My favorite is the hazy Euclid Avenue shot. That is a classic city street scene! Reminds of NYC, but better because it's Cleveland!!

Wow!! Love the black and white! Definitely gritty!

I just have to add to his particular topic. I read the above linked article and watched the attached videos. Incredible! I loved the videos! And I agree with all the comments above regarding marketing the city. I particularly agree with Burnham_2011. I too live outside of NE Ohio for the time being. I am living in Charlotte, one of the so-called 'up-and-coming' cities. One thing is for sure, it does not have the assets Cleveland does. Don't get me wrong. It's a nice city, but it has no character. No culture. It has no E 4th Street or W 6th Street. It has no theater district. It's downtown is small and compact. 95% of the buildings are new skyscrapers. Charlotte saw no need to preserve its historical buildings. I could go on and on but I'll spare everyone any further obvious bias I have regarding how great Cleveland is. One thing is certain - Cleveland has so much going for it. It has so many things other cities and regions wish they had. I'm glad to see the DCA is using these assets in it's marketing campaign. Like Burnham_2011, I promote Cleveland to everyone down here. I'm one of those relentless 'nothing is better than Cleveland' boasters. (All my friends down here hate me for that!!!!) I can't help it. Cleveland is in my heart, and will be, forever. It is my home and a place I can truly say I love. (Sorry for the mush!)
  4. I think TC is an awesome place myself. The Casino will add tons of life to that area of downtown that will spill over into TC. More traffic could mean more variety of retail. I'm sure the Casino and a soon-to-be (hopefully) recovering housing market will also spur new residential development like the stalled Courthouse Plaza near the new Fed CH.
  5. Here's an article detailing the results of the meeting this past Tuesday of local architects, landscape architects, and planners brainstorming on the future of downtown: http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/12/downtown_planners_brainstorm_i.html
  6. Absolutely loved that article linked by tradition7. I emailed it to all my non-Cleveland friends who don't understand the passion we Clevelanders have for our sports teams and the city as a whole.
  7. I am living, for now, in Charlotte. I can tell you that you get what you pay for with CATS (Charlotte Area Transit System). The Lynx line is the only light rail line in Charlotte. It is inconveniently located to most of the population in Charlotte and ends in Uptown Charlotte. The Lynx system is not free at any time (at east I believe)although you wouldn't know that from the fare jumpers. Just now CATS has started to do ticket checks with $50 fines being handed out at the officers discretion. There were plans to extend this line out to UNCC but budget problems have forced the system to scale it back or axe it altogether. The bus system is limited, especially in South Charlotte. Like most transit systems in the US since the great recession, CATS has cut back it's bus routes and schedules. Charlotte has a trolley (actually a bus fashioned as a trolley called the Gold Rush) that runs free Uptown during the week. Personally, RTA is a better system than what is in place in Charlotte. I know it has it's problems. I've rode very recently from Hopkins to Downtown. I experienced those problems first hand (fare jumpers, no indication the Waterfront line doesn't run during the week, old, nasty Red Line trains, etc) but, believe me, it's a better system than CATS! You can't even get to the airport via train in Charlotte!! You have to take buses.
  8. Great link! Plus it gives you the opportunity to give your input on the design choices.
  9. Do I sense sarcasm in this statement??? The PD not printing an article that's positive in tone about Cleveland??? No!?!?!?! Btw, that is super news!!
  10. This is my first attempt at a new topic so please forgive me if I placed it under the wrong discussion or if someone else has already used this story. (I debated where to put it: City Dicussions or Sports Talk. Could go either way.) I thought this article at gcbl.org was so interesting that I had to link it. Here's a snippet: "What follows is a description of the relationship between a city and its sports, with the intent to show how this relationship is affected by a region's identity, as well as the ways we go about the process of city-building." And here's the link: http://www.gcbl.org/blog/richey-piiparinen/history-city-and-its-sports-or-creation-prodigal-son

    Very cool video!
  12. Here's the latest on the crackdown on juvenile fare offenders: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/11/post_400.html
  13. I'm not a huge fan of the location. I think a Lake front location fits with the idea of tourism, etc. BUT, hey, I'll take an aquarium just about anywhere downtown at this point! It's been way too long!!
  14. I'm wondering what the long-term effects of CAK siphoning business from Hopkins will be on our hub status. CAK actively advertises against Hopkins (whether directly or indirectly) even though they will flatly deny it. Competition and a free-market economy is vital, of course. But I just hope that the folks in charge of CAK understand that maintaining a hub at Hopkins is vital not only for Cleveland but also for Akron, Canton, and all of NE Ohio.
  15. Just looked at the rest of your additions and they are stunning!
  16. Here's an interesting article regarding future changes to hopkins. http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/future-hopkins-plan-displayed-discussed
  17. Yes, why give Pittsburgh business anyway at the expense of our hub? True we don't have any transatlantic flights but, for the sake of keeping our hub, maybe connecting to NYC or elsewhere would be better for Cleveland as a whole.

Every morning for me too. I don't like to smell like 'bed' all day long. Shower before bed only if I've worked out prior or been outside doing dirty stuff.
  19. It seems there is a lot of positive energy and optimism in Cleveland right now. There are several major downtown projects just about to begin and more awareness than ever about the problems that need to be overcome in this town. It also seems there are some concrete ideas on a way out of the mess our region has been in for the last several decades if not more. Will they work? Time will tell. But Cleveland is a survivor and she will survive. This is just a small reason why I'm a Clevelover!!
  20. Let's just get shovels in the ground on this one!! It has been far too long of a wait.
  21. I believe they converted a former office tower into a residential tower in the Dallas/Ft Worth area by removing the entire skin of the old building and radding balconies.
  22. archangel - I believe Key is leaving the Key Bank Center due to consolidation efforts and they are taking up residence in the old Higbee Building. See link below. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/08/keycorps_flexible_new_space_in.html
  23. Ok, here's my issue. Just to qualify this issue - I'm sure it's something very simple and easy and that I have overlooked. I am trying to create a new topic and post some pictures in that new topic. I do everything you're supposed to do and it starts loading my pictures. When it is done I am told that my session timed out while trying to post my topic. I am logged in, of course, while posting and I am logged in for 100 minutes. I am nowhere near that time time limit while posting. What am I doing wrong?
  24. Why aren't there turnstiles, where it is possible to have them? There has to be a way to have a physical barrier that you have to pass through to get on the train. I know at Tower City they have them. Is it possible to have them at other stations? or does every station have this type of thing? (I haven't checked every station out on the Rapid system!) Also, what about RTA police on all trains checking each passenger for a ticket? Is this the 'proof of purchase' policy mentioned above? Charlotte has one train in their transit system and they have no turnstiles. However, after each stop there is a transit policeman or representative that checks each passenger for a ticket. They can either issue a warning or a $50 fine if you don't have a ticket on you. There doesn't seem to be the worry or outcry about targeting certain members of the population with this policy. Letting people on buses without paying seems as if it would be up to the bus driver. A check for that would be a camera monitoring the driver. May seem big-brotherish but if the system loses as much money as they do due to non-fare payers, I think video surveillance is fair game.
  25. Niko, I feel the same way! That is such an under utilized rapid line with so much future potential. Speaking of which: I was looking at the freshwatercleveland.com site and it had a link to the Waterfront development plan by the City and others. It showed the WFL headed east, well east. I just glanced at it and didn't study it but it traveled pretty far eastward. Ahhh, maybe one day it will happen!
