I agree that a line has to be drawn, but my reading of the 2nd Amendment says that the federal government doesn't have the right to draw that line, it is up to the states to do that.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying.

Stupid Questions. And before anyone tries to say "there is no such thing as a stupid question...", believe me, there is such a thing. If someone has already explained something, but you didn't bother to pay attention and then ask about it a few minutes (or a few posts later when it happens on UO) it is a stupid question and I feel I should have the right to mock you for it.

  5. So then, the Healthline isn't BRT, just a nice bus, because the few times I've ridden there's been little to no interaction with the lights.

I think this post proves you're getting old. (Sorry, felt the need to inject some smartassedness into the conversation.)

http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2010/01/15/news/nh1948876.txt Ferry study docked by Bayham By Jacob Lammers [email protected] In a decision that could have a far-reaching impact, the second half of a study concerning an international ferry between Canada and Fairport Harbor will not proceed.
  8. That's not exactly what he said. Actually I've read his letter a few times and as far as I can tell his point is, People are mad about RTA cutting routes, I'm trying to get RTA some money, RTA has no money, but needs to bring back the circulator anyway, RTA should not have used capital funds because they need operating funds.

I'm not sure that I exactly fit any of the categories for the poll. I guess it depends on your definition of suburb, exurb and small town. The house my parents lived in when I was a kid had a hay field across the street, and a corn field behind it and we regularly caught the neighbors chickens when they got loose into our yard. My parents weren't farmers, but we did raise the vast majority of our own food on those couple acres. So I guess that could mean I'm from the sticks, but we were a short distance from the edge of a small town. That small town has turned into a suburb over the years since as most of the manufacturing jobs left, the roads got widened so that traffic could get through and sprawl has taken over the few farms that were still around when I was a kid. I suppose even when I was a kid, most of the farms had sold off little plots for individual homes around the edges, though because it had taken place peicemeal, all the houses were unique. My parents house had been built in the late 30s, while one neighbor's house had been built in the teens or 20s, and the other had gone up in the late 70s. There was a 200 year old farm house about 5 houses up the street, and originally the owners of that property had owned the whole neighborhood. I suppose that technically counts as sprawl, though a very different experience than growing up in a subdivision. I've lived in a little post-war suburb for the last couple years. An 1/8th of an acre is more than enough grass for me to cut. I'd kindof prefer to live in the city, but my wife grew up in the city and would rather live in the sticks now, so the suburbs are a compromise.

http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2010/01/12/news/nh1933414.txt Ferry study released By Betsy Scott [email protected] The results are in on an international ferry service feasibility study and they are getting mixed reviews. Bayham, Ontario, officials released the report to the public this week on the municipal Web site, and Bayham Council is expected to discuss it at a meeting Thursday. The council may decide whether to proceed with the impact portion of the study. Complete Study is at http://www.bayham.on.ca/files/{7464515A-5195-4105-BFE9-37FDB53D3733}2010%2001%2008%20Bayham%20Phase%20I%20Final%20Report.pdf

  12. What "new schedule" would this be? Nothing's been published, or even decided, yet. Please don't make judgments based on supposition until the facts are available. It doesn't matter what the schedule is. Let's assume no cuts besides those proposed, no headway changes, no increased volumes or crowding and no resulting delays. Pretend that other than ending the 32 at U/C everything is exactly as it was before. I think JetDog's point was that ending the 32 at U/C isn't final. If there is a large enough outcry for it to continue, or to be ended at Euclid, that is still possible. Also, if our politicians can find some extra funding lying around again, many of these cuts can be avoided. I'm guessing that unlike last year, NOACA's accounts have already been searched for extra pennies lying around unspent, but there is still the possibility that some funds could be found, or that other routes could be cut instead of those proposed, or that fares could be raised instead of the cuts. In other words, if this is an important issue to you, do something about it (I.E. write to people that can find some funds for RTA) and in the mean time, refer to the cuts to the 32 as proposed.
  13. If I don't care for either team, I try to root for the team from the city with the more blue collar reputation in my mind (Buffalo, Detroit, Pittsburgh) and will always root against a team that claims to be "America's Team" (Braves, Yankees, Cowboys). I always root against Notre Dame as I'm an Irish Protestant. (There is a logic here, but I don't feel like explaining it) Otherwise if I know that one team is the underdog I'll cheer for them. Barring any of the above, I just pick the team that doesn't score first and cheer for them. In individual sports, unless I've heard of one of them, or only one is from the US, I try to cheer for the guy with the beard, or the most attractive female.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with hearing people laugh at an intended amusing spot in a movie, or hearing little kids talking/laughing/crying during a matinee showing of a cartoon, but otherwise, either STFU or go home and rent it when it comes out on DVD so you can interupt your family and not mine!
  15. Yes MMPI could break ground on a Cleveland medical mart by October By Laura Johnston, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Developer MMPI could break ground by October on a much-anticipated medical mart for downtown Cleveland, according to a construction agreement introduced to Cuyahoga County commissioners this morning. The county's contract attorney also said MMPI will abandon controversial plans to build the mart -- part of a taxpayer-financed $425 million convention center complex -- on the north end of the downtown Mall, between City Hall and the Lakeside Avenue courthouse.
  16. ^I'm Ok with Dayton, it is at least a notable city, but I agree on all the small towns. I don't see a point in having the train stop in towns with less than 100,000 people. I understand that otherwise these towns will not have any inter-city public transportation, and that many of these towns will only add 5 or so minutes, but if it slows the train down it will diminish the value of the whole line. I feel simlilarly about all of Amtrak. Besides not coming to Cleveland at a decent hour, I won't ride Amtrak because it is just too darn slow because they stop in every little town.
  17. Yeah, I emailed Laketran and Jessie Baginski their Director of Communications basically explained that the Plain Dealer got the numbers wrong. I just hadn't gotten around to posting that yet.

  19. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/01/laketran_to_replace_antiquated.html Laketran to replace antiquated bus fare boxes with automated system By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer January 04, 2010, 8:00AM A casino chip, holy medal or store receipt may get you a free ride on a Laketran bus -- but not for long. Drivers even accepted personal checks as payment, a courtesy that ended Friday. The Lake County transit agency will replace its antiquated fare boxes this summer with an automated system. Not only will operators know whether the correct fare was deposited, but they also won't have to punch 10-ride tickets because riders will swipe them in a machine. Interesting, Laketran is currently losing about 50 grand a year from people not paying fare, so they are going to spend half a million dollars on new machines and hire a mechanic to maintain the new machines. I highly doubt that salary, payroll taxes, and benefits for a mechanic will be less than 50 grand a year, so essentially they're spending as much money as they'll save operating cost wise, while blowing over half a million in capital costs. Doesn't make any sense to me.

As someone that worked at Dick's in college I would recommend skipping it. The store isn't specialized enough so the employees tend to know a little about all kinds of stuff but aren't experts at anything. Of course the same could be said for most larger retailers. Also just a word of advice from a customer when I worked there, their website is NOT dicks.com.

  22. If things work out this could be a first step in the right direction. I certainly hope that financial difficulties don't prevent some sort of arrangement, though I'm not sure how you compromise when only one partner has cash. (even if its only a small amount of cash) By reducing redundancy and sharing maintenance facilities, administration, purchasing together, they could potentially save a little money by merging. If it works out and does save money (which I'm not terribly optimistic about) it could mean good news for the rest of the region too.

That's closer than you think. BMW and a few other companies already have "smart" cruise control that senses a vehicle in front or behind and adjusts the throttle/brakes to keep a safe distance. Yeah, a lot of new tech like that is under development or beginning to be used in a few higher end models, but I'm guessing within a decade we'll be seeing the auto makers tie in a lot of these technologies to make them close to fully automatic. I don't really think that we'll ever have completely driverless cars though as it would subject the automakers to too much liability.

I'm predicting... We'll see the end of hard drives, Most people will stop having separate screens for their computer and TV, Those screens will be OLED, Law enforcement is revolutionized when the police realize the criminals are so addicted to Facebook that they can't help posting that they just robbed a bank, murdered their spouse, etc. Osama Bin Laden is killed after posting to Twitter that the bomb just dropped at the compound he's staying in was 15 feet closer to Mecca than where he was. Cars are going to become even more "hybrid" by combining more technologies to gain efficiency without giving up power. Solar panels on the trunk roof and sterling engines along the exhaust for a couple extra watts translating into a couple extra horses. Cars become capable of driving themselves as technology that keeps them in their own lane is combined with radar capable of keeping them a safe distance from vehicles around, more accurate GPS and highly accurate maps. Automakers go bankrupt from lawsuits brought by ignorant passengers who told their car to go to Portland and find themselves in Portland ME when they meant Portland OR. (Or any other city name that's in multiple states) NanoTechnology develops microscopic mechanical treatments for viruses, Viruses develop immunity to those same treatments, Incandesent and CFL light bulbs are replaced by LEDs
