  1. A more conservative democrat doesn't bother me. Luken does. It doesn't need to be someone I really like like Greg Harris, it could be a blue dog dem like Driehaus.

How have democrats in Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin managed to screw up this election cycle so badly? They've managed to find John Kerry level candidates to run terrible campaigns, guaranteeing very vulnerable Republicans reelection.
  3. I'd agree with you on large national or statewide races (I have never really supported truly progressive candidates because they can't win) but not for lower level races like this. Luken is a coast too far.
  4. what do you gain in Luken? A conservative democrat more than willing to jump in bed with COAST? Where do I send my money?
  5. I'd never support Luken. I see no improvement over Monzel with him. I think a lot of progressives would feel the same way and he'd lose.
  6. Agree that all the leaders of the county seems should go, but enough with Tarbell. Ib like the guy, but I don't think he should run anything. Qualls, maybe. I like her a lot. Still, getting someone that organizes effectively would be great, and her campaign didn't show that. They need to tap into the new progressive movement to get people excited about the dems and voting.
  7. That's the fault of the County Dems for not backing anyone in the race, or for not supporting him since the primary. I don't expect much from the county dems. They are awful.
  8. now I see some talk of Tarbell, Charlie Luken or Landsman running. I'd support 2 of the 3. But at the same time, why should Feeney drop out? At least he stepped up in the primary. The democrats are terrible here and don't deserve the seat if they don't want to do the work from start to finish. I think Landsman should run, but I don't know if he'll win.

Even if we do move back, we'll probably have to go to the west side of the state, and into a more suburban/almost rural area in order to cut down on commuting between two cities.
  10. I would love to know how cutting the City's planned contribution to the pension plan by 10 percentage points makes it more sustainable.

My wife lost one sister a few years ago, and it was very tough to be far away. Her other sister lives on the same street as her parents. That might be a little too close, but they never miss anything in her niece and nephew's lives. My brother lives in Oregon and I never see his 2 kids. I miss them, but there really isn't anything I can do, and they like the distance from my folks. He's been on the west coast for 15+ years. So, it's basically me for my mom and dad. They don't need me yet, but I don't want to wait until they do.

I'm torn. Cincinnati is where I moved to be with my now wife, we recently had a kid and we love the daycare, we bought a house in Pleasant Ridge and have dived into the community and live to be involved. Still, we feel the incredible pull to move back home to Michigan. As much as this city has given us, I've never really called it home, and yet, I know it better than where I grew up. We're so far from our families and I worry about our parents health all the time. My dad's dad died when I was 5. I don't remember him, and I'd hate to have the same thing with my son and my dad. Particularly since we aren't living around the corner.
  13. Page 1-4 of the budget proposal says they're using $3M in casino revenue for "balance purposes." Page 1-9 says "this recommended FY2015 budget update includes the transfer of funding for some of the Focus52 projects to the general capital budget to provide the non-tax revenue in the general fund. The condition of the general fund simply does not allow for transferring resources to support capital projects..." Edit: fixed a random superscript.
  14. He's taking $100M from the retiree health plan, moving it onto the pension, and decreasing the % contributed by the city from the 24% promised to 14%. That saves more than $7M but the transfer seems like a one time fix to me. Also, cutting $3M from Focus52. I wonder what projects are getting cut.
  15. I don't expect that it will change after he's made permanent after a paper search for a new manager costing a few hundred thousand dollars. The Mayor/Manager roles are so screwed up that it lets the Mayor sort of decide how involved he'll be.
  16. I hardly think that there will be a different permanent manager besides Stiles. The Mayor chooses the manager and council approves. Council has said nothing but good things about Stiles and Cranley has 5 votes, easily.
  17. I don't know if you guys look at FYI memos to council, but on the council's website you can go to council online. If you click the FYI Memos and then leave the search criteria blank, you can get a list in reverse chronological order. The most recent one lays out the city's strategy. It's not something I've seen reported anywhere, and therefore can't have been Cranley's idea.
  18. Sorry, that's what I meant, I just put it inarticulately. She added it to the list of buildings removed. Couldn't be clearer if I tried.
  19. I had no idea that Lytle Park needed to have redevelopment sparked. I think the city should give WS some grants to fix up some of those dilapidated buildings. And that hideous park with those horrible regular people walking around, when can we fix that and install some gates?
  20. I don't see any point in fighting WS on this. If Cincy wins the Republican Convention then Barrett will be needed to raise the money that the RNC wants. Heck, any decisions on things WS wants until the convention city is announced are all going to go how JB wants. Oh, and the Business Courior reported that Amy Murray included the University Club now. Did I read that right?
  21. But the City's communications manager is still in place working for the city manager. This is a second role, doing god knows what. Maybe keeping Kincaid out of trouble?
  22. No. That's tomorrow.
  23. ^^sorry. You're right. I've just been thinking about the idea that council doesn't need to pass a cancelation ordinance (they probably will).
  24. I doubt council would allow a breach. They'll vote to cancel if the feds take the money.
  25. You are missing the fact that it is $68 million ADDITIONAL to complete, whereas the $50-$80 million factors in the $34 already spent. You are right on everything else. Don't forget that the $16M (low end) comes from operating funds.
