Cincinnati City Council
Technology limitations, I apologize for a short response. Why do more frequent elections cause more progressivism? Populism, yes. But as is seen from the tea party, Populism is no guarantee for progressive ideas.

Cincinnati City Council
Because the world exists outside of the Streetcar. The budget has real concerns and answers need to be found outside of just "no cuts to safety departments." The no cuts to safety pledge is essentially the Grover Norquist pledge, and the 4 year term was meant to be a buffer, at least in part. Blaming me for supporting that, isn't going to change anything. Don't discount the effect of the emotional comparisons between household budgets and the city.

Cincinnati City Council
Personal attacks. Great. Maybe this board can be like an election. Money isn't what I'm talking about, it's more about influence. The police and fire unions talked and pushed the idea that council people wanted to cut safety, and that would result in deaths. That doesn't take a ton of money. Council fears looking weak on those issues, after all, Police and fire are our heroes! Look how much they sacrifice! So, yeah, that's all a big deal. Look at Winburn's campaign. I would suggest lobbying Mann and Sittenfeld, and trying to make the best of this.

Cincinnati City Council
PAlexander, I am using my phone, so this won't be long. When that was put forth by one of the most progressive Democrats around here, it was to get away from the influence of groups like the police and fire unions (not progressive at all) and allow people to vote for real budget changes without fear of a huge money bomb being dropped against you. The election didn't go the way I hoped, and we now have the leadership of NO running our town, but if it had gone the other way, I certainly wouldn't be complaining, and neither would you.

4 year terms are a good idea to get away from the constant cycle of elections. Just because the folks I like lost, it doesn't mean I want more elections. Nothing gets done when everyone is campaigning.

Cincinnati: Mayor John Cranley
Is this the new normal? I can see think tanks and national groups getting somewhat involved to push an agenda, but soliciting funds from regular Joes for a mayoral race? That doesn't make sense. Then again, raising $1M for a council seat doesn't make sense to me either.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
^^Because Detroit hasn't been the whipping boy of the country for decades? What's that slogan? Cleveland, at least it's not Detroit? Personally I think Detroit and Cleveland should look at each other as brothers in arms. They are very similar, particularly if you count the rise and fall of our football teams.

Cincinnati: Mayor John Cranley
I just received this forward from a friend up in Michigan. Why would Cranley be soliciting funds from Flint, MI? I apologize if the formatting is all messed up, I'm on mobile. Dear Friends, One of the most exciting aspects of my job as Flint mayor is working with other local elected officials who are coming up with innovative solutions and tackling tough problems in their home communities. I guess I feel a special kinship with other leaders who are committed to service despite all the pressures, criticisms and sacrifices that come with this line of work. This is why I have to tell you about what my good friend John Cranley is doing in Cincinnati. John is one of the reasons I sought an elected position myself. I saw him put himself on the line in a challenging congressional race back in 2000 in which he came up short, but instead of stopping there he ran successfully for a Cincinnati City Council seat. John was a strong leader who focused on jobs, safety, neighborhoods and youth. I learned a good deal from his experience in local government before I made my own run for Flint mayor. Now, John is running for Cincinnati mayor in an open non-partisan primary since the incumbent is term-limited. John has a powerful platform that addresses economic development, equity, and inclusion. I know he would guide Cincinnati, one of the great American cities, to greater prosperity. John’s election is less than a month away and early voting has already started. I wanted to send this note out so that you have the opportunity to join me in showing support. The website is www.johncranley.com. You can give online, register to get campaign updates, and read up on his plan. Please make a contribution and help John advance to the general election. He is working on putting together his final media push so every dollar counts. Go to www.johncranley.com and you will be inspired by what he is doing to create opportunities for the next generation of Cincinnati’s kids. Please give whatever you can.

Cincinnati: Help me find a venue for charity event
I think Northside Tavern would be a great place for a competition, and it's one of my favorite bars in the city, my only fear is that with folks coming in from out of town (and we will have a good number) it's a bit far from hotels. Downtown/OTR really fits perfectly and shows off the city in a way that Northside doesn't.

Cincinnati: Help me find a venue for charity event
Whoops, I wasn't clear...my issue is that they shut it down and now only open once in awhile. I imagine they'd want a profit for opening it up for a day. Still, it's worth looking into.

I'm not familiar with the jail ally. It sounds like a place I would want to check out.

Cincinnati: Help me find a venue for charity event
Damn, Venue 222 charges a lot of money for a space. I love bockfest hall, maybe we can work something out there. Or Grammers would be awesome, although I'm not keen on them shutting the place down. I thought about Arnold's or Neon's (even though I hate their bathroom situation). We're quite new as an organization and all the money for this either has to be raised over the next few months or comes out of pocket, so the cheaper the better. Unlikely, I know.

Cincinnati: Help me find a venue for charity event
Typically this sort of event is an evening/night thing and some of our members have talked to Japp's before about it. We would have to hold it as a closed/ticketed event and let the owner take whatever comes frown the bar. Is there anything going on with the Hanke building? And does the Emery have events? Their webpage is pretty out of date, but I was there for MPMF. Edit: typos...on my phone.

Cincinnati: Help me find a venue for charity event
I'm working to throw a decently sized charity event in October of this year and I need some suggestions/help finding a venue (hopefully in the CBD or OTR). It's a beard competition where the proceeds will go to a yet-undecided charity (but yes, all proceeds my group makes from the event will go there). If you haven't been to a beard event before, they're fantastic and you should go (there's one in Cleveland on April 6th if you're interested) and almost all of them are for charity. I'm hoping to draw around 250 people and we'll need booze available. Originally i was thinking about the Know Theater, but they're booked for Saturdays in early October. Any ideas?

Columbus: Festivals, Music Concerts, & Events
I'm not sure if this is the right thing for this, but here's an event that should get a ton of exposure in Columbus in 2 weeks. http://www.beardteamohio.com/beardcon/ BeardCon is going to be awesome. If you saw anything about the Beards of Science event last year at CoSI, then you should know that this event is the sequel to that great time. Any questions you may have, i'll endeavor to answer.

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
This would be horrible...why does Walgreen's insist on doing this throughout the country? The only things I've ever seen move into empty drug stores are those temporary Halloween USA/Christmas stores and Dollar Stores. Who do we need to contact to help stop this? They want visibility that the corner would bring. The Community Council and the Pleasant Ridge Development Corporation are looking into what can be done. They've asked residents to send emails to [email protected]. The VFW might be voting tomorrow (5/31) on the proposal to sell. They're struggling with membership, but it would be terrible to lose them just to gain a Walgreen's. If they want more parking and more people driving by, i think they'd be better served buying the old/new bank in the former K-Mart parking lot.

WLWT is reporting about 9 serious injuries. Let's hope they come out of this alright. I drove past it either right before or right after.

I'm so disappointed to see that the Detroit M1 Rail line is getting replaced by busses. I'm disappointed in the Secretary of Transportation and Mayor Bing. I'm also disappointed in the person I saw driving a BMW this morning with the license plate PWR HGRY.

That's where I parked, I just think paying $50 to park for the weekend is a little absurd when the garage is empty. We walked the area and cabbed to the short north.

The competition was awesome. It was really well put together at COSI. I also discovered one of my favorite bars of all time in the Ringside Cafe on Pearl. It was great.we beardos sort of took it over Friday night but it was a great little place with decent food. The only other thing is that the old old post office is a really cool building...oh, and parking sucks over near the Capitol where we stayed.

Penn State Scandal
Paterno had to go. McQuery and the rest of the staff will be gone at the end of the season and will never coach anywhere again. I think everyone needs to go. It's shocking that anyone could have heard the allegations and not called the police. Basically they told Sandusky that he'd better not bring any more kids around the locker rooms and that was it. Wow. The law exists because it tells us the bare minimum of what we have to do in society. Merely meeting that hurdle is not something to crow about. Paterno needed to go to the police with what he heard. The Grad assistant that saw it (McQuery) should have gone to the police, if anything to admit to killing a man that was raping a 10 year old boy in the showers. But, none of that happened.

I'm heading to Columbus this weekend for the 2nd annual Ohio Beard and Moustache Championships being held at COSI. I had a blast last year at the event in Dayton. These guys really know how to put on a good time. All proceeds from the event benefit the fight against prostate cancer.

into my 4th day with a new car and all's good so far. I was sad to see my old car go. It was good to me over 9 years and we took it camping for our honeymoon. Still, it was time. i just hope the dealership gets double what they paid me in trade-in.
