Boomers/Gen X/Millenials
If our airlines continue to consolidate and airfare continues to climb we may see some pull back from that.

Boomers/Gen X/Millenials
I think that i (and my other cousins of approximately the same age as me) fit in pretty well with our older cousins. The only one of my cousins that i don't get (out of about 25) is my youngest cousin who's about 18. I don't know if that's because he's a millenial or if it's a function of him buying into the Emo style or if it's because he's the youngest of the family (meaning we share the same grandmother...not that our family has mysteriously been unable to breed). Hell, it could be just because his folks are divorced and his Dad was one of the weirdest people i've ever met.

Boomers/Gen X/Millenials
i feel like that article is sort of a "no duh" type of thing. I mean, yeah...obviously seeing people lose value in their homes or get upside down and go into foreclosure is going to make younger people think twice about buying a home right away. It's like our grandparents being thrifty because they grew up in the Great Depression. Of course, other than that...those statements about the tendencies of Gen Y are pretty generic and feel like they were said before about Gen X. I'm not sure which i'm in (born 1979) but, i do think it's weird that my older cousins (late 60s) and my younger cousins (late 80s) are in two separate generations. Maybe we're a little quick on the label?

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Put their logos all over the cars and give them mega-PR/street cred ... :) That's exactly what I was thinking. Heck, they could plaster their name wherever they wanted for all I care. I love that idea. sincerely, Dick Jones, Executive, Omni Consumer Products

Deconcentrating Public Housing By Forcing it in Affluent Neighborhoods...Yes/No?
I don't think that people living in section 8 or public housing are actually responsible for the maintenance of the property. I imagine that would fall to the landlord just like in any other rental situation. One aspect that you don't address is that many people in this situation simply don't know how to take care of their property because they've never been in a position where they needed to.

Cincinnati: City Budget and Spending News & Discussion
Winburn unveils proposed budget cuts by Jane Prendergast December 14, 2009 i think my favorite part of this article is this quote from Charlie Winburn: “I don’t want to pat myself on the back,” Winburn said, “but every once in awhile you have to, I guess.” Yep, he's been on the job now for 9 or 10 days and he's congratulating himself? i guess that counts as every once in a while.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
recruiting? yes. signing dates? yes. could they implement sanctions on schools interviewing coaches that are under contract? maybe...but even if they could, they wouldn't. it's not in their interest. There is too much money to be made. Thinking about this more...i don't think the NCAA can put that restriction out there. I think the NFL could because they control pretty much all aspects of the games and what their employees can do. The Universities maintain a significant independence from the NCAA and i'm guessing that this extends to personnel issues.
-

yes. The NCAA does not have the ability to tell Universities how to handle employment issues.

What are you talking about? i understand you may be emotional about this, but you're not making a lot of sense. I'm seeing posts on this very page that are saying that the NCAA letting coaches be hired before the bowl games is a joke.

Weis is going to become the offensive coordinator somewhere in the NFL and make more millions of dollars. Probably be the highest paid assistant in the league. I don't think he's fallen that far.

Does it matter where you go to school?
^Okay, just wondering. I know that in some parts of the country there are serious issues with this (particularly in the Pacific NW) i just didn't think it was quite that way here. I don't really know many people that have college degrees that can't find good work. The few that work for those sorts of wages don't want to do what it would take to get a job that paid more (work 40 hours a week, work for someone, work in less than ideal conditions, taking drug tests, etc). So, i don't really count them as being unable to find work.

I'm curious...where do you get your stats on half of all college graduates (many with advanced degrees) working for $6-9 an hour?

I couldn't agree more. The current process is a joke and is an insult to the players and fans. i just went back to the beginning of this thread and took a look to see what you guys thought when Kelly was hired. Not a single peep about how UC shouldn't hire Kelly away from Central Michigan while he was under contract. Not a word. Oh, there was a lot of horrible things said about Mark Dantonio, but you were strangely silent on the contract issue, just as i'm sure you will be if UC hires a coach that is currently under contract somewhere else. December is much too important to recruiting (with signing day being in early February) for coaches to not get out there and do what they can to get their class together.

Does it matter where you go to school?
I think you'd have a tough time getting people to pay $10k a year to go to trade school so that they can have that atmosphere. A lot of people still don't go (or don't complete) college. I don't know how many of these trade jobs there are. A lot of those guys are susceptible to being laid off or having hours cut back. I know people that have done the route that you described and some have done very well (master plumbers, etc) and some haven't because of cutbacks and then after getting laid off they're having a tough time finding more work because they don't have a degree in a regular field. what vocations can we include here? electricians, plumbers, HVAC guys? I know there are others, but are there enough jobs in those areas?

a couple things: 1) Saban didn't leave LSU to go to Alabama, he left LSU to go to the Miami Dolphins and then went to Alabama after he washed out of the NFL. Saban DID leave Michigan State in an absolutely stunning move to go to LSU after the 1999 season. I was there, it sucked. 2) No school will ever seek to hold coaches to their contract because it will mean that they will never get a coach of any worth again. Include all the buyout clauses you can...but, do you think UC gave a damn about Kelly's contract with Central Michigan when they hired him? Not a chance. Unless they hire inside, they're unlikely to care about the next coach's contract with his current employer either.

well, by putting out all sorts of statements about being interested...that's pretty much an open declaration of love in the college football coaching world. Yeah...he isn't having a "formal interview" today but you can bet your @$$ that his representatives are in furious negotiations with ND about his contract. He won't have a formal interview until it's a done deal. Yeah, several guys declared...but Weis wasn't a terrible recruiter. Why might he go to ND? because of the money and the prestige that comes with it. ND will pay him way more than UC could hope to...nor should UC pay him as much as ND will.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
he's campaigned for the job pretty hard...and before he came to UC he stated that his two dream jobs would be ND and BC. The question is going to be does ND want him? Does he blow the interview? we'll have to see what happens. I do think that if he's not gone this year that the rumors are going to keep coming every year and believe me...that gets old real quick.

Does it matter where you go to school?
I'd say that it depends on the program that you're looking to go into. Some tier 4 schools have programs that are better than those available at tier 1 schools. It also doesn't really matter that much in professions with accreditation...like law, medicine, accounting, etc...if you can pass those exams and get through it you can get a job. Maybe you're not going to end up being the guy making $250,000 with a company car the first week out of school, but you'll be working. Of course, those career paths require advanced degrees (well, not accounting...but many accountants do get masters). I'd look into the program that you're interested in and try to figure out exactly how dedicated to that field you really are...a lot of people change their majors at some point. Also, don't worry as much about "worthless degrees" as a lot of people tell you...liberal arts degrees are worth it and you can find employment even if you graduate with a "worthless theatre degree"

Pet Peeves!
I wouldn't call someone by a name they didn't like unless i was friends with them and teasing them a little...but not on a regular basis.

Pet Peeves!
I don't trust people who don't go by the familiar version of their name with their friends...this is just a general statement...not a specific comment towards you, Mel. :-P In particular James and Andrew...those are two names that cry out for Jim and Andy. (maybe not professionally, but they just sound uptight otherwise)

3CDC is formed on the recommendation of the City, operates many sites that are owned by the City, receives relief in tax abatement from the city, etc. Don't worry, i don't dislike 3CDC and i think they're doing a great job in places like Fountain Square, OTR and Findlay Market...but i don't think that i'd call what they do the picture of "free market capitalism" or anything.
