  1. Ikea actually do put solar on the roofs of most of their stores and Walmart has done so on a few of them.
  2. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just put panels above the roads? The panels wouldn't have to be as sturdy (but some kindof frame would be) and in bad weather they'd keep a lot of the rain/snow off the road. It might be cheaper, but it wouldn't do anything for reducing the carbon footprint that results from the traditional way of making a road. Also, any frame created would suffer the same fate as any other roadside post. One good accident and you would totally disable that stretch of road. Keeping the wiring underground and constructing the solar panels to be 'plug-n-play' would minimize an accidents impact. I just think this is a really cool idea that makes me wish I had an engineering degree. The number of jobs this could create is huge! I don't see this being constructed with a smaller or even equivelant footprint than a traditional road.

No, it's surprising. It's surprising it took so long.

^No offense guys, but can we stick to the Browns?
  6. ^From that, the most important slides were at the end. Summary Evaluation • Alternative B – DMU option is not cost-effective. – HRT option provides significant mobility benefits – HRT option medium rating for cost-effectiveness without right-of-way costs. – HRT costs twice as much as the BRT options and is less cost effective. • Alternative E – Rapid+ option is not cost effective. – BRT option has fewer mobility benefits than Alternative B. – BRT option would qualify for a medium rating for cost-effectiveness. – Satisfies statutory requirement for dedicated transit lanes. – Future "transit village" development. • Alternative G – Rapid+ option is not cost effective. – BRT option has fewer mobility benefits than Alternative B. – BRT option would qualify for a medium rating for cost-effectiveness. – Does NOT currently satisfy statutory requirement for dedicated transit lanes. – Future "transit village" development. Next Steps • Ridership forecasts – Use NOACA model for more refined estimates of trips on project. • Business Case – Develop No Build and Do Minimum alternative. – Capital cost for Do Minimum alternative. – Operations and maintenance cost estimate for all alternatives. – Fiscal capacity and financial analysis. – Comparative analysis. • Select locally preferred alternative (LPA) – Cost effectiveness and other FTA evaluation criteria. – FTA New Starts templates.
  7. Does anyone know if there's anywhere near downtown where you can park a motorcycle for free (or cheap)? CSU used to let you park on the sidewalks as long as you were out of everyone's way, but apparently they don't allow that anymore.

^I view it as more an example to remind management that it is possible to win with a team set up that way and consider it a counterbalance to all the pass oriented teams that get a fantastic QB and receivers but ignore their defense.
  9. I've seen boarding on both doors for cities where you're required to carry proof of purchase (like the Healthline) but not where they just let you pay fare at the back door.

I can understand. If it hadn't been for our parents in the area my wife and I would never have moved back to Ohio. I never knew my grandparents as a kid because my mom's parents lived in Ireland and my dad's parents were back and forth between West Virginia and Arizona. My wife and I wanted to avoid that situation with our kids. I know what you're saying about too close too though. My brother lives in a duplex with my mother and my brother in law is building a house next door to his parents. I need a little more space than that, but would prefer to be closer than the hour it takes to get to either my mom's or my in-laws.
  11. ^I took that DMU and Rapid+ just plain aren't going to happen on this route, but HRT or BRT are still possible.
  12. ^Why would you want to dead end it and make it almost impossible to ever extend it again? Not that I think the Red Line itself should be extended further (you'd want commuter rail if you took it any further) but I hate terminals like that. If the airport hadn't been designed as a terminal, it'd be a lot cheaper to extend to the IX center.
  13. This study is purely about connecting UC to East Cleveland, Collinwood and Euclid. Some other study would have to go into that. The Airport to Berea to Strongsville extension was studied in the 90s and shot down (mostly) by residents. Routes 251 and 451 were the compromise. I've been a vocal proponent of a similar compromise, but FTA rules have changed so that a park & ride style bus apparently doesn't score as high as it used to. Isn't the Lakewood - Rocky river being addressed by Cleveland-Lakewood: "Enhance Clifton" transit project ? They're studying this corridor specifically because the current bus service in the corridor is pretty terrible (too many slow meandering routes with too low frequency, connections that aren't timed, etc).
  14. Believe me I'm drooling over the possibilities.
  15. I don't even know what to say to this. Someone broke into President Garfield’s tomb and stole his commemorative spoons

So to follow up, I changed jobs in 2012 to UC and found that my commute sucked. I rode the bike or motorcycle as much as I could but the weather got in the way (especially this past winter.) So I decided I needed to do something about it and had three options, find another job, get the transit fixed, or buy a car. I really didn't want to buy a car as it would kill my budget so that was my last resort. I've been going to public meetings and offering my opinions on the HL extension to Euclid, but even in the best case scenario that will take years to get fixed. So I also started looking for a job back downtown, and thankfully I won't need to worry about my commute issues in a few weeks. :-) I really like my current job and would gladly have stayed at it if I could have found a way to get home from it in crappy weather, but I guess it wasn't to be.

I live for this. I took the day off. I got my windows open with a strong breeze blowing through my fifth-floor condo -- that's the extent of my enjoying this weather. My phone is on one twitter account, my desktop computer on another, with about four more windows open to different sites to track news. I've got the radio on The Fan. My TV in the office is muted, but on ESPN and my TV in the living room is on the NFL network. I'm recording both channels starting at 7 p.m. Yep, I'm into it. ;) I can understand enjoying the speculation (I treat election days like that, though with the addition of a bit of alcohol), but as I don't follow college football closely enough to know who half the guys are that everyone's talking about, the draft speculation has always annoyed me. It seemed to go on forever this year. Now that round one is done, I'm reasonably happy. I didn't really want Manziel, he's polarizing, but if he can bring some wins I'll certainly get over it. The fact that we used the 26th pick and not the 4th to pick him up though makes it OK to me though.

All I have to add to the conversation is that I'm glad it's perfect outside. I'll spend my afternoon on the motorcycle and evening in the hammock and read about who they actually picked in the morning. No need to listen to more speculation.

^Agreed on Skrine. He's not as bad as his reputation.

Sure, and one more thought. If the stuff at the bike shops is out of your price range, try sporting goods stores. The quality probably won't be any higher than the box stores, but the assembly will be done better and the sales people will probably be a bit more knowledgable. Dick's seems to have a lot of bikes on sale right now.

If you're just going to do short trips around your neighborhood or to get some exercise, a big box bike might work. It won't last you years and years, it won't be particularly light, and if it does break after whatever period Wal-mart lets you return it, it'll be garbage. That said, it doesn't sound like you're going to be doing serious commuting or long distance rides so it might work for you. That said, if you start riding a lot and really get into it, when it does break you can replace it with something nicer. The bike you're looking at in particular is labeled as a "mountain bike". It's got front suspension and heavy tubes to make it look like it's sturdy enough to go off road, but all that really does is add weight. If you're getting something like it, go to a store and see what you're able to pick up. My wife's bike is lighter than that and she complained that it was too hard to put up on the hooks in our garage.

I assumed it would pass, but my hope is that the opposition to the sin tax got enough attention at the city and county that they'll feel pressured to get better deals as the current lease agreements come up for renewals.
