We've been doing little more than speculating for 148 pages, why stop now?

    official now. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/01/mike_pettine_cleveland_browns.html#incart_maj-story-2
  3. That's been the rumor for a couple years, but I haven't heard anything concrete. I think we're always willing to see some photos. :-)

That was tweeted last night while Pettine was having his second interview. Browns are doing another interview today though. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/01/browns_leave_senior_bowl_with.html At this point it seems likely that whomever becomes coach will be someone we've never heard of.
  5. The only reason I like the idea of keeping the Shaker lines as they currently exist (besides that it would cost more than RTA is willing to invest to move one of them) is that having 2 lines makes the areas around the E116 and Buckeye/Woodhill stations twice as attractive for TOD (if we could ever get developers in the area interested).
  6. I do like Ken's idea of extending to Noble, but if a rail extension can't happen (and I remain convinced it won't because why get my hopes up?), it'd be really nice to have a flyer operate from Euclid to Windermere or UC with limited stops (every mile or so) so that it could build ridership for a future rail extension, but I'm just scared they'll decide to run a BRT-lite that stops way too damn often (like the Healthline) and takes just as long to travel through the area as the current busses. If that happens, it'll be failure since it doesn't have everything going for it like the HL did, and it might be a generation or more before someone considers anything else.
  7. ^^7/10 in great lakes states. Makes me wonder if Orkin just has more locations in the area.

Ha ha. Already posted that in the Rep. Boehner thread, as our Cincinnati-area congressman was a beneficiary of campaign funds from this chemical company. Ah, well, that's one of the threads I avoid.

There has been a decided lack of discussion on this topic. Are people on this blog are actually happy with the highway-only mindset at ODOT? I think a lot of us missed it because it came out over Christmas.
  11. Getting a little attention already. World's largest outdoor chandelier to illuminate Cleveland's Playhouse Square http://www.gizmag.com/ge-chandelier-worlds-largest-cleveland-playhouse-square/30472/ Playhouse Square in Cleveland's historic theater district is erecting what is claimed as the world's largest outdoor crystal chandelier. With a height of 20 ft (6 m) and comprising some 4,200 crystal pieces, the biggest surprise is that General Electric, which is designing the chandelier, believes it will stand up to Cleveland's extreme weather.
  12. Planes, Trains, & Pretty Much Everything Else More Efficient Than Cars Read more at http://cleantechnica.com/2014/01/14/planes-trains-pretty-much-everything-else-efficient-cars/#QmMr5t6HjQPDYLbu.99 A new report released by a research professor at the University of Michigan Research Institute looking at data collected from 1970 to 2010 has shown that pretty much every form of transportation is more efficient than the good old-fashioned light-duty vehicle. Michael Sivak examined recent trends to determine the energy needed to transport a single person a given distance in a light-duty vehicle — ie, cars, SUVs, pickups, and vans — or on a scheduled airline flight. His analysis was measured in BTU per person mile from 1970 to 2010, and found that the entire fleet of light-duty vehicles would need to improve their miles per gallon efficiency from 21.5 to 33.8, or increase their vehicle load from 1.38 persons to at least 2.3 persons to come anywhere near flight.

What's a TBDBITL? Nevermind I googled it and yes I saw them.

Well that should be a good show.
  15. Well I like it.
  16. Your comment said that a park and ride would be better than TOD (or at least that's how both KJP and I interpreted it). I would agree that there are better spots for TOD (mostly on the west side) but I would dispute that a park and ride would be better than TOD in the OC area.
  17. A couple reasons: - Save $ on parking at your final destination - You still need your car to get into the city because you live in the burbs - You need your car to pick up your kids, run errands, etc after work Unlike downtown, most employers in UC offer free parking. Plus, the Red line circles around the SE edge of UC, so you'd have to transfer to a bus or have a long walk. Are you really expecting people that have a car to park it in a neighborhood that's a bit sketchy to ride a train 3-4 miles to a station where they can transfer to a bus or walk a mile to work instead of just driving the last few miles? For comparison, how many people currently drive to Windermere from Euclid or Lake County? I'd guess very few, since if you've already driven 3/4 of the way to work, why not drive the last bit too? That's the reason why RTA is considering lengthening the Red Line.

Central Air is such a common retrofit that I'd somewhat expect it in a house, but I agree that you shouldn't expect an open floor plan in an older house unless it's been significantly redone (and thus has lost most of its charm.)
  19. Not too bad of an article, but a cautionary note: Calling Bill Lind a "conservative" is a lot like calling Art McCoy a "black activist". He might be right from time to time, but he's kind of out there.... Regardless of his "conservativeness", his best point is in his last paragraph...
  20. Always fun when that happens. :-)
  21. And my office. ;) BTW, I noticed a lot more workers in and around the Schofield Building today. And I also noticed these plastic things sticking out the back of the building. They look like huge condoms, but what are they really?? :-o They're used as a form of low cost filter for exhausted air during mitigation. Asbestos particles are larger than the pores in the plastic bag so they get caught but the air molecules can still get out. When they're done with work in that room/floor, all the workers have to do is tie up the bag and toss it. They're a reasonably common site when older buildings get rehabbed. They have to exhaust the rooms to create negative air pressure so that the particles don't blow into another part of the building.

Um, pretty sure he was saying the furnace was taking 10 minute breaks, not that he was turning it off for breaks.

^Welcome back by the way. It's been too quiet around here lately.

It's tough to load kids, especially multiple kids, into a Smart Car. Quite easy to load them into a Focus though. I chose share as technically there is a car in my name, but it's my wife's 99% of the time. I take the motorcycle about 75% of the year and take the bus most of the rest but I took the car today since school was cancelled and the wife is off work; no need to freeze at a bus stop if no one else need the car.

Hey, some of us are understanding. I, and many of my fellow morning folks, go out of our way to be nice to the folks that can't seem to figure out how to wake up at the right time. The problem is that you don't notice us, you just notice the assholes. On the same token, I have to assume there are some nightowls that are polite about keeping quiet late at night, but there's always some asshole that decides to cranks his music up on a Tuesday night till midnight that makes us think you folks are lazy good for nothing deadbeats that deserve to have to listen to our snowblowers at 6am. Note: I have never and will never fire up the snowblower or lawnmower prior to 8am, even if you do deserve it, because I realize that the rest of the street doesn't.
