Well I understand "Warehouse District", but I don't use the word Historic in front of it. Its old and its pretty but I don't consider it historic unless I can come up with some historical event that happened there within a few seconds. I'm sure some people on this board can come up something off the top of their head, but I can't, so I'm just calling it the Warehouse District. Gateway I can live with, as when I came to Cleveland occasionally as a kid we always came through that part of town. But in addition to the reason I gave above, I won't call it Historic because I remember when Gateway was built. Ohio City, Kirtland ,Collinwood and a bunch of other neighborhoods make sense as they used to be separate towns with those names. Battery Park annoys me quite a bit. Just a rip-off of a better known neighborhood. Avenue District annoys me too, as last time I checked, most neighborhoods have Avenue's running through them. North Coast is just a bad joke.
  4. Not a joke, I think I might have seen MayDay outside yesterday when the elephants came by.

I voted for other, because I can't really make up my mind. I've visited and really liked Denver, DC, Chicago and New York, but I don't like any of them enough to call them my favorite. I've visited and disliked a bunch of other cities on and off the list above. (If someone mentions El Paso, I'm going to get kicked off this board for my response to them.) Actually looking back at the list there's only a couple that I haven't been to. (or haven't spent enough time recently to clearly remember much about them.) Philly is kind of a crappy town in my mind, but its special to me for personal reasons. Colorado Springs and Santa Fe are nice cities, but I don't have any emotional attachment to them. I've lived in or near Savannah GA, Charleston SC, San Antonio TX, and Columbia SC any of which I'd be happy to visit again, (well, maybe not Columbia) but living there once was enough. Now, if someone wanted to poll favorite foreign city, that I could pick.

Just another followup to this. In an internal announcement about this that I got in my email a few minutes ago I saw this line. So apparently either our local media misunderstood, or our local representatives are bragging about jobs that have already come here and just grandstanding. Either way I'm satisfied with more people working downtown.
  8. ^^That's really impressive.

Well, I don't really know neighborhoods in Toronto, but it only took me a few seconds to find Church St.

Even as a lover of our beautiful winters, I'll second that. I truely love our winters, but I swear that f'ing groundhog is going out of his way to find his shaddow every year.

^Are you referencing a bad 80's sitcom? (I'm not guessing because it's too hard to find pics to post at work.)

I'm the first to vote for Winter? Wow, I can't imagine a better way to spend a day than curled up with my wife under a blanket on the couch with some hot chocolate. I just might open a window for a few minutes and try that this evening.

  15. I voted for 7 hours, because I feel like that would be ideal for me. However since I have an infant at home that hasn't figured out how to sleep through the night yet, I've learned that I can function well enough on 4 or 5 hours. Also I've figured out that bus drivers almost always make sure everyone is awake and off the bus when they get to the end of the route.

The last official word that I can find about a new building in the flats was the following from DFAS-CL director Marth J. Smith in a newsletter last november...
  17. I haven't been to a Bob Evans in a few years. The last time I went was a bunch of friends in Kent, and as I walked in I was staring across the street at Mike's Place and wishing I could have convinced everyone to just go there. After I got my order, I really really wished I had gone across the street, friends or not.

^Correct, the 600ish have been here a while. I'm one of them and have been here a year and a half. And a portion of the 200ish newer jobs have been here for a few months. While its always nice to see new jobs come to Cleveland, this is particularly nice as the Federal Government has a pretty nice percentage of people that use public transit. (Of course your federal taxes pay for us to get monthly passes, but hey, that's still a few more people using RTA and Laketran.)

There is enough room for everyone here, but I think the building is just about at capacity. I know a few people on other floors that are sharing cubicles with people. DFAS is already leasing space over at the Northpoint building, but that's only temporary while a couple floors are being rehabbed. Some of the Marine corps people are already working here, though at the moment they are working out of cubicles made from what used to be the 25th floor conference room.

Don't ask me where I read about this, but essentially ODOT was inspecting bridges like this every two years. (now every year) However without Minneapolis, the inspections probably weren't as indepth as they are now, and their results weren't taken as seriously. After all the Minneapolis bridge had been inspected within a couple years before it collapsed.

I lived in San Antonio from 2000 till 2003 and really liked it. Of course I was a newlywed then, so I'd have been happy anywhere. Downtown is dead essentially because no one lives there. Most of the people in the area do live in the City though. As people have moved outwards into the sprawl, the city has aquired more and more land to keep its expanding population within the city. While the sprawl is sad to see, it has allowed the city to be in a financial situation where it can afford to rehab a lot of its older neighborhoods. They're still crimeridden old neighborhoods, but at least they're nice enough that some people are willing to live there. The city is very very auto centric and there's not a significant portion of the population that uses public transit. It doesn't help that VIA, the local transit agency is very poorly run. (I worked there part-time for a little while and know for a fact how poorly it's run. I was one of the only workers in the main office that didn't drive to work if that gives you an idea.)
  25. Well, I agree with the local opinion of the Federal Building. The others all seem interesting to me.
