I just want to second Mill Creek Park. Absolutely beautiful.

Well, Sheesh. I didn't expect an essay from you, just a clarification of what you meant by your comment. I should have known better.

Well, just to play devil's advocate for a second, (forgive me it's a Monday) if you think that a lack of growth is a reason for not expanding the highway system, why do you think a lack of growth is not a reason for not expanding the rail system?
  4. Some nut was rambling on and on about how screwed up Cleveland was on the Blue line all the way from Shaker Square to Downtown, and had a real issue with the subway under the Detroit Superior bridge not being extended because Cleveland's leaders were so incompetant. I knew that he was a nut and most of his facts were wrong but when I got to work I tried to look up better information on the subject purely for my own curiosity, and found UO. I lurked on here for about 6 months before making my first post and quit looking at the site for a while (assuming that this site wasn't more sophisticated than Cleveland.com after all) after someone referred to my hometown as "a sh!t hole full of welfare collecting single mothers and meth addicts."
  5. Cardsnxtyr, try the Cleveland Memory project. They have tons of pictures of the neighborhood, though few as far west as you're talking about. Here are a few I found pretty quickly. http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/fenn&CISOPTR=302&CISOBOX=1&REC=5 http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/fenn&CISOPTR=340&CISOBOX=1&REC=6 http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/fenn&CISOPTR=342&CISOBOX=1&REC=8 http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/fenn&CISOPTR=341&CISOBOX=1&REC=7 http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/fenn&CISOPTR=345&CISOBOX=1&REC=8 http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/fenn&CISOPTR=299&CISOBOX=1&REC=5 http://images.ulib.csuohio.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/fenn&CISOPTR=296&CISOBOX=1&REC=5
  6. They might just do something else, and sure some do. But research has showed in several cities that put up fences on their bridges that suicide rates go down after prominent bridges known for being used for suicides have fences put up, the suicide rate goes down. I think that makes this idea worth using stimulus money on. Anything that can at least get a person to one therapy session. Stoping the "attempt" (prevention) is one thing, getting to the root of the issues (depression, shock, etc.) is equally important. That, I'll agree with.

  8. First welcome to the board. Second, try using the search feature. Third, the building is being torn down. The big red crane on the west side of the property has a wrecking ball attached to it. The windows are being removed not added. In fact this morning it looked there were only windows in the top couple floors.

^^ Well to make it a little more realistic, maybe we should consider boarding schools. Put the kids up in a supervised environment and just send them home for the weekends. They'd have time to do homework and learn how to act responsibly from adults, but still get to see their families for a couple days each week.
  10. MTS, I'm sorry that you've personnally experienced something like this, but several studies have shown that suicide fences on bridges are actually quite effective and that people prevented from committing suicide typically don't try again. See http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2008/07/10/suicide-barriers-are-effective/ I don't consider a method of preventing (or reducing) suicides, with a method that studies have shown to be effective, to be a waste of money. Especially since $7.5 million is already going toward rehabbing the bridge, why not build a fence? Is a fence really that big of a waste of money? Maybe I'm just living up to my nickname, but I don't think joking about suicide is in good taste.
  11. Well technically the train is going through Crestline, so there's your third C. No one really cares about going all the way to Cincy do they? :-P
  12. ^^Well to aid your laziness, no there probably won't be many more turbines in downtown. Most of the wind power ideas under consideration are offshore, and anything else would probably end up on cheaper real estate than downtown. I know the wind really likes to swirl between the buildings downtown, but an area built up like downtown is generally a poor location for wind turbines for several reasons: First, wind turbines aren't especially attractive to look at. I kind of like the way they look, but I'm probably the exception. Either way, they don't really mesh well with the architecture in downtown. Keep in mind, the turbine at the GLSC is comparatively small, and any being used for serious power production would be significantly larger. Second, in general the real estate inn downtown is too expensive to be used for wind turbines. If you factor in the cost of buying the real estate to stick the turbine on, it would make the start up costs so high that the turbine would never be anywhere near profitable without some ridiculous incentives. It's my understanding that the GLSC put up their turbine knowing this but did it as a demonstration project to show the potential of wind turbines. Third, the bird factor. For the most part, the idea of birds getting hit by the blades of turbines has been completely overblown, (Most birds are stupid, but not that stupid), but the public would still be opposed because they'd be afraid that the rats with wings would get sliced and diced onto the sidewalks of downtown. Fourth, because the land under the turbines would be basically unusable, it's pretty poor land usage to put up wind turbines in a built up area. Again keep in mind that the GLSC turbine is relatively small, and that turbines for serious power production would take up much more space. Fifth, the wind patterns in a downtown area are too unpredictable to use for sustained wind generation. For example, the bus stop at E. 9th and St Clair (Where I catch my bus most afternoons) is just crazy windy if the wind is coming from the NW because of the way the wind swirls around, but if the wind is coming from any other direction, its perfectly calm there. The same thing applies to virtually everywhere in downtown because the wind patterns are completely unpredictable as a result of all the swirling around over and around the buildings. The most stable, predictable, and sustained winds in the area are generally at least 100 feet above the surface of the lake, which is why there's so much talk of offshore wind power. Oh, and by the way, a windmill is used to grind grain into flour. A wind turbine is used to turn a generator and provide electricity.

^Remind me to be nice to you. I've only lost my wallet once, but I happened to be out of town (Charleston, SC) and needed to catch a flight that morning. With no ID to get past airport security, and no cash for a cab to the airport, I was stuck. I still have no idea what happened to the wallet, but I had to have my wife (girlfriend at the time) send me some cash Western Union, so that I could buy a bus ticket home. That sucked. Do you know how long it takes to get from South Carolina to Akron on a Greyhound?
  14. Which project was this? By the way, enthusiasm is good. However, I've developed a wait-and-see attitude regarding anything anymore. I want those projects to happen, too, and I really hope they do. Exactly. We all want to see all these projects happen, and it does look good, but don't hold your breath. - The Mall looks like its almost a sure thing, but with construction not kicking off till Fall 2010, don't expect to be playing frisbee on that nice new mall till at least 2012. - As for the train station, I'm not getting my hopes up. RTA hasn't been pushing for the NorthCoast Transit Center, nor has anyone else official that I'm aware of. So I'm expecting a slightly nicer AmShack, but hoping I'm wrong. - The port is intending to move over the next couple decades, but nothing is set in stone yet. And without seeing their plans we don't yet know if we should be too excited. With all that said, I will agree that momentum is building, and this is great news. I'm a firm believer in keeping celebrations low key so I don't look like an idiot when stuff happens.
  15. Probably a stupid question, but has anyone ever considered iminent domain to take a right of way from a completely uncooperative railroad?
  16. Susan Goldberg is apparently just sending out the same message to everyone as a form letter. I got the exact same email from her in reply to a letter I sent yesterday afternoon.
  17. Some of us have complained before, but didn't feel the need to post a copy of the letter here. If I'd gotten a reply or had the letter published, that would be different. The latest letter I've sent was this morning, to the editor, and to the writer of the film industry article, but it was not polite and used words not appropriate for this forum. I've written several more polite and professional letters previously.

What are you smoking? Calico was so much more expensive, and had a lot fewer games.

Really? Who just started this thread by posting something that was obviously a forward? (I got the exact same thing from a coworker a couple months ago.)

What's to figure out? You walked, then you fell down the hole. End of game.

I'll be 30 in a few months but I feel the need to respond as a member of the under 30 crowd. The internet was invented in 1957. Its not our fault that you didn't have a computer. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_was_the_Internet_invented We had a mail slot in my parents first house where I lived almost 30 years ago. So do many houses over 30 years old. Stamps were 15 cents 30 years ago. http://www.akdart.com/postrate.html Yeah, that still applied when I was growing up. It was easier to borrow the tape from the library, put it in your tape deck, and put a blank tape in your brother's tape deck, then just leave them alone in your room for an hour or so. Unfortunately, this once resulted in me getting a tape of my parents fooling around in the bathroom that was next to my bedroom. You had cars? As kids? We had to wait till we were 16, get a job, than buy some piece of crap where the radio didn't even work, the roof leaked when it rained, the smell of pot smoke wouldn't come out now matter how many air fresheners I put in it and that eventually was totalled when I hit a pothole in the church parking lot going 5mph. (It snapped the rusted out frame) There were hundreds of Atari 2600 games, many of which involved more than a mere dot. I was awesome at Snoopy vs. the Red Baron. Micro waves have been around since 1947. Not our fault you didn't have one. http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/history.html

It seems more like an overreaction to me. A coworker of mine sneezed this morning, does that mean I can use a sick day tomorrow?
  23. I have to hope this explains it, but they're throwing away their own credibility this way. I'm more disappointed than anything else by the whole mess.
  24. Its actually posted in both entertainment and metro sections with separate comments, most of which are calling them out on the stupidity of the article.
  25. Doesn't Cleveland have plenty of empty buildings that could be used by the film industry, if they wanted to be here? I can think of a couple of former malls in Randall Park and Euclid that don't seem occupied, have plenty of square footage, have high ceilings like the current convention center, that could be used if the film industry really wanted to be in the area.
