  1. Heck, our economy's trashed. What the h*ll else do we have to talk about?
  2. C-dub, Dayton and Columbus are in a price war now, and we also forced Cincy (READ- Delta) to drop fares. It's far from being a pointless airport.
  3. Cool thread Jeffery. A great read!! (and a great compliment to your Northtown thread)
  4. Yeah, gotta love that lawyer's name. Anyways, what an awful topic (apologies, Cinciyday, I just really hate the thought of DE-Annexation). It seems like a waste of time, effort, and resources to me. Of course, I also think that housing on lots that are .5 acre or under should ALWAYS be within city limits, as well, but another day, another arguement.

Wonderful thread, Jeffery!!! Read bits and pieces of it previously on Daytonology. Awesome thread, it cleared up many of the mysteries about Northtown for me (like- Does that shopping center really have two floors? If so, why the h*ll does it?), especially since I drive by there once every couple weeks. It is a really cool center, definitely didn't realize it was a Beerman project. Even though it's not really recognized now (Westtown and Easttown definitely get the recognition as Beerman centers in my mind), I would argue that it's Beerman's best. Again, awesome thread, Jeffery!!!!

Who the h*ll here would want a "true conservative governor"? Anyways, gotta back Strickland on this one. Although he's screwed Dayton over a few times with Twin Valley and other stuff, I still think he's held us stable as a state, and he supports 3-C. What's to lose?
  7. Sorry I missed your post on the Towne Mall thread. Anyways, since I'm too lazy to go over there, I will say that I followed your link and all of these plans seem extremely impractical, especially in today's economy. What Middletown really needs (and again, this is coming from an urbanist, really, so I apologize) is a ..... uh....... LARGER MALL (there, I said it). Anyways, the area really is in need of such a facility, knowing this from living there for a decade myself, and there is ample room to expand to the north, especially if the well-built Meijer facility was incorporated into the new structure. The center could probably hold down four 150,000+ sq. ft. tenats easily, most likely being El-Bee, Sears, Macy's, and JCP. This would not include Meijer, which could easily remain at the center, and also even encouraging Danbarry Cinemas to build a new facility at the current "main entrance" to the mall and convert their current facility to the dollar-saver format. Yes, they would have to demolish the current Sears store, along with the new Staples and Aldi buildings, but it is doable. The current El-Bee and the former Dillard's could also be converted to an outdoor style, a la Kenwood Towne Centre, with stores like MC sporting goods, Barnes and Noble, Old Navy, Best Buy, etc. filling the outside. There is a real market for this, despite the economy and major developers' convictions that "freeze-your-butt-off-in-a-cheaply-built-plaster-land centers" are so much better. Sorry to also be so sprawl-ish, but believe it or not, Towne Mall is really the only mall besides the former Salem Mall that I ever became really attached to. I would really hate to see Middletown waste it like this.
  8. Hell, if I ever went there, I think I would need the whole bottle..... Great Pics, though!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. Wow. Great pictures, but that town is disgusting on almost every level imaginable. Reeks of old cheap tex-Mex food (yes, I can smell the stentch from here)

Jeffery, I checked on your site like I do every once in a while when I think you're holding back on posting on Urban Ohio or Dayton Most Metro (which really doesn't work well with my computer, btw. I don't know why), and I saw it's closed. Anyways, that's a real bummer. You have meant so much to our region, and aspiring urbanists like myself. I hope you can do the same at wherever you are moving on to. Good Luck, Jeffery, and thanks for all the great posts!!!!!
  11. Thanks for the shout-out, jday118!!!!!!! Anyways, hopefully they are giving you better info here than the suburbanite city-data forumers did, because most, if not all, of them don't understand urban values and the urban lifestyle whatsoever. Since I am not that much of an expert on Cleveland myself, I can't really give you any better advice than what I gave on city-data, but again, I hope you sitck around and browse through this site some. It really is wonderful!!!!!!!!
  12. ^Very nice post, Jeffery. Sorry to support sprawl here for a moment, but I noticed something that caught my eye. Is there really a proposed Manchester Road intersection? If so, that's great!!!!!!!!! It's been needed for years now. There is no good way to access north Middletown from the highway, and an interchange there could really act as a catalyst for growth for downtown Middletown (since coming from University Ave. area is, IMO, the best way to appraoch downtown), Miami U-Middletown (and make it a more viable alternative for the suburbanites in Monroe, Springboro, West Chester, Lebanon, etc. instead of other community colleges or, Miami's thing they have at the VOA), and funnel some sprawl over to Madison twp north and west of Middletown, which would have residents that would likely use the north and central portions of town for shopping, entertainment, work, etc. This is great!!!!!!!!!!!
  13. This is amusing. The place that gladly stood as a backdrop during the McCain campaign now wants stimulus money from the government under Barack Obama. People should stop eating there.
  14. You guys remember that this is URBAN Ohio, right? Not "bash the promising-looking but dead at the moment" city in our state.com. Look, this project probably won't happen, but I would be thrilled if it did. We Daytonians (or Daytonnatians, as I guess we should be called now) need something bright and new to look to for some hope that doesn't lie within 10 miles of the Ohio River or in a suburb. Let us have our moment.

^A wake up call for what? That GA can steal jobs with stimulus money, incentives, and golf-course communities? No suprises there.
  16. Panel: Success of region tied to I-75 By Jacob Dirr, Tuesday, July 14, 2009 The Dayton and Cincinnati regions can no longer think of themselves as separate entities, but instead as part of a larger geographic area stretching to Columbus and Lexington, a Tri-State economic development expert said Tuesday. “In the last five years it has become obvious to the world that regions are much larger,” said Mark Policinski, executive director of the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments, or OKI. Policinski spoke Tuesday at a regional development forum, hosted by the Dayton Business Journal and sister paper Cincinnati Business Courier. A three-member panel — also including Leonard Robinson, partner at Robinson Lawton Kent Realtors in Middletown, and Bob Steinbach, director of regional initiatives at the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission — spoke in front of about 350 audience members. 17. Hey Firesnap, this is WAY better than suburb-data, isn't it? Anyways, if you haven't yet, please look aruond for a while, look at some old photo threads, economic development threads, etc. This is really a cool site, especially if you have an interest in urban areas (such as King-Lincoln or Franklinton), and you may even see your new pad. Good Luck!!!!!
  18. Oh yeah.... This is way off topic. Sorry!!!!!
  19. This is great news!!! Actually, I don't know if it would be that high risk, except for the fact that the economy is bad here. That area has a lot of traffic and UD isn't exactly a small school. It also has a need formore of this type of development, and the location is logical, so hopefully all goes well.
  20. The way unions work now? Heck yes. The way unions should, can and will likely be in the future? No, and they may be the ideal way to operate industry. Right now, a union manager's only goal is to fight for their workers, which is a very noble and necessary cause. However, when the workers are rather well off, such as many auto workers that have somewhat ridiculous compensation and benefits, then it just turns into a fight to kill the company, however well-intentioned the unionmen are. Although I am a strong union Democrat, I still think there is no reason why any corporation must pay for their employee after they are retired or give many of the benefits they do. Yes, they were a valuable asset to the company, but they have moved away from the company, so it is time for the company to move away from them. Still, after the auto bailout and bankruptcy mess is over, a beautiful thing will happen: the unions will become owners. There will no longer be a middleman or rift between the worker and his company, and there will no longer be opposing camps within the company. Workers will determine what is best for themselves without endangering the company by demanding more frills, and they will be more likely to not give in to the pressures of outsourcing, layoffs, bad products, etc. that are easily used as cheap management tricks at the expense of the worker. This model has worked well so far for Appleton paper in West Carrolton, near Dayton, along with many other strong companies throughout the state. Again, maybe I'm alone on this, but I don't really see why there should be two seperate warring components running one company, especially when a combined unit could most effectively run the company in a way that made employer and employee happy. We'll just have to see how it all turns out.

^Agreed with Jeffery. Y'all be stuck with us and our low-ball stats for 2010.....
  22. ^Agreed, C-Dawg. Also, many of the people that work for the Iams headquarters in Vandalia by 70/75, which is relocating to Mason, are not going to relocate along with it. Being a northsider, many of us don't feel that it is necessary to move just to combat a 1-hour commute (although I will admit it is god-awful, fortunately I don't have to do one anymore!). And, since Dayton's economy is so horrible, few feel that it is sensible to try and sell their house in this market. Unfortunately, many of the employees of the new outlet mall in Monroe will be former auto workers from Dayton, so yeah. Many around here have ridiculous commutes.

^^Wow, PerfectTimeOfDay, wonderful post, and now it does really all make sense. You should send this of to the DDN or something, as well, because this really explains a lot that all of the "uncompetitive" BS (labor unions, higher taxes even though we are changing our tax structure, etc.) that really made no sense is false. I'm hoping this doesn't affect you, and if it does, well, sorry about the humid Georgia summer coming up. It also looks like maybe we can hope for some growth from Teradata (along with maybe even grabbing up some more of NCR's business), and connecting our region to HP would really help keep Dayton viable. Glad to hear this!

^ I can't wait until Georgia has to start paying fortune 500 companies $60 mills a year to retain then. That will be great (and they say we have a problem with unions...)
