Cleveland: Restoring Brick Streets/ Removing Asphalt Overlay
In Ohio it is legal to ride on the sidewalk. It's somewhat unsafe as drivers don't look for you there, but it is legal. See ORC 4511.711. However, the city has outlawed bikes on sidewalks "within a business district". So if you're talking about exposing bricks on a side street or in a residential neighborhood, there wouldn't be a legal problem if cyclists decided to use the sidewalk instead. (I looked this up last summer after I got yelled at by a cop for riding on the sidewalk to get around a traffic backup.)

Governor John Kasich
Agree. Just as I want congress to let Obama govern, Kasich should be allowed to govern here. Otherwise our system has no validity. Agreed, let's let him make his mistakes so that even if we disagree with them, we can use them to judge him by when it's reelection time.

A coworker had the same thing happen. Apparently by the time she got someone to pick her up and give her a ride home she already had messages from chiropractors. I'm curious whether that's a violation of the "do not call" lists.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Well, but I believe the Nashville one includes all the ballroom and exhtition space in their math where ours doesnt. Yeah, it's something like that. The "11x square footage" is pure marketing.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
No, it won't be 11x bigger, but the folks at MedCityNews apparently aren't checking the math of the folks in Nashville. And based on the pictures on their website, the Nashville facility (if built) will be 5 or 6 stories.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Jerry, the Euclid Park-n-Ride has had a slight smell of gas for several days and it seems to be getting worse. I (and several other riders) have reported this to different drivers and been told that it's been reported to maintenance. Is there any way that whoever has checked this out can post a sign somewhere that either parts are on order, or it's not really a gas leak, or everyone should wait outside if they don't want to die a fiery death, or something? At the moment the lack of communication makes it look like RTA can't be bothered to go check out a potentially dangerous situation which probably isn't the image RTA wants to project.

Everytime I cross the state line back into Ohio there's a pretty significant difference. KY, WV, and PA keep their roads in better shape than Ohio from my perspective.

Cleveland: Downtown: A.J. Celebrezze Federal Building Renovation
From what I understand its going to enveloped in glass, not concrete and according to a PD article a few months back, its going to save the building 500,000.00 a year in heating/cooling costs 500K a year savings on a 120 million investment. I don't know guys, the math....it doesn't seem cost efficient. p.s. is there no safety component to this? It's a combination of energy saving retrofit and security update. The glass is supposed to be impact resistant and laminated so that in the case of an explosion there won't be shards flying everywhere. At the same time by providing an extra layer it will reduce heating and cooling costs. (Though of course not enough to offset the cost of the renovation.) The idea is that by significantly renovating the exterior and doing a few minor renovations to the interior they in effect get a newish building without ever having to vacate any portions of it. Also the current windows are being replaced as well, (at night and on weekends) but they can't just replace them with the high efficiency impact resistant glass without making some fairly significant reconstruction, which would actually cost more because it would have required closing each floor of the building as it's windows were replaced, (which means moving costs, and having to rent space in another building) plus the building as it stands is just one massive pile of asbestos and they're trying to minimize how much of that they have to deal with during this project. Side note, the interior of the 27th floor is being gutted and remodeled over the last year and a half as part of a separate contract. It hadn't been updated at all since the 60s when it was first built so everyone knew going in that there would be asbestos but they didn't realize to what extent. The remodel ended up costing about $1.7 million (slightly over budget) mostly due to the asbestos removal.

Tourists usually do go to drug and convenience stores though. Especially since you can't bring liquids (soaps, shampoos, lotions) on planes anymore.

^The Navy Finance Center hasn't existed since '91 when it was merged into DFAS (Defense Finance and Accounting Service) and is mostly in the Federal Building downtown. The Bratenahl site is used by DFAS for housing servers and file storage. It's also used by DCMA (Defense Contract Management Agency) as offices.

Your Daily Commute
Yeah, I spent a while looking at my options over the weekend and it does look like I've got a few after all. Trying to get directions from Google Maps wasn't very helpful though since it assumes that I'll walk a little slower than my grandmother to the bus stop and so it doesn't want to give me directions to a stop that's further than a quarter mile.

Manry Park had the barracks for the troops that manned the missiles, but didn't actually have any missiles at that location. The location in Eastlake was at what is now the JFK senior center on 336th St. (About a mile away.) I know there was one in Painesville (but I don't remember where), one in Bratenahl (just up the hill from Dike 14), one at Burke, and that one in Eastlake. Was there one out near Lordstown too? (I think I heard that at some point.)

Your Daily Commute
I'm moving to a new job near University Circle in a few weeks and I'm kindof frustrated that I'll have to drive to work. There's just no reasonable option to get from Lakeshore Blvd down to UC on RTA. I'll take the bike when the weather is good, and on the days when I have no other option I can take the 39F all the way to downtown and then take the Healthline back across town, but considering how long that'll take, I think I'll be driving a lot.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
So would a few other folks I've spoken to in the last few days. They wondered why these east-side transit projects (Blue Line extension, Red Line/HealthLine extension etc) keep getting proposed. The same people (east-siders, no less!) suggested extending a Red Line branch to Lakewood or a BRT to Parma. HEY, don't criticize a Redline/Healthline extension on the east side! :whip: I need that one to happen so I don't have to go through downtown to get from my house on Lakeshore to work at UC. But I'll agree that it's pathetic no one is looking at Lakewood.
