I think the biggest reason I still have Facebook is to keep up with relatives whose couches I'd like to someday sleep on. It seems like no one on my mom's side of the family has decided to live within a couple hundred miles of their parents, so combined with being a large family, there's a pretty good network of uncles, aunts and cousins throughout the world that I can stay with while traveling to avoid paying for hotels.

Just an FYI, the Arabica in your first shot is an old hardware store and has a nice collection of vintage shots of downtown on the walls. (Also their canoli is probably the best in the area outside of little Italy.)
  3. ^Wait, what? Is this just a rumor or did you hear this from a good source? I'll admit I haven't been paying attention that closely to the project but that doesn't sound right.
  4. Here, let me google that for you... http://www.cleveland.com/cityhall/index.ssf/2009/08/cleveland_city_council_members.html
  5. ^I think we'd all love to see a new tower either on Jacob's public square lot or one of the other surface lots. I'm sure one or more will be proposed, but I still think the county will end up in the Huntington building in the end. People keep expressing this adoration of Breuer tower and I just don't get it. I'd hate to lose a building of that size, but IMO it's uglier than the pile of dog crap sitting on my driveway that my neighbor keeps forgetting to come pick up even though we both saw his dog "put" it there. What were we talking about?

I expressed my displeasure to NBC, and am pretty sure my email will be deleted without even being read because of my colorful language, but it made me feel a little better to tell someone off.
  7. Construction finally started last week on University Towers on East Blvd. I still think they could probably rent them out at market rate rather than just senior/disabled apartments, but I don't know what limitations they have on the interior.
  8. I suppose it depends on your definition of "blighted", but I'd go with "had potential but has fallen beyond mere disrepair" which the old park wasn't quite at, but was on its way toward.

^^Just think, a few years after the streetcar gets built the posting in that thread will slow down, but on this board we'll never stop going off topic.
  10. ^I agree with you, but you do have to admit though that part of the reason for all those people is that they're tourists. The further you wander from the touristy parts of the old city, the less people you see.

It's the default "person" from Sketchup. It/she's in every Sketchup model if the user goes with the default template. Whoever made the model of the building just didn't delete it/her.

It's what my parents named me.
  13. How could the Breuer Tower be considered the least desirable? Asbestos free, 29-story tower by mid century master, attached jewel box banking hall, parking, at the crossroads of an area in the city with an apartment vacancy rate of 2%. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me... No parking, needs a total facelift on the outside, windows, etc. Interior has a floor plan that is terrible for both office or residential... I wouldn't be surprised if someone bought it to try & take it down. Big picture, no matter what the County gets for these properties, it's a win. They are paying millions to maintain them, even from the most basic standpoint, and getting nothing in return. If I remember the layout right, I wouldn't call it terrible for residential. Less than ideal sure, but not terrible. The interior would need serious work to convert it, but considering they ripped out the asbestos, it's already gutted.

I'm so happy I missed most of that season (was out of the country most of it) I like the 1946 white Jersey with the orange shadow, but otherwise I really like the uniforms the way they are.

I think that there's more of a point when it's a team than an individual medal.
  16. Technically the 90F gets within 100ft of the county line at Broadway and Richmond. Not that it's helpful if you're trying to transfer to Metro, but still.

I was actually hoping they'd lose a game in the early rounds so that they'd take their competition seriously and be a little less cocky; this should do the trick.

^I was under that impression too, but I don't really remember the details of the deal when the stadium was built.
  19. I'm bumping this thread for a couple reasons. First, Laketran conducts a ridership survey every couple of years to try to guage interest and explore whether they have any gaps in their coverage and I noticed (I occasionally ride Laketran when the weather is terrible) they specifically asked "if a route was offered to University Circle, would you be interested?". Which to me at least indicates Laketran is noticing a portion of their potential riders are driving to UC. Perhaps, as was suggested last year in this thread, Laketran and RTA could try to work together in some way to move people. The other reason I thought the thread should be bumped is it's now been 10 months since RTA received $1M in grant money toward this. Is it fair to start asking what's the progress? Have they chosen who will conduct the analysis? Do they have a rough time frame on when we might hear something? Has anyone caught any rumors about what possibilities are being compared? Where's the oracle of Brooks Brothers when you need them? (In other words, I'm impatient and curious)

I think it depends on the context. If it's in a thread about Akron or Canton (or something going on there), calling the airport CAK is appropriate; most everyone commenting in that thread understands the meaning or can figure it out from context. However if we're in a more general thread, I'll agree that it's annoying. For the record, I just googled what CVG and CMH were as I always get them mixed up.
  21. I'm not a big fan of the look of those apartments, but it's still great news that they'll be built.

Man, wasn't that annoying as a kid? Going over the slightest ridge in a car and having your stomach try to shoot through the roof? My grandparents lived out in Monroe County and we'd go shopping in Wheeling sometimes. During the car ride back I'd roll up into a ball because I would get really queasy. And I'd always get a headache from the elevation changes. Meanwhile, as adults we seek out these roads in our cars and on our motorcycles because they're fun. I had a particularly week stomach as a kid and couldn't handle long car rides without getting sick. Even as a teenager I couldn't ride most amusement park rides. I'm very fortunate that my kids aren't as bad as I was though.

I spent more time getting car sick going around and over the hills in that part of West Virginia as a kid than I care to remember. My grandfather grew up just a few miles north of there and we regularly went down to visit relatives as a kid. Somewhere around there is an abandoned farmhouse where my great grandparents lived, but its not in as good a shape as this.

hmph. He was one of the few Republicans that I didn't mind having as a representative of me. The sad part is that since the primaries are long over we won't get a real election to replace him. The Democratic candidate running for the seat has run the last few elections without any support from the party or real chance at winning and the Republicans are going to have to just pick some random person to run in his place.
