Cincinnati: Downtown: 21c Hotel (Metropole Building Redevlopment)
This thing isn't really "free market" since 3CDC is a quasi-governmental non-profit group.

I'm not the Dean and i'm not trying to shut down debate. I do believe in due process that is applied equally across the board.

I would also suggest that how we treat the worst among us tells us a lot about what we value. I don't know any of these people or what they may or may not have done. Do you have any evidence to support your claim? As long as these people are treated fairly i don't have a problem with it...although i do agree with LincolnKennedy that maybe spreading development might be good.

Then the rehabilitation will be a great thing and the residents will all be better off being moved. That's a great end result. But how we get there does matter. The means tell us a lot about what we value...more so than the ends.

the enquirer articles go pretty far into depth about the HAP contracts.

Here's a link to the article where it says that under federal guidelines tenants are given one year to move.

incorrect about what part? the one year? that appears to be required.

i think it's interesting that the 1 year relocation timeline is considered generous in this thread when 3CDC is merely giving the amount of time required by law. I have a feeling that these "benefits" are merely what is required of them and probably have sunset provisions built in that will stop the benefits after a period of time.

Yes, these people should be thankful for 3CDC's largesse. I'm not here to argue, but i don't see how demonizing these people really helps when it's pretty easy to see why they might be pissed off.

presumably you are in a better position to find new accommodations and pay those fees. You also may have better access to transportation to get the places you need to go in the course of your day. Not to mention that you'd be pissed off too if that happened.

If the tenants really are close to work and services that they receive and have routines then being moved to East Walnut Hills could be an issue. I realize that this website is full of planning and developing people that are primarily interested in the redevelopment of the city. I applaud and appreciate that sentiment. I also tend to lean towards bleeding heart liberal and would like to see the development proceed with care towards these tenants. I hope 3cdc continues to treat them with respect and i hope these folks are moved to a location closer to where they are now than EWH. I have a feeling people might react differently if their grandmother was in that building.

Do we know where they are suggesting moving these people? Just because they are tenants in this building doesn't mean that they don't have rights. I'm not saying that the redevelopment should be blocked, but that it can be done in a way that works with these people...and maybe that's what they're doing with the one year and relocation assistance...but some old people can be very stuck in their ways and not want to be moved regardless of the situation. This could be an interesting fight.

People your city loves to hate.
"Haha, i saw your team lost last night" "No, my team won, i went to Michigan State" "whatever, i don't give a damn about the whole state of michigan...etc..." Yep...both states have stupid band-wagon fans. At least Michigan has a second university to split them up.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
You and i know the difference between operating and capital budgets...but when it comes to the tax payers and the council members that are looking for places to cut and justifications for doing so, i don't think they make the distinction quite as clear. Also, reading City Beat there's some rumors about Ghiz working to set herself up for a run at County Commissioner. So, she may be using this next year to position herself for the Republicans in the rest of the county.

We'll have to see what happens. Currently the city is facing a $51 million dollar deficit and while there are a lot of rail supporters on the council, the new majority has pledged not to lay off police and fire. If they hold true to that, they'll have to gut the rest of the budget which could delay this project for awhile. Also, Ghiz is not clear in her position, Winburn is probably with Monzel against it, and who knows if others will fall in the thinking of "good idea, wrong time" with all this stuff coming out.

People your city loves to hate.
Detroit: Ohio, William Clay Ford, Matty Moroun (owns the Bridge and a lot of the city), Woody Hayes (both because of the obvious UM rivalry and because he screwed MSU and got them on probation)... There are others that are extremely polarizing...Kwame Kilpatrick, Bo Schembechler (MSU fans and Tigers fans hate him), Coleman Young, L. Brooks Patterson, etc.

I'd favor this for most people. maybe on a three strikes basis...with everyone being able to give you a warning if you're being an asshat. three strikes within a week and you're off to boot camp.

Pet Peeves!
People in Ohio that tell me how much they hate Michigan after they find out i'm from there. Yes, i understand you don't like the University of Michigan because of the rivalry between two schools that you didn't attend. I'm not a fan of that school either, you see...i went to Michigan State University and no...it's not the same thing.

lol...yeah, but every one of them is. I believe that teenagers should all be sent away to an island (can we do temporary sterilization?) and left there from ages 13 to 19 until they can prove that they can be helpful members of society. They are so messed up in the head that they could reasonably plead insanity to just about anything that they do wrong.

The City also just elected a conservative/Republican council and we'll see if it's still blue enough to reelect Driehaus over Chabot in 2010. Issue 9 wasn't about democrat or republican. I think that both sides coming out strongly against it really helped defeat this measure.

i wouldn't go that far...we're not Blue by a long shot. In fact, i'm amazed that 9 went down like it did.

Cincinnati: Downtown: National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
I feel like if they springboard off of the installation of the piece of the Berlin Wall and use it to stage exhibits of all sorts of freedom from various oppressions then they will do better. Of course, this is a very different and very necessary museum. Of course it's not going to do as much business as an art museum because it is slapping us in the face with the ugliness of humanity. It shows us what atrocities we are capable of but also shows how the human spirit can overcome all odds. It's a lot nicer to go look at a few Monets than to see real horror. Can we really say which one is more important?

But Dan Gilbert isn't even in Cleveland. (i'm just kidding...i know he invests a lot in Cleveland even though his primary business is in SE Michigan...i hope he continues with plans to invest heavily in Detroit, too.)
