent you a PM.. as far as on the way up/down. We are talking Cleveland here so the bands are fairly narrow...... But DS/Edgewater up, old brooklyn down.......but minor movements. The houses in that area of Brooklyn will be more energy efficient, in general they are slightly smaller and newer built 40's 50's 60's as opposed to the 10's 20's 30's

I live at W 70th as far north as you can go. there are a few places for sale in my hood. what kind of budget and/or house (beds baths) etc are you looking for? in that general area further away from 80th and further away from Detroit (to the north) the better. I used to live at 104th and Lake rd. the area is pretty decent.
  25. Maybe I missed it when I drove by because they were staging building materials and it is currently fenced off.. if you google map it you will see the lot and that all of the streets in BP have provisions for parking on both sides of the street. shouldn't be a problem....will be a far site better than trying to park in Tremont. and that goes for everything up around Gordon square as well
