Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Kinda psyched for summer league tonight. Cavs have a very interesting roster. Obviously top billing goes to Sexton. But I’m very interested to see if Preston had anything, and it will be nice to see Osman and Zizic actually get some run. Osman was showing off an improved 3 stroke at the FIBA qualifier against Ukraine.

Oops! Sorry carnevalem[/member]! Parallel thinking! Even Boston has only one of those past 30 chips. Boston, Cleveland, and Dallas are the only teams without multiple titles.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The league probably hasn’t seen anything like the Warriors before, but the NBA has always been imbalanced. It’s just the nature of the sport, since one or two players can influence the fortunes of a team so strongly. In the past 30 years, 7 teams have won 27 of the championships. I’ll keep tuning in though, because I love pro basketball and even watching a mediocre team is more entertaining to me than watching any other sport.

I mean, it’s sports. You’re either on my squad or you’re nothing. That’s what makes it fun! It’s not like he was running a charity. And he had no help in Cleveland? He had two 5-time all-stars in their prime. I agree he can do what he wants but why would fans here have to keep wishing him well? He don’t play for our team. Hahahahaha I mean...I know he ran several local charities....

He had two 5-time all-stars in their prime. It’s not like he came back out of the goodness of his heart. He left Miami because they were old and Cleveland had young talent. I agree he can do what he wants but why would fans here have to keep wishing him well? He don’t play for our team.

Hopefully someday heading up an ownership group to buy the Cavs from Gilbert. Yuck I hope not. I hope he never succeeds at anything ever again. He’s a disingenuous egomaniac. I mean, Gilbert is too, but I don’t want to see Lebron’s face around here again.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
The IPic I’ve been to has two types of seating. The recliners a la AMC theatres and then group couches with blankets and pillows you can use which also have table service. Kind of weird imo and the screens were definitely on the small side. Not saying that’s for sure going to be replicated here but it would have been sweet if he could have gotten an Alamo Drafthouse to commit. Those theatres are high end and uniformly excellent.

Totally agree. I rarely watch soccer but always watch World Cup. It’s enthralling.

It says lots are “available for sale or build to suit”. Doesn’t that suggest that Geis et al are not necessarily developing the site?

No the Cavs would have to actually sign the player. No trade could happen until August. You would have to just trust that Portland would keep their word.

Cavs wouldn't be able to trade both picks. They would have to retain one pick due to the Stepien rule.

Cleveland: Brooklyn Centre / Old Brooklyn: Development and News
As far as good smell memories in that stretch of Broadview, Michael’s was (is?) maybe a half mile down the street and smelled great!

Yes that’s right. I might be putting too much confidence in my adolescent memories but I think it was Hough first.

Cool! I've always known it as a bakery. First time I drove past it in the 1990s when I was getting to know the West Side, the wonderful smell of that bakery was strong to smell from inside a sealed car on a winter day. It wasn’t actually a bakery, just an outlet for nearly expired Hough products and...... I just realized I’m very old.

Electric Scooter Sharing
I liked the Bird scooters so much I ended up just buying one. Bird uses the Xiaomi M365 which retails [/member]$500. However Swagtron (I felt very embarrassed purchasing something from a company with that name) just started selling the 5, which as far as I can tell is manufactured by the same company but can be bought on the Swagtron website for $375. If you live in neighborhoods like Ohio City/Gordon Square/OTR/Short North they would be very practical for commuting to the respective downtowns, with a range of >10 miles. I mean, at least for the 2-ish months of the year in Ohio when it doesn’t snow /s.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I would say maybe the complete collapse of the industrial economy and centuries of racist policy in America has much more to do with Cleveland’s economic malaise than buildings. Every city has convention centers and sports stadiums. Maybe people just have a hard accepting that economies result from mostly circumstantial and uncontrollable factors.

Cleveland: Population Trends
It's not so much a moral/ethical dimension but one of competent policy and management. Speaking of Austin, much of its modern reputation is attributed to its live music culture. Cleveland collects a special tax on live music venues and allows a certain fun-averse activist to run around town shutting down parties with esoteric (but technically valid) zoning and building complaints. If we want to see Austin-like growth here, we should be boosting our local music culture rather than attacking it like John Lithgow in Footloose. Again, I agree with your proposal here, but Austin’s growth has 0.0000001% to do with its live music culture. Unless Michael Dell was inspired to found Dell computers after seeing a particularly ripping SXSW set in 1984 (3 years before it started). More to your point, Austin continues to grow explosively without the benefit of attractive neighborhood retail and atrocious zoning.

Cleveland: Population Trends
I didn't mention the mayor because a lot of this predates him. It's a matter of policy, it's bigger than any one office or person. Do you really believe neighborhood quality is irrelevant to population losses? We need to stop focusing on factors we can't control and do a better job with the ones we can. We can't expect outsiders, from Washington or from Wall Street, to come in and fix up this mess. That is for locals to do, with whatever resources we have available. And we do have resources here, but the policies that determine how we utilize them have got to change. Rebuilding neighborhoods the way we did in Central will not lead to growth. By and large, people are not seeking that kind of living arrangement in that kind of area. People who might consider relocating to an inner city are instead looking for density and walkability. We can choose to build marketable urbanity, or we can choose not to, but we can't blame anyone else for the choices we make about what kind of community we want to be. Everything you’re saying is absolutely true. But I think what X is getting at is that the larger economic factors have much more impact than any local-level decision making. Cleveland didn’t get big because of sound urban planning policy. Location and industry built it and location and industry decimated (x6) it. What does our location say to industry right now? We're known for ruined neighborhoods and obstructionist government. But we also have a lot of historic building stock that few cities can offer, and that sort of thing happens to be popular again. So we can choose to become the best location we can be, making the most of what we have, or we can keep assigning godlike powers to outside forces and refusing to accept responsibility for our own choices. I never said that managing our community competently would solve everything. That's a straw man. But do you think it would hurt? Why not give it a try? No I definitely agree with almost all of your points, especially when you consistently mention investing in neighborhood retail building stock. I just don’t think it’s more than marginally relevant to population gain. I’m not even sure population gain is that important. At the same time, I’m always wary of assigning anthropomorphic qualities to metropolitan regions. When you say “accept responsibility for our own choices” it seems to ascribe a moral or at least ethical quality to the whole population of greater Cleveland. Does that mean Austin is more moral/ethical or that Detroit is full of stupid people?

Electric Scooter Sharing
We just got Bird in Austin and I took my first ride today. It was pretty awesome. And cheaper than bike shares from what I could tell. Took it out for an hour, went 7.5 miles and spent $10.

Cleveland: Population Trends
Here’s the thing though: I always have mixed feelings about that. Im VERY pro immigration in general and pro immigration to Cleveland specifically as well. But there is a very real concern about disenfranchising black residents (of which I am one). That’s a legitimate concern and it’s something that a lot of cities are currently dealing with. I don’t think it’s good to act as if there are NO legitimate concerns with that and to write it ALL off as politicians wanting to maintain their power base. I believe that if we can adequately address that concern, we can get over that hump. If it can be presented that new immigrants are not a threat to black residents (who are, for now at least, still the majority of this city) we can get somewhere. But ignoring those concerns do nothing to move it out of the way and get progress going This 10000%. I think this goes hand in hand with undervaluing the fact that the culture of Cleveland IS largely African-American. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I just went to New Orleans and while all of the redevelopment is nice to see, I couldn’t help but think the town had been largely white-washed. Concerns about diluting AA culture are legitimate.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I'd much rather face Houston than GSW, but admittedly I haven't been following the West much at all this year. The Rockets finished SEVEN games better than Golden State? GS had lots of injuries/didn’t care as much. They had a semi Cavs-y regular season. Still the best team in the NBA by a stretch (unfortunately).

Cleveland City Council
I used to work with a number of council people on the west side and this kind of low-level corruption/incompetence is rife. It’s almost all petty at the council level, so any individual action will seem relatively inconsequential. But it’s nice to see one of these little princes get called out for once. It’s especially sweet considering how Cimperman never missed a chance to be on camera.
