Well if only the magic "job growth" pot hadn't been stolen by those darn economic leprechauns we'd be all set.

If you had a free standing house in the suburbs with some space between you and your neighbors, it would probably be more tolerable. Well back you go onto my Ignore List...

Can I ask how a person can disapprove of mixing races without viewing the people as a whole one of the races negatively? While he may not view African Americans as less than Whites, he is at least projecting an assumption that the people of the African American society will be intolerant of a person of mixed descent. Projecting that assumption onto the race as a whole is by definition a form of prejudice, and therefore a form of racism.

    I really doubt that's a record.
  5. This is Burke's website: http://www.clevelandairport.com/site/470/default.aspx There is a link to a website and master plan at the top. edit: but after exploring the site, it doesn't appear the actual final report is posted. it does provide a contact though. It also has the times for the "upcoming" public meetings on the master plan that will happen in 2007. I love it when people keep the latest info on the website.
  6. Personnally I hate Savannah. Other than the historic district, which isn't that large, the city is just a hot mess. I'm not a fan of the south at all, I don't think there's a chance I would ever choose to live there again.
  7. I knew I read something about this, but couldn't remember where. If you'd like the port's official report summary on why they went with E 55th click here, otherwise I tried to summarize. The report summary has lots of maps and diagrams and isn't a terribly boring read if you're curious. 8. Isn't "look both ways" technically incorrect? As a pedestrian, if you only look left and right, you're likely to miss a bus that's coming around the corner at you. Isn't this the source of the problem to begin with? Well since Jerry frequents this thread, technically yes, we've all told RTA. No individually we haven't told RTA. saying we dont like it HERE is the easy way out. If you aren't cheatin', you're trying too hard.
  9. I think that was a consideration when the lakefront plan was created a few years ago, but it was a problem because the cranes would be too tall for the height restrictions for the airport. (I'm totally going by memory here, so don't trust me.)

Ok, it sounds like it’s time for another episode of Grumpy whining about how horribly the Army treated him… In December of 2005 the unit I was in was finishing up our year in Iraq. We had been promised that we’d be home in time for Christmas. By the 20th, the unit that was replacing us had shown up, we’d turned over all our vehicles, and most of the unit’s equipment was already headed home. On the night of the 23rd we loaded into a C-130 and flew to Ali As Saleem airbase in Kuwait. Once we got off the plane we went through customs, and were taken by bus to Kuwait City International Airport. Once there, we sat. And sat. And sat. Before we knew it, it was morning. The 24th. Eventually, around 10am, after we’d been sitting at the airport for 10 or 11 hours we were told that our flight had been commandeered by some VIPs. (We found out later that some higher ranking officers had decided they wanted to make it home to have Christmas with their families, and they thought they were more important than we were.) So we were taken by bus to some Marine Corps base nearby in Kuwait and put up in tents till we could get the next plane. At 6pm that evening we took the busses back to the airport to try and get another flight. Once back at the airport, we found out that this flight had been cancelled as the incoming plane couldn’t take off due to bad weather in Frankfurt. So we took the bus back to the base nearby and got to spend Christmas night sleeping in a tent. Christmas morning we got to eat MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) and try to avoid going out of the tent as it was pouring rain. (And of course our rain coats were all packed up and halfway across the ocean by this time.) On the evening of the 26th around 7pm we finally got loaded onto a plane and took off. The 747 was packed full of soldiers that hadn’t had a shower in 3 or 4 days because all our bags had gone through customs on the 23rd and we couldn’t get them back, so you can imagine how that smelled. I have no idea what time we got to Frankfurt and refueled, but I think we were on the ground 3 hours, then we had to stop and refuel again at Bangor Maine, which took another few hours. Then we finally got to Hunter Army Airfield around 11am on the 27th. If my math is correct because of the time difference that means I was crammed into a coach seat in a plane that smelled like unwashed backside for 24 straight hours. It makes me want to go home and take a shower just thinking about it.

I've heard "it's going to be a bumpy ride" several times in movies. Maybe you're just thinking of different movies. And if I worked for MTS, considering some of the stories he's told, guarding my loins would be perfectly appropriate when he's on a rampage, accurate to the traditional usage of the phrase or not.
  13. take a cab or have someone drop you off. MayDay has made a map. search his name and amtrak. Or, if you haven't already, you could check out RTA. They do run infrequently throughout the night on many routes. Riding the 26 to the WFL?? That is probably more of a pain than just taking a cab. Well I don't know where jmjr is coming from, but if the 26 goes by where he/she lives than why would he need the WFL? The walk from Superior to the Amtrak station isn't that far. Even with luggage it shouldn't take more than a couple minutes to walk a quarter mile. Sure a cab would be easier, but why spend the money if you don't have to? (I'm cheap, in case you haven't noticed.)

I'd rather reply and not vote. Wait, why are you trying to keep me from replying? Are you trying to silence my opinion? Are you trying to keep me down? Are you trying to censor me? I take issue with this censorship! Down with silence! Power to the people! Freedom! Does anyone know where I left my crazy pills this morning?
  16. Chicago and NY, no, but they do in Vienna, and several other places in Europe. The system works very well there. If RTA can get the vending machines working right, get cops onto the trains rather than checking at the stops, and people get used to it, it will work better than the way things used to. Seriously though, the cops at TC need to be on the trains, not at the station. The only way that this system works better than what we had is for people to be held up looking for their pass while already on the way on the train/BRT. If you're holding people up at a station whether getting on or off, than you're defeating all the advantages of proof of purchase.

True, but we drive so little that we basically just get an oil change every 6 months without looking at mileage, so an extra few miles once in a while doesn't make much of a difference. If I started driving regularly, than that would be a different story. Just like by buying monthly passes, I can save on bus fare.

I’m easily amused and the weather was nice for a good portion of the last few weeks, so I decided to figure out all my possibilities for commuting to and from work. Drive - 30-35 minutes each way, 5 second walk to the driveway 16 miles each way at 32 mpg = 1 gallon per day = $2.30 for gas $3.00 for parking Total = $5.30 per day, plus listening to my wife complain that I took the car Bus Route 12 (Laketran) – 45-50 minutes each way, 3 minute walk to the bus stop $3.75 fare each way, or $7.50 per day Bus Route 39 (RTA) – 50-60 minutes each way, 15 minute walk to the bus stop $2.25 fare each way, or $4.50 per day (The schedule says it takes less time than this, but it’s always behind by the end) Bus Route 39F (RTA) – 45-50 minutes each way, 15 minute walk to the bus stop $2.25 fare each way, or $4.50 per day Bus Route 239 (RTA) – 35-40 minutes each way, 55 minute walk to the bus stop $2.50 fare each way, or $5.00 per day Walk – 306 minutes each way (I only did it once so I don’t have a range of time) $25 co-pay for my doctor to tell me I have stress fractures in my foot and I shouldn’t walk so much, but that I'm overweight so I need to find a better way of exercising.
  19. This is dissapointing and I don't really understand the logic from the port authority.
  20. ^Thanks. I guess it's nice that they're avoiding the Browns' home games, that seems to be the only time they get significant ridership on the line.

I was excited about the idea of the games coming to the mid-west with Chicago, but between events I'd much rather look at the scenery of Brazil than Illinois. Plus, Rio knows how to throw a party.
  23. i believe this is the reconstruction of the two chutes that exit from tower city. they are being completely rebuilt. Any idea why they need to be completely rebuilt?
  24. Sheesh, hold a grudge much? :-P Yes, but if I'm being an idiot and forget about the center street bridge while looking at the map, then it looks a lot further and up hill. Sorry, I'll go remove this darn foot from my mouth now. True, true. Still it would be nice if transit to the aquarium was easier. I still think that there are better places than the powerhouse for it.
  25. Why must everything be in one place? WHY??!!! And I don't want to here "well it's done like that in X place". If properly marketed this could be the thing that helps pump more people - permanent and visitors - into the west bank. If they want to visit NCH, that another "area" they will make a must see. Concentrating everything in once place is not always the answer. Why you ask? How about it would be nice to be able to get to the aquarium without driving? I really doubt that RTA would divert a bus to go down to the west bank of the flats for an aquarium considering their financial woes, so the nearest bus stop is W25 and Detroit. I know it's less than a half mile from W25th and Detroit to the powerhouse, but for an attraction that will bring mostly families, it would be ideal IMO for it to be somewhere that most of us can get to either on foot from downtown while pushing a stroller or with a very short walk from a bus/brt/train from downtown. Considering that half mile walk is uphill on the way out of the flats, it's not very pedestrian friendly. (Have you ever pushed a stroller with a whiny kid uphill for half a mile? Or tried to drag a toddler that far that has decided after walking around the aquarium their feet are tired and they just want a nap?) If I didn't know better I'd think that you're endorsing a location that guarantees that most customers drive. If an aquarium ends up in the powerhouse, I can guarantee my wife wouldn't try to get there without the car, and I doubt too many other parents with small children would try either, and I assume families with small children are going to be one of the primary target audiences of an aquarium. I don't think it everything must "be in one place", but I do think it should be somewhere more walkable for families than the powerhouse. (I should add the disclaimer that the last time I walked from the west bank of the flats to downtown was well over a decade ago and I was not completely sober, so the steepness of the hill may not be as significant as I remember.)
