  1. I note Stan Bullard refers to the Brinck project as "Ohio City." Is it west of Columbus Road?
  2. The west side of the building has been painted a sleek black - seems imho a little too sophisticated for a boxing establishment. Sure wish they'd break ground for that new apartment complex between W. 28th and W. 29th, which includes the eleven-story tower. I hope they don't let the whole summer go - let alone entire year - without at least breaking ground! :-(
  3. As for the building catty-corner to Spaces, I believe a workman told me it's going to be yet another beer place - perhaps a brewery.
  4. I thought I've been kerping up with projects around town, but I drove down Euclid today and allof a sudden I came across a 3-4-story building going up justeast of E. 57th, where I hadn't noticed construction at all in recent months. And also sizable construction job on Euclid between E. 55th and E. 57th. I've been reading about some project proposals around there but I thought they were where I had been seeing the steel frame assembled, between Euclid and Chester, and the the vintage brick bldg. bear there being remodeled. In any case, this Euclid and E. 57th seems to be going up awfulky fast!
  5. Yes, Byrd was a famous U.S. politician nationally. If someone wants to know something about someone a street is named after, it's extremely easy to look them up on the Web, unless they have a very common name. Even so, one can probably find them by plugging in a city, or whatever you think of that might narrow the options. Anyway, it might be worth more particularly when a name has been forgotten by the general public. the person was known forcsomething positive in his or her time, and maybe people should learn about that person again.
  6. How odd. Looks like the furniture bldg. had windows of ca. 1910 style, and the current plan is to make the bldg. look Victorian and fill in the vacant lot to the east with an imitation Victorian extension? And then a contemporary appendage set onto the roof - a penthouse?
  7. Yes, I try hard to not get attached to preliminary drawings and images at least until official construction, and even then it might be premature. Hence I avoid charettes and other pie-in-the-sky-type discussuons or lengthy descriptions of student design projects.
  8. Slightly off topic, but the other day, when heading toward Aurora Premium Outlets on 306, I was taken aback when coming across a group of new detatched houses on the west side of 306 also with a long row of rear elevations facing 306. There was a wall placed such the road would be screened off for the homeowners, but nothing enabling all the drivers on 306 to avoid this mass visual pollution!
  9. The pattern of most cities throughout history has been the wealthy would live near the center, with the others away from it.
  10. Imagine if Franklin Circle actually became a circle again....
  11. I don't recall; is it to be apartments or hotel, or both? All decent hotels today seem to have canopies or portes-cocheres of some sort.
  12. renovation, addition. hotel. Good. Now let's get going with it please, though I'd like to see new, well designed fill-in on the west side of West 25th.
  13. Thanks for rhe response. It's funny how some say MLK Drive (as street signs do) yet many call it "Boulevard" (the Cleveland pattern). I recall now many were not happy about dropping the "Liberty" name - on account of what it was named for originly. The original bame was "Lower Boulevard" (or was it "Drive?").
  14. I've never gotten an answer to this. Does anyone know the situation when the Greenway crosses Liberty Boulevard? I assume no pedestrian bridge is planned, because I have never seen it mentioned, but is there to be a traffic light or nothing? The light would be unpopular with all the fast drivers on the Boulevard, and it would be unexpected and be considered a nuisance and probably it wouldn't involve that many pedestrians on an average day. On the other hand, it seems strange that a Greenway that's supposed to attract the public and pedestrians would expect everyone to walk far away just to get from one side of the Greenway to the other. Even a crosswalk with the bold "crossing" signs and no traffic light could be very hazardous for any pedestrian to depend on - with the way many drive there.
  15. Just a few scattered remarks related to some recent posts here: I don't think we should say the Avenue of Tower City is a commercial "failure." It's a failure as a shopping destination for high-end shops but not in total. What on earth is the difference between "clothing" and "apparel?' I was excited to find J3, the Moreland Hills upscale menswear shop was opening an outlet in the Arcade - good for downtown, good for downtown workers and residents, good for the Arcade. I'd sure like to see more customers, though. I hope management doesn't give up on it and, somehow, business expands. There are several other clothing stores in Tower City that weren't mentioned. You might not like the style, but they're certainly clothing stores. There are also other clothing stores downtown not mentioned - one in the Arcade, another on Euclid, one on East Fourth, one on West Ninth, several boutiques in Fifth Street Arcades. Plus the team shops, etc. And let's not forget Joseph Scafidi - a really high quality, almost Saville-Row style shop in Penton Plaza facing the minipark. It had been in the Huntington Building*whatever it's called now) for decades. When I came here in 1973 one could buy a shirt downtown in maybe 20 stores, including three major department stores and six five-and-tens. Ample retail is the last component to come to downtown Cleveland, which has positively reinvented itself in so many other ways.
  16. There were a few posts here regarding several "broken" street lights on the Hope Memorial Bridge. I saw the other day all the globes (or whatever they're called) on the "historic" fixtures have been removed, with the wires exposed. Wonder what they'll be replaced with.
  17. Crosswalks over the streets? Any bridges being considered?
  18. I'm quite sure I've seen Ohio City street signs west of West 48th and south if Franklin, like perhaps on Lorain?
  19. I suppose this has come up before, but a little survey: How do you guys define the borders of Ohio City? There's the early-19th century village, the Cleveland Historic Districts, etc. I recall in the 1970s articles consistently referred to West 45th Street as the western border, and Monroe Avenue as the southern border, or perhaps including the Fulton Road Cemetery. Or it could have been the highway just to the south. Some considered Ohio City to go all the way up to the lake, though I don't know that people ever really considered Lakeview Terrace to be in the Ohio City. As to the river to the east, there's sort of a disagreement as to if Duck Island is in Ohio City or Tremont, though Tremont appears to be winning. I'm now seeing streets in the West 50s included. I know the Ohio City ornament to street signs goes to around there. If West 54th is to be considered actually in Ohio City then, indeed, Ohio City would literally border Gordon Square, which could easily be said to extend east to West 54th. ditto Detroit Shoreway. :|
  20. I note the West 47th block isn't much architecturally, but there are several "urban gardens" there.(
  21. You may be right, though it's also "RVE Investments." There's one in Texas, too, or it's the same one.
  22. I smell demolition in the air....
  23. RVE Investments is a company headquartered in California.
