  1. Please explain what you mean by the "design element" is coming along nicely." You've seen the latest plans? Something of this is actually being constructed?
  2. I really miss that tower but I will say the new balconies matching those above the cornice are a wonderful restoration I hadn't noticed before.
  3. I'm another one who always thought highly of the Breuer Tower. When I came here in 1973 it was definitely my favorite modern building downtown. And I thought the Vasereley painting (silk print?) in the lobby was stunning. Wonder who has it now.... I was thoroughly repulsed with the idea of the structure being demolished, was involved in the preservationist activities, and am now thrilled the whole complex is about the best I could ever expect it to be.
  4. I'm dreaming of people from places like Strongsville or North Olmsted getting on the Rapid (after they drive to and park at a Rapid station), get off at the new Little Italy station, and walk either way - to Uptown or Little Italy. The bridge is currently ugly and I hope resuscitating it is part of this project. Particularly with Intesa filling in the space, I'd like to see one great entertainment/shopping/dining district with the bridge in the center. Like can be seen in other, and very flourishing cities!
  5. Painted? Yuck. The new brick doesn't match well? (I'll have to look.)
  6. Can't open the photo. Can it be posted a different way? I saw the building yesterday and have yet to see brick ornament replacements.
  7. ...and people scold me for posting an inquiry that might have been answered three pages back.... Last two messages identical, with different font.
  8. Update, in case anyone here hasn't heard: Turkey Ridge is going ahead!
  9. ExPatClevGuy - I wouldn't think of the clientele for "The 9" as "middle class." Definitely over the line into "wealthy." Same with whom I expect One Universtiy Circle to attract though, of course, many of them would be related to University Circle and these people to downtown. But many would be attracted to both. Yes, imho the new sign is quite classy - just the sort of thing I was hoping for. As for the reference to Trump Tower, a design resembling about anything on that stretch of Fifth Avenue is fine with me.
  10. Since no one has responded in all this time, I have found out the State didn't approve the Planning Department's rationale for a tax abatement incentment and the City was given six months to try to change the State's opinion.
  11. I think before The Avenues planners get too excited about Lakeside they should concentrate on what they originally set out to do - build up the lots on Superior Avenue and then along East 12th.
  12. I thought surely someone would post a photo of The 9's new canopy by now! Yeah, yeah - I could have taken a photo yesterday, but the canopy was far from completion.
  13. Tee hee. No, I'm sure many of us hear things and don't run to this forum to post them all.
  14. Good. l There was a substantial plan for that intersection about 20 years ago, when East 105th between Magnolia Drive and Superior was entirely different. We can see how little came of all of it. I went to the dedication of that small shopping strip, I think it was.
  15. It's one of Cleveland's most architecturally significant buildings of the mid-1960s, and its plaza is not extensive. In fact it was refereshing, with its landscaping (the years it was well maintained, that is). Think Seagram Building in New York and many other buildings set within main streets where there are long lines of buildings lining the sidewalks - nothing like an Erieview Tower and the plaza was sort of an oasis. It's not like there was a parking lot there, such as next to the City Club Building.... Guggenheim, Whitney, etc. - lots of good buildings have some setback. :?
  16. Yes, this is getting confusing. I was looking up hotels in the same chain as our new one. The way I understand it they are in the Marriott's Autograph Collection, and this one is "The Metropolitan." Some kept their old name, like "The Algonquin," in New York near Times Square.
  17. No - I believe only the hotel is to be called "The Metropolitan" - not the whole Breuer tower, which is to include the apartments.
  18. Regarding dave68's illustration, the unfamiliar viewer might assume the hotel company constructed the tower and the cutout was designed with the logo. Or the cutout was created when the logo was added. In this case, however, this proposal diminishes the significance of Breuer's special personal signature, so I don't go for it. A little simplistic for all the decoration up there to be combined. Thanks for posting your idea, dave68, though. I did want to see what you had in mind. Come to think of it, why isn't "Metropolitan" the name featured to be seen from a distance?
  19. w28th: I'l just say I like the "9" as is. It balances well with the dark but deep sculptural square. I hope they're the same distance from the corners.
  20. Has anyone heard anything new regarding plans for the current Cleveland Institute of Art site?
  21. My post mentioning Euclid Avenue was a response to the individual who posted he would rather see the new apartments go up on Euclid than on Superior. No, I never meant to imply The Avenue went all the way to Euclid....
  22. w28th: What kind of logo for The 9th would you consider better taste? Looks fine to me.
  23. Still waiting for commercial on first floor of apartment highrise. This has gotten ridiculous. As for 100+ apartments along Euclid Avenue instead, I like them on Euclid but it would likely mean replacing something good. I don't want to see one more pre-WW II building to be demolished on Euclid. Not one!
  24. What's the latest with the Turkey Ridge project? A "citizen" at a recent City Council meeting implied the developer would not be getting the greatly desired tax abatement he was seeking and possibly "depending on."
  25. Southwest corner of Cedar and S. Taylor looking better. Sure wish something wonderful would be done with northwest corner of Lee and Cedar. That was a beautiful, dignified, stylish building at one time, with beautiful windows, etc. A shame! Southwest corner would look a lot better with old-style windows and cleaned terra-cotta.
