  1. The article quoted the developer directly on this: “We’ve never built an outlet center that didn’t get government assistance for the reason that it really is different than other retail,” Claims of job creation are also a bit spurious. New retail just moves around money and jobs that already exist in the region. Unless everyone who shops here is from out of state, no “new” money is being generated.
  2. I think the Cincinnati and Columbus numbers represent units. Unless there were really 50k separate multi-unit projects built in Columbus in the past 10 years which I’m imagining would house half of the citizenry. As far as units in Cleveland, there are clearly more than what’s listed just in the Beacon and UC.
  3. I think so, although losing the parking lot at 25th/Detroit was huge. Now if something could replace the lots at Lutheran....
  4. That quiz is garbage. I took it against my better judgement. All of the questions are loaded and presuppose an adherence to conservative notions of morality. It sucks.
  5. Lots of bad land use on Madison, but the housing stock in the 80s/90s off Madison is actually really good. I’m a relatively pessimistic fellow but I could easily see this area turning around in the next 20 years. A few new apartment complexes facing Madison would really change the feel of the street. It’s relatively narrow as far as main streets go in Cleveland. There have always been (very very well hidden) artistic venues in and around this area. I think it’s already seen as a viable, cheaper alternative to Detroit Shoreway for some younger folks.
  6. My sources say that SW plans for Weston lots have been downgraded to a one-story retail paint store with 2k surface parking spots.
  7. Losing Ontario Street and Moriarty’s in a short stretch would hurt. Not many old dives left downtown.
  8. They answer your questions in the article
  9. Agee. Horrible to lose this type of building.
  10. Redirected from SW thread. No it’s not. Per KJP’s article, 87% of income tax revenue comes from outside the city. The increase is coming from jobs created in the city.
  11. Why do these things always fall on the public? We’re always so quick to lick corporate boots.
  12. I think it’s reasonable for people on a site called “Urban Ohio” to not want a highly prized employment asset to end up 16 miles from the city center. It’s not “good”. Pushing more jobs further out to the fringes has countless negative externalities. IMO it’s a wash whether these jobs end up Brecksville or Ljubljana. I don’t care nearly as much about relative regional strength as I do about the viability of the urban core, and I don’t think the correlation between the two is nearly as strong as I’m sure some would suggest.

A petition funded by a right-wing millionaire from Westlake? Sounds great!
  14. Riverview Towers, United Bank, Lakeview Tower, West Side Market, Church and State.
  15. Loved it! (Except for the picture of the Columbia building that one still smarts).
  16. Can’t wait to shop at Ohio City!
  17. My cynical guess would be the business community is “concerned” because the city is using its own land and not putting money in anybody’s pocket.
  18. That’s what I’m disagreeing with, that both sides benefit. I think the casino was a mistake, the Med Mart was a disaster, and the arena deal with Gilbert was at the very least questionable. All that experience is extremely relevant to this development. IMO if Moreno and Gilbert come begging for public subsidy, like the article suggests they say they will, they can kick rocks.
  19. I think it’s fair to know where he’s coming from if he’s stated he’s going to be seeking public subsidy. I was merely pointing out the irony. Considering the enormous funds that have gone to right wing billionaires from the Med Mart, casino, and recent arena “developments”, I think it’s fair to be skeptical of Moreno’s intentions.
  20. It’s especially disheartening if you go look at Moreno’s twitter feed. It’s filled with climate-change denying, libertarian, pro-capitalist garbage. But yes, of course we will be looking for public subsidy.
  21. And the mention of a dreaded “public-private partnership”. I don’t like how any of this feels. The idea seems half-baked and amorphous. It really feels more and more like a couple of rich guys leveraging public investment. SOP
  22. Looks like Moreno has been hard at work on his libertarian mod for Sims 4.
