Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
yeah, i don't know how they came up with this data. I mean, it seems like they took the number of crimes and divided by the population. well, the population in that neighborhood is relatively small (especially since the cut off the East side of Vine Street and the work there) compared to the number of people that pass through the neighborhood. So, if you were to compare the actual number of people passing through to the crime the rate would be much less than 1 in 4. This sort of "study" is such a quick and dirty way of making headlines and getting all the "haters" riled up about how dangerous the inner city really is. PS...isn't OTR as a neighborhood bigger than that? or does it really terminate at Vine St?

Cincinnati City Council
Personally, i think that the best way to do this is to prevent the appointee from running in the next election. This is the best solution, if i do say so myself.

More Efficient Local Governments
Sure, Louisville and Lexington...Charlotte/Mecklenburg and others have this style of metro government...but would that fly in Ohio with the tradition of home rule? that seems to be such an emphasis here that i don't know if people would give it up. besides, here in Cincy it seems like the suburbs hate the city and the city doesn't really get along with the 'burbs.

Ohio: Residency Rule Requirement
Okay, so now cities can't require employees to live within city limits as a condition of employment. Cincinnati doesn't require that, they require employees to be in the County. that's now out, right? does that mean employees can live in Kentucky? From what i understand, the rule in Cincinnati was that managers were required to live in the city limits. Could the city continue that requirement as a condition of the position, but not as a condition of employment? like, they wouldn't fire you if you moved, but may demote you?

Does Ohio have the worst ex-pats?
And for that they should be shamed. i'm for anything that allows you to "compete" and drink at the same time.

When was your dwelling built?
1922 i love that most of the original work is there, the only issue is trying to find wood to match up with the original 2x4 and 2x6

Does Ohio have the worst ex-pats?
but what makes Toledo a more viable community than Detroit? i know that a huge issue in Detroit was the number of people from the south that moved up to take the jobs in the plants that required little education during and following the war. With them came the racial tension that makes the Detroit area one of the most segregated communities in the country, even today. How did the Ohio communities avoid this? (i guess my experience is more Cincinnati and Toledo) Did white flight occur here to some extent? One thing i've noticed about Cincinnati ex-pats...they've brought cornhole around the country. seems like people i talk to on both coasts now know it and play. (although we're all a little more squeamish on the name)

Isn't that how it is in Hamilton, ON? so many fans of Buffalo there? Does anyone really care what Youngstown thinks?

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
anything at all going on with the Kennedy Connector? I wish that Kroger was still in PRidge. I'd love to just walk to the grocery store. Aldi and Meijer are just out of walking distance.

I can see that.

Does Ohio have the worst ex-pats?
I think we all have a soft spot for where we grew up. Mine is right behind my frontal lobe, just east of the hypothalamus. Yeah, i think that that's true, that we all have a soft spot...and it's true that being in Ohio most people here will be more sensitive to the comments that are made about Ohio whether they're by Ohio ex-pats or not. I know that people on the west side of Michigan have little love for the east side and people from the east side thing that westsiders are all a bunch of Dutch hicks (and they'd be right). Another thing about Michigan ex-pats...if they're from the west side of the state (specifically Kalamazoo and the surrounding area) they're much more drawn to Chicago than Detroit. I don't think that happens in Ohio.

Does Ohio have the worst ex-pats?
well, most states have something that they're proud of. In Michigan people are proud of Detroit (toughness, grit, determination, blue collar, etc), they're proud of the lakes and all the wildlife and outdoors stuff that there is to do, on the west side of the state they're proud of being Dutch (i think). Here in Ohio it seems that people are defined by their cities. i don't know why that is, but that's what i've seen. And there are great things about the cities that people don't know about until they're there, so it's unlikely that people from the East Coast would ever know about them. Maybe Ohio does have the worst Ex-pats because no one considers themselves an Ohioan.

Does Ohio have the worst ex-pats?
I'm a Michigan Ex-pat and so are a lot of my friends (obviously since it doesn't seem there are many left up there) but there isn't a person that left up there that wouldn't go back if they could. I'd say that at least 95% of the people i know from there love it and if they could find a job they'd be back. I do know that Martin Sheen used a UD mug on The West Wing a bit. I know Jeff Daniels is a huge Michigan booster and is in a lot of the economic development commercials for the state. Does Ohio struggle because of the fight between the major cities for dominance?

The Dating Thread
I don't think the issue is honesty. maybe you're talking about naivety? I've never been one for games or any of that crap. If i like you, i'll call you. But, just like anyone, women don't need guys to be there all the time or give off the vibe that they're creepy stalker-like people. Be social and honest to a point. i don't know about all that "don't wait for the girl to get out of the bathroom" thing...that seems a little lame. But, i've never read "the game" and don't intend to. of course, i'm married...hopefully for awhile.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
Metric is really awesome. i ordered their new album, (it included immediate download and a vinyl copy) and it's really good. the vinyl hasn't come yet, some issues with the economy and the pressing company. Emily Haines is just fantastic. luckily my wife does not see her as competition. not sure why. I understand Radiohead is back in studio. Can't wait to see what they come out with next.

Not Even Tornadoes Will Go to Downtown Cincinnati?
I'm sure there are some features like this, but my wife set it up and she was out of town all weekend. Last night the damn thing went off because of a flood warning in Pendleton or something. I don't know if you can set it just to go off for specific counties or if you can set it up to just ring for certain types of warnings in specific counties. I really have no idea. there seems to be a pretty big concern about weather down here. is it entirely justified?

Not Even Tornadoes Will Go to Downtown Cincinnati?
If that happens, i promise i won't complain.

Not Even Tornadoes Will Go to Downtown Cincinnati?
If there was any real danger? yeah, i would have appreciated it. If i was out in Russellville or something it might have meant something. But, there really was no danger in the metro-Cincy area and there wasn't even any damage in Russellville or wherever the "tornadoes" may have hit. (tornadoes is in quotes because i'm not sure if they were certified as tornadoes or not)

Not Even Tornadoes Will Go to Downtown Cincinnati?
true, but don't you think there is a siren fatigue danger? i mean, i don't pay them much attention anymore and i've only been exposed to them for a couple years. back home they only turn on the sirens if the **** is about to hit the fan. Heck, i got one of those weather radios and the damn thing went off every 10 minutes last Saturday because of warnings in every part of the metro area except mine. Eventually i just turned it off.

Not Even Tornadoes Will Go to Downtown Cincinnati?
So, was there any damage at all?

It's Amazing How History Repeats Itself...
and that was an attempted repeat of what happened in the 1980s. it really hasn't been an ongoing thing. i started at MSU in '97 and lived in the Lansing/EL area through '06. what happened in 2007 was what they call in hollywood a "re-imagining" and not a very good one.

My Personal Credit Crisis
I've known people to have many difficulties making reservations with cash. in some cases the only way to do so was with a credit card.

America and Genocide
I know some people don't like the idea of revisionist history ( what history isn't revisionist?) but whether or not the intent was wrapped in religious context or whatever doesn't really change the outcome. it seems to me that the intent was there. We know better than them, we need to take this from them. We'll kill them if we need to in order to spread out and control this country. Aren't many genocides wrapped in religious context?
