  1. Just saw the almost-finished Prospect facade today, and was almost in shock to find one of the entrances opens into a whole corridor with what looks like it's to be small shops? What's that all about? The floorplan they show in a window only include upstairs plans so they give no indication. I like the old-fashioned textural pattern on the walls, which remind me slightly of the Taylor Arcade that used to be there (or at least an arcade of that period . Question: Does anyone know if this corridor is actually in the spot where the Arcade was? I have it in a photo but it's not handy now. That would be great in concept - if some semblance or hint of the old Taylor Arcade is brought back to life - even if it doesn't have any retail at all.
  2. The hat store is particularly outstanding. Only a handful of American cities have one as good!
  3. Well that would be cool. It was looking like they had finished the cutting. I don't see any rhyme or reason to the order in which they're cutting each window.
  4. The illustration of the finished building used in the ads shows dozens of windows cut into the brick wall on the west side - not in the section closest to Euclid but behind it. Did they give up the idea of including so many windows? Looks like they did. For the sake of honesty they should change the illustration!
  5. Glass in facade windows on several floors, now. Great. 'Can't wait 'til they finish, remove the very unattractive and nuisance scaffolding, and clean it all! Looks like the terra cotta wasn't quite as fanciful as that of the Halle's or May Co. building, though. Halle's Bldg. has the nice old and muntined windows, too. I don't recall if the May Co. Bldg. still has them. As an aside but not totally unrelated, it's such as shame we're losing the terra-cotta-facaded Corlett/Cadillac Bldg. at CSU.... :-(
  6. Just let 'er rip off, regardless! 'Can't wait to see how that relatively narrow but tall strip facing the City Club Building turns out, too. When the real cleaning goes on it will sure sure embarrass the City Club fok next door. So it's "Schofield Building" but the prominent local architect was Levi "Scofield?" Is the building definitely to supposed to revert to the "Schofield" name or does that all depend on the main tenant (i.e. a proposed hotel, etc.)? Is it "officially" the "Schofield Building" again? "Euclid-Ninth" still? Who again was it named for originally? I know all this is easy to look up but it's so much more efficient when someone just answers here.... (hehe) :-P
  7. A little while back in this forum the idea of a "green wall" was discussed - whereby plant greenery would be planted to cover the wall. Was this purely speculative or is there some connection with the developer? How would that work with anyone's windows there? Probably not too well, though perhaps the vines or whatever could be trimmed, just like is done with Boston ivy (frequently a nuisance, though!).
  8. Regarding them new windows going in on the side of 668 where the Hippodrome Theatre used to be: as the openings have arched tops and the new windows are rectangular, what is to go in to fill the space? I know Cleveland, among many other cities, had hundreds of buildings with such windows, and the space was filled in with a wood strip. 'Sure don't look good with that gap....
  9. Is this authentic terra cotta being used or some sort of imitation? Obviously the new material is far lighter than the old; will it all be cleaned to match much closer?
  10. The "funny" thing about the "Bang and Clatter" building is that it was originally symmetrical - and thus better looking with a nice balance - but lost its western section when the May Company was constructed (unless it got incorporated into the larger building, which I doubt). So it was kind of a quirky facade before the remodeling was done, which had been many decades ago. :-D
  11. Approx. what month do you anticipate opening the cafe or athletic center, please?
  12. Okay, I'll look again when I come back from Paris.
  13. Still didn't see these images, however I didn't have your description. East or west of E. 9th, as there are mini-parks along Huron on both sides. I looked on the west side, near Panini's, and didn't see the images.
  14. Will this open? I knew there were some globes on the monument but I don't recall how many. Did anyone here know new lights would be installed? I guess this is partially a security thing. Someone here had written they were so certain the lights along the Huron Mall would be replaced but many months later they have not.
  15. So what does anyone think of the fake Victorian lightpoles around the Solders and Sailors monument? Must have just been installed. I've written here about the new lights along Euclid; I had been told there would some more traditional lights but they never materialized (would have been nice around Playhouse Square, for example). The Square is not exactly the Corridor but they are different - actually a very trendy design and not that close to what they would have done, say, around 1900. They're also a whole different type than the others downtown. The globes that were there actually had sort of an 1890s affinity - wonder how old [they] were.... Of course the new fixtures have very modern-looking bulbs, etc. They're very bright. So what does everyone think? No, I don't have a camera here to post photos. See them for yourselves; just in time for the concert.
  16. Thanks. When I quickly read "Medical Mutual Plaza" I was thinking only of the fairly standard planters outside the Medical Mutual (actually, Rose) Building. Don't forget the historic images on the HealthLine, though they're a tad different. :-)
  17. Where on earth are these images embedded in the planters outside the Rose Building? I was just there and didn't see any? Embedded in just a few planters? I must have looked over at least ten planters.
  18. Yes, that's the thread I've seen. Okay, I see this info. is pretty recent. Thanks! Actually, most of the facades that remain around there are the originals. A good share of the downtown buildings that had had their facades remuddled after WWII have come down, as they were usually the smaller buildings which were gradually replaced by more substantial buildings.
  19. Does anyone know the latest status regarding the proposed restoration of the Schofield Building (Euclid/E. 9th) facade? Who is behind it and should one expect something to go on this year? I know the owners already removed some modern panels, to determine the condition of the old materials, and then returned them. Actually I'm sorry they put them back; I'd love to see what it looked like underneath. Yes, I know, someone posted a few photos somewhere in UrbanOhio but I'd like to see the building myself....
  20. Thanks. :-)
  21. Yes, noticed the same things. So it's "Pesto" - is that a chain? The mural - sort of French -is obliterated, I see. Yes, the planters look surprisingly well! There are long stretches without them, even in some cases where there are no trees or other obstructions either, but the gatherings are rather aesthetically pleasing. Glad to see the hard workers came through in the four evenings, as promised! And we have something different than any other downtown in the world. I sure like them better than those computer-generated-designed sculptures at the Mall. They're not the same artist, are they? One Euclid I see there are some vines already spreading out on the sidewalks; regular trimming will be essential. Like the new pots of flowers on E. 4th, too! Those "blue ice" thingies are a little peculiar, but better than nothing.
  22. So it's Monday a.m. and the hard workers came through - at least the planters in the part of Euclid I've seen so far are fully installed and fully planted. I'm slightly surprisingly very happy with the aesthetics. Wish someone would post some photos here; I don't have my camera here today (at the momen it's raining, too). Haven't seen a word in the PD yet - thought they'd catch it by Fri. let alone today.
  23. I could keep going: high quality, tasteful men's or M & W clothing store? Gift shop? Tasteful, high-grade jewelers? On and on....
  24. Actually I'd like to see a big, popular big box-type store at Euclid and Fourth - OfficeMax? Book store??? Etc.
  25. I'd still like to see a good-sized restaurant there, as was planned for over a year. I'd like to see a lot of other things in many other buildings but not right there.
