Cleveland Waterfront Line Extension / Downtown Loop
Isn't that 6/7 years old? I honestly would like to believe that is no longer relevant No, it isn't really relevant, but it is the plan that RTA was referring to in the Transit 2025 plan that KJP posted. In other words, RTA hasn't said anything about extending the Waterfront line in a few years, it's not really a priority to them.

^and for the lakefront plan (if anyone is interested) with the Waterfront Line running next to the tracks between St. Clair and the Shoreway. (In my opinion a somewhat stupid place to put it.) http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/lakefront/cpc.html http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/lakefront/iactive/poster/waterfront_poster.pdf

Urban Wal-Marts considered in New York and DC, Ohio next?
I'm an occasional Wal-Mart shopper, but only because they're the only place within a few miles of my neighborhood that's open at 5am when I need something that Walgreens or CVS doesn't have. So if they built a Walmart somewhere downtown, I'd probably never go in, as anytime I'm in downtown, it's late enough in the morning that other stores are open.

The Dating Thread
Yes. Why couldn't they? Why indeed. A married man, and his wife, can be friends with a single woman, no problem. If he wants to be friends, and his wife is out of that loop, he wants to hit it. Sorry, that's just how guys are hard wired. Anyone telling you different is lying. Totally agree. A married man that has single female friends OUTSIDE OF WORK that his wife doesn't really know or hasn't met is looking for some action. Close personal friendships between men and women almost always lead to some sort of sexual tension. It's the way humans are built... It's OK for married people to be friends with people of the other sex at work, church, school, etc. It's when you start doing things together (going out to eat, grabbing a drink, etc.) that things start to cross the line of inappropriateness. Even if nothing ever happens, it gives the spouse a reason to be suspicious, gives other people reason to start gossiping, might give one of the two of you the wrong idea and eventually someone is going to get their feelings hurt somehow.

Pet Peeves!
I do understand what you mean about draftiness on concrete. Our foyer is terrazzo but that floor is cold as hell. It's great for rollerblading, but not walking barefoot in winter. You guys need to find a balance between the hard and soft flooring. Here's an example of the ideal condition, to help you out: It looks like a hospital lobby, not a home.

Wall to wall carpeting. I'll explain. When my wife and I bought our house the previous owners had installed wall to wall white carpeting in the living room and hallway. Seriously, white in a high traffic area? Are they on crack? Our first thought was WTF, but we liked the house and bought it anyway. After a little bit of arguing we (meaning the wife) decided we were going to leave it for a couple years as if the floor underneath looked like crap, we didn't have the money to get it refinished. Tuesday I took the day off and finally ripped it out, expecting the worst and assuming they were trying to cover up something. We had decided to get the floors refinished as a Christmas gift to ourselves. That and we just couldn't stand the carpet anymore. White carpet and toddlers don't mix well. Some moron covered this floor with ugly ass carpet. No refinishing, or sanding, just pulled the carpet up and found it looking like this under the padding. WTF?

Redesigning Ohio
Business Group Presents Budget Proposals http://www.onntv.com/live/content/onnnews/stories/2010/12/20/story_chamber_of_commerce.html?sid=102 ... They also put potential tax increases on the table which is something Kasich has not been receptive to, reported ONN's Jim Heath. The group estimates that their savings only total $1.4 billion dollars, just an eighth of the projected deficit. ...

Cleveland Waterfront Line Extension / Downtown Loop
I would be in favor of a loop only if it makes more sense than doing nothing. If we build a streetcar loop and it spends so much time sitting at lights that it's no faster than the "trolleys", I don't see a point in wasting millions on it. There would have to be a committment by the city to actually give it priority at lights, rather than what they've done to the Healthline. Without priority at lights, a loop would be a waste of time. Who's going to take a train around downtown when you can walk just as fast (assuming you're willing to jay walk now and then)?

Is the right of way beyond E 185th even wide enough for the Red line to be extended all the way to Euclid? Well if we're just dreaming, I would extend the WFL east as a streetcar on the South Marginal, build a bridge over the water intake at the power plant, squeeze between Gordon park and I-90, then squeeze between the RR tracks and the Shoreway for a couple miles, cross 90 near E 140th and then take Waterloo Rd to E 185 That way you're not sharing a ROW for much of the route (and a lightly used ROW for another good chunk of it) plus it wouldn't stop much so it could make a reasonable speed and connect Collinwood and the west side of Euclid to downtown. Plus it would mean the 39 and 39F could be cut back and just take riders to the WFL. Here's a map I threw together.

I'd love to see the WFL go through Collinwood, but how do you get there? If you run on St Clair to 152nd then up to collinwood, it's going to take an hour to get there.

Cleveland Waterfront Line Extension / Downtown Loop
No dear I completely understand. A light rail route from downtown to Painesville would be idiotic and painful. That is clear a route for commuter rail. A few stops in Lake County; Painesville, Mentor, Wickliffe, Willoughby and then Euclid (to tie into the highway and give a park and ride option), then maybe one stop before downtown, such as MLK/Gordon Park. That is a route that would lure folks from outer counties. It would make a lot more sense in my opinion for that commuter line to take the tracks parallel to the red line and go through University circle and then connect onto the other end of the West Shore Commuter Line at Tower City. But that's a topic for another thread. I'd rather see the WFL run out on St Clair to Shaw ave in Glenville and then take Shaw to Euclid Ave and then end up at the Stokes/Windermere station.

Um, no. I think you're confusing Commuter Rail with Light Rail.

Adjusted that for you. People move in both directions when they realize their parents weren't all knowing and they learn how to come to their own conclusions.

A little, I'd feel a lot better if they'd trade Delhomme for a receiver or draft pick so that I don't have to worry that he's our backup. Might as well get something out of him.

The Future of Aviation Security
I agree. I thought they were trying to stop weapons of mass destruction, not release them by asking certain people to take their shoes off! While my explosives experience is limited to cherry bombs, bottle rockets and firecrackers as a kid and trying not to wet myself seeing IEDs and RPGs in Iraq, I would guess that most bombs small enough to fit inside shoes would be insufficient to do significant structural damage to an airliner. The same goes for underwear bombs. So we're making every passenger take off their shoes to prove they don't have have a weapon that might at most kill a handful of passengers and scare the crap out of the rest. It's much more likely they'll do what the underwear bomber did and just burn themselves before getting snot knocked out of them by their fellow passengers. While it would be nice to prevent anything like that from ever happening, is it really worth the time, effort, and money that TSA is spending and the inconvenience to passengers? I don't know. I'm sure there are some really advanced high powered explosives that could be packed into a shoe, but considering the knowledge and experience it takes to manufacture that type of explosives I would think that should be low on the list of things to search for. Just check the shoes of those coming through that are selected for extra screening or anyone with really bulky shoes/boots. If you see a guy that's 5'2" wearing size 21 shoes, then you might want to check him out, otherwise it seems like a waste to me.

Governor John Kasich
^Agreed Personally I think it had more to do with a poorly run campaign by Strickland, but maybe that's just me.

Admit Your Cultural Blasphemy!
Say what you want about beards, but they keep the wind off the face this time of year. I didn't even notice that until you said something about it. Yep, that's a tramp stamp alright. Lol Really? It was my first thought when the last time he changed it. Nope, she's hot.

Is Cleveland Liberal?
Eh, I'd say Cleveland has a lot of democrats, but doesn't really seem that liberal.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
It's been brought up before, but Kasich doesn't care. They have handicapped accessible buses, but you have to tell them ahead of time. http://www.greyhound.com/en/ticketsandtravel/disabledtravelers.aspx

I was really disappointed in the offensive play calling today, way too timid. I don't trust Delhomme, but if you're going to put him in as a QB, at least let him throw forward once in a while.

Cleveland Waterfront Line Extension / Downtown Loop
Because if the streetcar shares a right of way with traffic it won't be any faster than the "trolleys". So why not just use the "trolleys" since they'd be a lot cheaper? Other than Perk Park and the Reserve Square, every one of the sites you marked on your loop is on either the B or E loop already. I'm no fan of the "trolleys", and would prefer something railed, but you're going to have to give me a more compelling reason to like your streetcar route than that it doesn't use tires. Also, a streetcar would have to have some way of getting off the street and onto tracks to get to a maintenance facility, which basically requires that your streetcar get connected to either Tower City, or the WFL. By the time you add that, you're basically making a downtown tracked loop, which is essentially what the WFL is (or is supposed to be). So why not just finish the WFL instead? A Waterfront loop that has it's own right of way, or primarily uses low traffic roads (like E 17th as KJP suggested in some thread around here) wouldn't get stuck in traffic and could move you around downtown in a more efficient manner. Also it would allow you stay in your seat if you're coming from the Shaker lines. Now personally I think the Waterfront line makes more sense being extended to the east than as a loop, but if you want to make a railed loop around downtown, I don't see how you can beat the WFL.

Poll: How much sleep do you get a night?
When I was in the Army I regularly pulled 24 hour shifts and then didn't need to make up for it the next day. During the invasion of Iraq I was up over 72 hours straight. Now just a few years later I feel like crap the next day if I stay up past 11. Weird.

Poll: How much sleep do you get a night?
Go to bed between 10 and 11, up between 5 and 6. About once a week one of the kids will get up in the night, and I'm a lighter sleeper than the wife, so it's usually my job to calm them down and put them back in bed.
