  1. Yes, I noticed, as of yesterday, Sweeney is there and they're really going to town! Looks like the whole shebang might actually be painted this time! I'm also pullng for the red, frankly.
  2. Actually I just found an e-mail address: [email protected] Hope someone who knows something responds to my inquiry....
  3. Someone in this forum, a few months ago, seemed to be enough familiar with Dunham Tavern's general practices that he stated he thinks they paint one wall a year - something like that. I don't think that's quite true but whomever that was - do you have a clue what's going on there? They're always doing and not finishing funny things with the walls, and now there are several areas of clapboard painted a bright red. So what the deuce is going on? I don't want to call them cold and ask, and there is no e-mail address on the web.... :wtf:
  4. Yes - an employeed of the Union Club told me a new entrance down to the underground parking garage is being constructed.
  5. Someone told me the Ace people are only rebuilding what was there after a storm damaged the facade of their building back there. Just rebuilding with insurance dollars. The storefront by the sidewalk also had some work done recently. Sure I'd like to see Ace restore the facade but that's not what the friend thinks is going on. There has been a surface lot between the Union Club and the Sterling Building but I can't imagine anything going up there. Hoping that work on the bldg. just to the east of Dunham Tavern gets going soon. That red on Dunham's walls - could they possibly be changing the color to that" Wish they would! A somewhat similar (older) tavern buiding east of Rochester, NY - Stone-Tolan - is red and extremely attractive (I don't think it's as bright as photo here): http://www.landmarksociety.org/section.html?id=2&uid=3&pageId=16
  6. I usually go by on bus or occasionally drive by on way to work or one weekend when no one's there. HealthLine lanes on Euclid sure don't encourage one's parking on the street or even going slowly to look over a project. :-( Sometimes I just ask a question here with the hopes someone can answer quickly, with no special effort.
  7. What's going on with that occupied building, to the west of the Dunham Tavern area, with all the scaffolding on the west side? I see they're working on the facade too. Will this become an all-modern exterior? No, it's not included in the project list posted here of 6/20/2011.
  8. Now it's clear that the greatly fire-damaged western building of Erie Square is indeed being rebuilt and, as of the past few days, huge supports have been installed along the brick shell. Makes me feel real good to see this 1920s apartment building come back to life and house those who really need it. And the residents will get all new apartments - assumably quite different from those of the eastern building - with brand new features. Of course, the whole complex may have gotten extensively renovated in the past, so I don't know what '20s original features may still be intact, but at least the exteriors will be Euclid Avenue of the 1920s. I've read when the duo was built there was a house in front. I'm sure this was considered luxury apartments when constructed.
  9. I think they'd allow people to come in the main entrance, very close to Euclid. The main entrance of the Rose Building, too, is at the corner of E. 9th and Prospect. Other buildings along E. 9th Street and Euclid, where the filming is taking place, have large numbers of workers but there are ways people can enter from obscure entrances.
  10. Here we are with the filming of "The Avengers" right by the Schofield Building.... Imagine if the hotel were completed and open :-(, as it surely was supposed to be by now; what a vew of the filming the guests would have access to! Of course, this is assuming the film people would still have selected that part of E. 9th.
  11. I got back to "Old Chinatown" today - Rockwell east of E. 18th - and found much work is going on with the main building. Last few times I was there they had installed the attractive new "gates," there was much text on the walls (with somewhat poor English) describing the big plans they had, and all the businesses/offices were gone. Looked like everything was at a standstill. Today there were beautiful new doors/windows and the workmen were busy. Now, can anyone tells us what's to come there next? I would have asked someone if they were handy but there was no one handy. No written signs whatever except the Bldg. Permits and I couldn't tell anything from them.
  12. Actually, if this is to take place I'm quite happy with it! I thought the Play House's move had all sorts of controversy associated with it but the issue now is saving the Small & Rowley/Philip Johnson-designed complex. So here, here!
  13. Heightsfan - Yes, I read your post a bit too quickly, though if you had spelled the complex' name correctly - "Play House" - I might have read it more accurately. I can assure you I've been totally familiar with both the [Cleveland] Play House as well as Playhouse Square for the 38 years I've been here.... Seems a bit crazy to use such an excellent theater facility as a medical school but at least the theaters provide auditoriums/lecture halls and I really want it all saved. If that's what it takes....
  14. Cleveland Clinic's medical school taking up space in Playhouse Square? Terrible fit! It's bad enough the CC keeps swallowing up buildings. and square feet in the E. 79th-E. 107th area, now they might take over some of Cleveland's primary entertainment district? What is needs is more restaurants and other amenities for those interested in performance pursuits, not a medical school.
  15. What exactly is the Lerner College of Medecine? Is this part of the Cleveland Clinic and located on Carnegie?
  16. Well, I STRONGLY, STRONGLY disagree with your first statement!!
  17. I was just thinking on the bus this a.m. it's suprising the private houses on the east side of E. 89th, between Euclid and Chester, haven't been "swooped up," too? The next two significant threats I'm aware of are the Church of the Transfiguration, by the Play House, and the Euclid Avenue Church of God at E. 86th. And the Play House complex itself, though the last I heard there were plans to retain it.
  18. There's been a crane near the fire-damaged western bldg. of the Erie Square complex for over a week. I haven't been able to determine what they're doing there - starting a reconstruction/restoration effort or a demoliltion effort.... I think the boarded-up first-floor windows might be new, though. Would that imply demolition or reconstruction? The basic brick exterior shell looks pretty good. Rebuilding the bldg. with exterior as was, with the contemporary piece connecting the two buildings, would be far better than just demolishing it and doing without the housing units there. Can't picture a brand new, modern structure replacing it either.
  19. It looks like my wish for the fire-damaged Erie Square shell might be saved after all.... Can't say for sure but it looks like the equipment near it might be connected with actually trying to rebuild and repair it - such as along the western wall. I really do want about every pre-WWII building along Euclid to be saved, and we recently lost the other twin apartment houses. They could have been spectacular as a home to the elderly.
  20. Yes, it was a decent-enough looking building at one time. I'm almost never in favor of anything from before WWII disappearing from Euclid Avenue, but in its present situation this one should go, as fast as possible. Unless, of course, someone comes along to make it totally respectible again. And they won't.
  21. Who owns the ugly hulk to the west of Dunham Tavern and why hasn't it been demolished?
  22. lafont replied to a post in a topic in Completed Projects
You're certain nothing is planned to go in front of it?
  23. Well for Pete's sake.... Who would know? Sure could have fooled me! They are a bit outrageous, but I thought maybe they're "the latest thing" in roadside architecture....
  24. So what does everyone think of Big Orange, and Big Purple, being created near E. 79th to enhance the streetscape?
  25. The latest threat to historic architecture on the Avenue is the possible demolition and then property purchase of Euclid Avenue Church of God, at 8601: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/listDetail.php?identity=85 This is a City Landmark, designed by Sidney Badgley. It would be such a shame to lose that church, of 1889!
