Rethinking Transport in the USA
I really hope that a mileage based system someday happens, but is combined with a gas tax, rather than replacing it. I think we ought to be taking more tax money from the gas guzzlers so as to give more incentive to use fuel efficient vehicles. However the pessimist in me is saying that this will never happen (too many politicians unwilling to go on record voting for raising taxes) and congress will keep funding the Federal Highway Trust Fund from the general fund and we'll be paying for it with income tax, or increased budget deficits, at least for the foreseeable future.

This was in MedCityNews a few days ago. It probably could have gone in one of several threads... Cleveland considers a cluster. Health care? Technology? And can it be done? June 2, 2009 by Chris Seper

Yes, both spellings are accepted. On a different note, have you ever skimmed over a thread for the first time in a while, re-read some posts to try and figure out how the discussion got to where it is and noticed that someone made a completely ignorant comment about a month ago but no one called them on it, and then gotten conflicted over whether you should correct them, even though the discussion has completely moved on?

Cleveland: Random Development and News
While SuperKidSpliff was rude about it, he's correct that OmniMax and IMAX are very different. Omnimax does NOT play IMAX films "in a 3D dome format". Omnimax is a dome and therefore not suitable for playing "typical" movies like an IMAX. Omnimax and IMAX are not compatible systems. I was hoping the Flat East Bank would get a 3D IMAX system. The closest IMAX is in Columbus. An IMAX downtown would be a good draw for suburbanites. You're incorrect. Omnimax, also called IMAX Dome was invented by Imax and uses the same film, but a different projector and screen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX The Omnimax at GLSC has shown a couple major movies over the years, though only for special events, like when the latest Harry Potter came out. I do agree that an Imax or Omnimax downtown that showed feature films would be great.

Yeah, I'm choosing not to look at my 401k. I'm just not that brave.

I know KJP has drawn some maps upthread on shifting some rail to the median of the OC, but I don't think anyone has taken the ideas seriously enough to put together a price.

Other Countries: Passenger Rail News
Well if they mean train service like what we've got, i.e. Amtrack, then they're correct, I certainly don't want that. I want a train that'll get me where I want to go at a decent speed, and a decent hour, and I suspect most Americans want the same. I'm not holding my breath, the oil companies and highway construction lobbies haven't gone anywhere.

might I suggest reading or searching articles in this very thread. Well to save you reading 85 pages worth of posts, last year the E&Y tower was announced as 20 or 21 floors. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,1823.msg283399/topicseen.html#msg283399

Maybe I'm crazy, but isn't that more like an 8 story building? Not that it really matters... but let's get our facts straight! Yep, its 8 stories. Or at least looks like it from here.

I'll have to take your word for it as I have no knowledge of him other than a lot of quotes from articles like what was posted. In most of the quotes I've seen, he's seemed out of touch, if not outright ignorant. That's quite possibly just the quotes that have made the news, but maybe he needs to be clearer in what he means to avoid giving this impression.

I thought Angels and Demons was ok. On an unrelated topic, I just got offered a new job. I'm still working at the same place and making the same salary, but its a different department on a different floor. Maybe this means I'll be a little less bored with my work and spend more time doing it instead of playing on the internet.

^ Yeah, pretty fair. Though I understand the need for a counterpoint to the positives of the HL, I wish people would stop talking to Krumholz. No one is expecting that kind of ridership, but last time I rode the HL was pretty packed. I'm pretty sure we're seeing ridership as high as what was expected/hoped for. The man seems either obsolete or out of touch.

DIY Micro Turbines
I've thought for a couple years about building one behind my garage. Its somewhere on the list of things I'd like to do around my house but haven't found the time. From the little research I've done, it doesn't look like it would be terribly hard, but if you find any good information online or any good books on it let me know.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
The arrests of two building inspectors won't convince anyone to build that wouldn't have before. If you read what the most recent arrests are for ( here ) you'll see it was just for adding and removing violations on houses that were already built. Its not like this corruption was in any way affecting new construction, just the price of a couple of homes. And even if the individuals involved were involved in larger schemes, theres usually better money, bribe wise, available to building inspectors that allow buildings to go up, than that prevent them from going up. I do see your point that buildings could be built faster if there is less chance of the owners being shaken down for a 'donation' but I don't think theres evidence that this was happening on that large a scale or preventing businesses with quality buildings/plans from building/opening.

Pet Peeves!
Ok, this one has bothered me for years and I've seen it twice today on UO. -People that compare the drinking age to the age at which one can join the military. Hate to tell you folks but you grow up slowly over a period of many years. Are the ages at which our society decides you're more mature silly? Yes, or course. But advocating young people getting all their rights at 18 is just as rediculous. I'll ignore comments of that type if you can convince me you didn't get your drivers license, start wearing deoderant, get rid of your training wheels, start shaving, start wearing a training bra, stop requiring mommy to walk you across the street, and stop breast-feeding, till you were 18 too. Otherwise STFU with that worthless comparison.

Beach Vacation ... most affordable ... blue water and white sand ... most fun?
I'm not really a beach lover myself, but I've been dragged to my fair share of them. Here are the ones I remember. I haven't been to the outer banks since I was a kid, so I couldn't tell you much about it except that the water was very cold even in mid June. (That might have been specific to that year though) Myrtle Beach is still fun around spring break and right after schools let out for summer if you plan to drink like a fish, but otherwise its way overcrowded and overrated. Hilton Head's beaches are only so so quality, (somewhere closer to really fine gravel than the soft white sand that everyone wants to find) but you pay way too much for a hotel and you feel like you're in the middle of a crowd the whole time you're on the beach. Hilton Head seems like a better place for a round of golf than an afternoon on the sand. (Also crazy humid in the summer.) Tybee's beach is relatively quiet. Its never trouble getting a spot on the sand and not having people surrounding you. Also much cheaper than Hilton Head, though of similar quality. The Golden Islands are south of Tybee and are a little nicer and still small crowds, but they get a little pricey (hotel wise) as they seem to be trying to portray themselves as "exclusive". I don't remember what beach I was at near Jacksonville, but I was unimpressed. It looked like a shanty town next to a pile of gravel with water that smelled more like dead fish than anything else. Cocoa Beach (East of Orlando) is not very nice unless you're trying to get a tan on a dirty beach while watching a shuttle launch. My sister really likes Fort Myers, FL and has visited several times, but I've never been myself.

Cleveland subway tours. Worth the drive?
For even more pictures of how it used to look, (for the true nerds) check out these. I've wanted to check out the tour for a few years, but everytime they have it, I've already got other plans. Thanks for the photos of it.
