  1. First they came for my Bugsy’s and I said nothing…
  2. Why wouldn’t the solution be “let’s figure out a way to house people who work in Los Angeles”? Good for Lazarus that he can write his Pat Buchanan fan fiction anywhere, but having a legitimate job and being unable to get housing is not a matter of life choices.
  3. So you just have a general disdain for writers, journalists, and artists? What is the point here? Did you have a novel rejected by multiple publishers? A failed screenplay? Is it just that you’re not very good at drawing?

My favorite place on earth Piazza Navona: Piazza Del Popolo: Villa Borghese: Saint John Lateran: This was my favorite ancient site we visited. Saint Clement is an 11th century basilica near the Colosseum. Underneath the 11th century church is the original 4th century basilica. Underneath THAT is a 2nd century temple dedicated to Mithras. The church itself is beautiful, and winding further and further down the complex is a pretty thrilling experience (if you are a huge dork) This was my favorite part. This was originally thought to be an 8th century fresco of the Virgin. Current opinion is that it’s actually a modified portrait of the 6th century Eastern Roman empress Theodora. Needless to say there aren’t many 6th century paintings hanging around, especially in the western empire. The previously mentioned Mithraic temple Our Airbnb was near the Ponte Sant’Angelo: In and around the Vatican: The Forum: Out and about:

It is very beautiful country around there. Halifax and Hebden Bridge are sort of in the foothills of the Yorkshire Dales near Brontë Country. So heavy Wuthering Heights vibes and pretty dramatic scenery.

Like I said my family lives in Halifax so I suppose I rep the white rose. Although I don’t know if Irish Catholics were particularly welcome on either team. Halifax has definitely come a long way. The renovation of the Piece Hall has been especially beneficial and it’s a great space especially during the holidays. Halifax is also well positioned between Manchester and Leeds. It’s a very easy direct train to either city.

Probably should have led with Yorkshire before posting Italy pics but oh well. I have UK citizenship via my mother and most of my family still lives in Halifax in West Yorkshire. So even in England I’m from the rust belt. Halifax, mighty cultural and political center of the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale (aka Happy Valley for those with an Acorn subscription). A lot of golden hour pictures here, which in England in November was 2:30pm lol. Hebden Bridge, also in Calderdale Leeds, economic powerhouse of West Yorkshire York City:

There’s nowhere like it. Everybody should get to see it once. Also great food if you put in a little work.

A little slice of Italy in Croatia. We stayed in Rovinj but made forays into the countryside and Pula. Most of Istria was ruled by the Venetians for centuries and the influence is evident. Lots of St. Marks lions, Venetian windows, and the distinctive bell towers. Rovinj: There was an ancient 6th century basilica in Poreč so we made a trip up the coast Serious rosemary-age Ate lunch at a classic donoba (casual tavern/restaurant) in the countryside around Poreč. Olive oil and truffles for days Pula: There are also a number of fantastic hill towns in Istria like Motovun and Grožnjan Motovun: Grožnjan:

Trieste is an elegant city straddling Italy, Central Europe, and the Balkans. It was the entrepôt for the Austro-Hungarians into the Mediterranean. Consequently it has a bit of a Central European feel, with lots of Art Nouveau
  16. Would the city be responsible for maintaining public transportation infrastructure on a US route administered by ODOT?

Udine, picturesque city near the Slovenian border and the traditional capital of Friuli. First, a few pictures from Aquilea. This was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire in the 2nd century. It was largely destroyed by the Huns in the late empire. It’s thought the refugees from the surrounding area eventually founded Venice in the 7th century. Not much survives from antiquity, but the spectacular 4th century mosaic floors of the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta have been preserved. The basilica also has some remarkable 11th century frescoes On to Udine and the Piazza della Liberta. One of the most beautiful squares in a country comprised entirely of beautiful squares The main piazza, Giacomo Matteotti Around town Udine was ruled by Venice for 300+ years so you’ll see lots of the lion of Saint Mark

Hahaha lot of 7am photos in there. Early mornings are certainly not the strong suit of the Veronese.

I can never understand why that kind of great casual food is so common in places like Italy but almost completely lacking in the states. It seems like every other storefront is a bar serving espresso, beer and spritzes, decent bakery, and simple meals. It’s so wonderful

I love Milan. The history there runs deep like it does everywhere in Italy but the sites (excepting the Duomo) are much less touristed than elsewhere. You can go to places like San Lorenzo or San Ambrogio which both date to the 4th century and basically have the place to yourself. The Sforza Castle and park is also one of the best public spaces I’ve ever been in. Sitting on a hill there next to some medieval ruins sipping a Campari spritz from one of many spritz stands (lol) in the park while eating a picnic from Peck was one of the most pleasant experiences I’ve had. On top of that the public transportation is incredibly efficient. Trams and subways all over the place and everything runs every 4 minutes. It’s really such a great modern city.

Got to go to Italy twice last year which was pretty great. Figured I’d split the cities up into separate threads hopefully that is not annoying Bar Luce at the Fondazione Prada aka the Wes Anderson bar More Fondazione Prada Prada Casa showroom on Via Durini Versace Casa showroom on Via Durini Basilica di San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica di San Abrogio Castello Sforzesco Duomo Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Milano Centrale
  23. Yes lots of expats. But not entirely touristy. A pretty legit produce market and it’s also a weekend destination for CDMX people I believe
