Northeast Ohio / Cleveland: General Transit Thread
How about a map I drew the last time we discussed this? http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=203308980444636244129.00048297013150e5b575b&msa=0&ll=41.57205,-81.543274&spn=0.044435,0.133896

Akron Metro RTA-Commuter Rail
I've wondered a couple times in the past whether it would make sense for the CVSR to put a stop near Goodyear's HQ (Either old or new since they go near both.) I don't know how if it would attract a significant ridership, but I'm glad someone is exploring the concept. I would wonder how receptive a tire company would be to rail transit, but I guess we'll see.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
They nailed it that both options suck, and compromise is badly needed. Unfortunately, that should have happened before it was passed. I opposed SB5, and am undecided on Issue 2. Considering my political leanings, this means it's almost certain to fail. If I do vote yes, it will be in large part to make the vote closer and compromise more likely. Sadly I don't think a close vote on this will make compromise any more likely.

Cleveland: Downtown: A.J. Celebrezze Federal Building Renovation
Actually that was priced by GSA and was going to be slightly more expensive. Admittedly though, a part of the reason for that was the cost of real estate and the estimate was done several years ago, before the real estate market downturn. In the years since, the building has undergone a lot of interior renovations. (Fire alarms, restrooms, lighting, asbestos removal from select areas, etc.) When you combine the cost of the interior renovations, the plaza around the building, and this exterior project with the reduced cost of real estate, it might not save the government much to do all the renovating, but as slow as GSA typically works, it's not worth changing strategy now. (In other words, by the time the contracts on the building could be cancelled and new real estate purchased, the real estate market would probably have improved to the point of cancelling out any savings.) On top of that, after seeing the setbacks that are becoming typical of Defense Department buildings, I wouldn't want to see one built in Cleveland.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
I'm of the opinion that the "fresh-out-of-college nephew of a school board member" is going to get a job either way. There's not really a way to completely prevent that. With that being my assumption, and all else being equal, I'd rather we lose a teacher that did a good job their first couple years, did a mediocre job the next few, and has been doing a lousy job for the last few years than some new teacher that has been doing a good job the last couple years. I think seniority should still be A factor in HR decisions, but I think performance should take precedence.

^ I thought the purple was bright and cheery. I'm not sure I'd want it across the street from my house, but I didn't think it was that bad.

Cleveland: Transit Ideas for the Future
Yes, there's the circlelink, but it's not frequent enough to be useful unless you pay close attention to the schedule. If it were something like the downtown trolleys that run every 10 minutes it would be more useful. I'd love to see a tram around the circle too, it does deserve one, but I'd settle for a trolley bus. Either way I think we need an improvement.

Cleveland: Transit Ideas for the Future
^A few months ago when RTA talked about adding another Trolley route downtown my first thought was that it would make more sense to pursue a loop around the University Circle area. A tram seems a little excessive in cost, where as another trolley loop wouldn't be nearly as much.

I really prefer them with the shiny stainless steel look. (Though a few I've been on could do with a nice wash down.)

Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
There's another turbine going up in Euclid by the 90/2 split, but I couldn't tell which business it was at. Edit: I really should have googled first. William Sopko and Sons adding wind turbines at their Euclid operation By Caitlin Fertal [email protected] The city of Euclid will take another stride toward efficiency with the addition of new wind turbines on Lakeland Boulevard. The first of two turbines has started construction at William Sopko and Sons Company, a manufacturer of precision grinding wheel adapters and spindle accessories. http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2011/09/30/news/doc4e860aa45741c329787519.txt

I believe so, but I'm not sure how long it is. I doubt that its goes very far west of W. 25th Street. The ramp was between W 28th and W29th. http://www.historicaerials.com/aerials.php?scale=3&lon=-81.71026969267606&lat=41.490270124728724&year=1952

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
I don't have a problem with asking public employees to take a pay/benefits cut. I have problem with asking them to take a cut in their ability to negotiate. Most of the cities/counties in Ohio were already negotiating with their employees and getting them to accept the consequences of the fiscal situation that we find ourselves. Cutting their ability to negotiate doesn't directly help our fiscal situation so it seems like an unneeded hinderence put in place specifically to hobble the unions. Had that portion of the bill been left out, I would guess the uproar would probably still be pretty loud, but a lot of moderates on the issue like me wouldn't be so opposed to SB5.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I'm still recovering from a pretty nasty flu, I hadn't slept well the past week (because of the flu), I'm fat and out of shape, it was 40 degrees and pouring rain with a pretty good breeze blowing, and yet going outside to jog a couple miles seemed more desirable than watching the end of the game. Thank you browns for motivating me to get off my butt and exercise.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Saw the shelter yesterday at Mayfield/Coventry and was surprised to see it, so I took a picture of it. I didn't realize it was THAT new!! That one has actually been up for at least a month. I saw it in the middle of August, but didn't have a camera on me. Kindof cool.

Personally, I'd much rather see the red line than the healthline extended, but that's a different subject for a different thread. I don't think it would make sense to push the Healthline out that direction as busses stop so much more often than trains.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Waste is relative. I think most of the residents of Bratenahl are happy to pay a couple extra bucks to have a good police force to protect them from the people of Cleveland. The whole town is right next to Glenville and Collinwood, so the cost of having extra police to keep them safe, and better services to keep the city clean and pretty probably seems like a good investment. I would guess that the thinking is that if they merged with Cleveland, they'd start to look like Glenville but with bigger houses, therefore making them a big target for crime.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Kindof a pathetic event. It looked like RTA employees outnumbered everyone else 2 to 1. I didn't see any press at all. Then when the band across the street started playing I couldn't hear anything so I just went back to work. Sad since it's such a nice day out there.

You consider Bratenahl one of the weaker neighbors?

Governor John Kasich
If they moved a mile, it's not really "new businesses coming to the area" is it? Either way, I'll give him credit for this even if it's not as big of an accomplishment as one might have hoped.
