  1. I'm heading to Cleveland next week for a show at Peabody's and was wondering where a decent place to stay is nearby. I haven't spent more than a few hours in Cleveland, so i really don't know the lay of the land. TIA.

no wonder they're so interested in counting hispanics in the census...we've gotta keep track of this sort of behavior. LATINO and only half of that number are Latino. You shouldn't be so subtle.

just started listening to some 8-bit stuff...fantastic. Anamanaguchi...unbelievable that people can make music from Nintendos.

I've always loved the East English Village and E. Outer Drive. My grandparents house is there and i have such fond memories. The housing there is largely intact and it will hopefully become an anchor for a new Detroit (not Delta City).

yeah, i imagine that most people will gladly pay a little more for some professionalism.

We're looking at hiring a painter for our house, we contacted a few painters and got a few quotes. When one of the guys came out he was talking about all sorts of things that were irrelevant to the job. I don't care that you steal DirecTV. I don't care that you've been married 3 times and now live on a house boat. But, the biggest annoyance was when he was telling me about some fried chicken joint he likes...this guy stops mid-sentence, looks me up and down and says "You're like me, you like to eat." Excuse me?

actors that don't act? Harrison Ford is the king of it.
  9. yeah, i could see it in the context of how we treat the history or culture. I don't think we need to try to be like New Orleans in terms of corruption, terrible schools or poverty.

This is why i avoid office parties as much as i can. the larger the group the more the likelihood that you will hear the same jokes approaches 1. Oh-ho-ho...you guys are trying to lose weight, but darn those cookies. Uh-oh...Bill is going for seconds. etc...etc. at my old job i'd typically stick my head in for whatever little talk our management would give and then go back to my desk without anything. I never understood how people that had a good lunch and snacked all day could become so ravenous when some sort of cake or muffins or cookies appeared.
  11. In what way would we want Cincinnati to be like New Orleans?

I hear this crap all the time. It's crazy how in this day and age i'll be talking to someone and as they describe a person to me they mention that the person is black...and they always do this in a whisper. Or if i am describing a phone conversation at work i'll be asked "did they sound black?" or something similar. heck, i hear all the time people talk about how "so and so got promoted because they're black." How do you know this? just because you don't think a person does their job well doesn't mean that they aren't qualified, or didn't interview well or whatever. Now, you can take this too far. If i'm at a party with my friends and i'm pointing out someone and it's a room of people in blue shirts i'm not going to try and use every descriptor to point out the one black guy across the room. I'm going to use the most obvious distinguishing feature. (note: this is hypothetical, it's not often that i find myself at parties full of white people and one black guy.)

I've got a coworker that needs to fill up every moment of every day with some sort of verbal diarrhea. Not only that, but she'll come over and eat while doing it. She'll stand in the opening of my cube and talk and eat and talk and eat. Eventually she'll throw out whatever it is into my garbage. Now, it's garbage, and it shouldn't bother me...but it does. I prefer to just throw on my headphones and zone out while doing work. I don't need to hear about everything she finds cute about her kid or how she feels slighted every day or whatever she wants to discuss that's horribly offensive.

I don't have an issue with the idea of cameras for red lights or speeding. However, i do think that they should be run by a public entity with a very transparent operation and a well defined appeals process. Unfortunately, they are typically maintained and operated by private companies that are incentivized to give out more tickets. I disagree with that type of use.
  15. The only good thing about comment sections in most dailys is that it allows me to feel so much better about myself. Of course, that doesn't happen reading the comments on papers like the New York Times. Those people are typically above my head. I agree with Mr. Gin. No comments should be allowed. Unfortunately, what random people say is becoming more and more important to the news regardless of how stupid those people are. I can't believe that they read tweets and emails on the air. I don't care what opinion Mr. Jacob Wisenheimer may have. It's not news.

i see it sort of like asking a woman if she's pregnant. Nope, nothing wrong with being pregnant, but it's probably best to keep your mouth shut because if she isn't there will be hell to pay.

^I'd say agreeing Glenn Beck is nearly a pretty good use of "drinking the kool-aid" but that's just me. lol. There are a lot of conservatives out there where i can get where they're coming from even if i don't agree with them. Beck? not so much.
  18. We're interested in (desperately need to) getting our house painted. We're going back to traditional craftsmen colors and our wood windows need some work. Anyone have any recommendations for painters in the area that might be up to the task? i've got one quote in, but i'm interested in getting a few others for comparison's sake. TIA.

Gorillaz hasn't really every had a change in line up, but Damon Albarn collaborates with different people. The first album he worked with Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Dan the Automator (two guys i like a lot) and then the second had producer Dangermouse and a bunch of other people being featured. I'm still absorbing this latest album. I really liked Demon Dayz. and i enjoy Stylo immensely. I'm sure it'll grow on me.

WVU fans? yeah, they were insulting and we didn't play them. And this isn't merely talking smack (i'm not that sensitive). I tend to believe in good sportsmanship and after a game decided by 2 points i'd expect more of a "whew...good game, could have gone either way" unfortunately it was more of the "you suck, get out of here, go home" etc. it goes to the adage: "act like you've been there before" <- loosely translated: "don't be an a-hole." It was clear which programs hadn't been there. Well, the scalper offered me 2.5x what they offered and he was lamenting that Butler won because (in his words) "these fools don't know what they're doing." I imagine the hotels were also lamenting as many of them cleared out since the Butler folks were all local.

Yeah, i was there. A final four with MSU in it and only 90 or so miles away from home? i'm there. Before the game we had very pleasant exchanges with most Butler fans (or perhaps i should say people from Indianapolis rooting for Butler) with a few exceptions (guys in the bar continuously trying to put the "shocker" into pictures taken by/of senior citizen MSU fans). It was in the immediate aftermath of the game when they were yelling at us and talking smack. many of my friends were really disappointed. Duke fans were the only ones saying things like "great run this year" and "Good luck, you'll be back next year" etc. It showed which fan bases were used to success and which ones were acting like immature idiots. I think the biggest insult was that the fans in the stadium coming up and asking us to sell them our championship game tickets for $20 a piece. face value was $360 for three games. If it's even for all three games and there is not championship game premium then that's $120 a ticket. I sold to a scalper for $50 a piece and i hope he makes 4x what he paid in profit on them.

Cinderella? really? a team ranked in the top 15 all year and a #5 seed? hardly a Cinderella. I was disappointed by the Butler fans. First class jerks. WVU fans as well...Duke fans (the team i typically dislike, although mostly because of their habit of winning) were really pretty cool. Said nice things and were all around decent. MSU was taken out of the game early by some pretty ticky-tacky fouls and were unable to play aggressively. Of course, they needed to hit more free throws in order to win that game (10 of 18? terrible). We watched most of the first half of the Duke/WVU game before heading home. the Duke fans were really out in numbers and were really into the game. WVU fans were pretty good too, but most of the stadium was for Butler and not as interested in the second game. They were more interested in low balling MSU fans on tickets and hurling insults.

I added a lot of R-value to our insulation a couple years ago after a nasty spell of high heating bills. I think we're going to add a couple wood burning stove inserts...a cord of wood will probably be cheaper than natural gas. Also, keep in mind, the PUCO has never seen a rate increase it didn't like.

my house is around 1900 sq ft. 1920s build, not great insulation...but a new furnace. $400-500 a month in the winter...and we keep the thermostat at 64 when we're there/awake and 57 when we're asleep/away.
