  1. Does anyone think this weekend's release of the Atlas Shrugged movie might get any conservatives to rethink their positions? For those unfamiliar, its based on a Tea Party favorite Ayn Rand novel that glorifies high speed rail. Unlike the 50s era book, the movie version is set in 2016 during a fuel crisis.
  2. Have they tried any sort of conifer? Don't know what their salt-resistance is like, but they're strongly associated with cold climates and aren't just twigs for half the year. Eiither the innerbelt of the casino, or both.
  3. We're all aware of Morton's, but it fills a somewhat distinct and narrow market segment. Clearly not the same segment as Cheesecake Factory, Longhorn, Five Guys, etc. There's a pretty broad continuum between TGIF and Morton's.

One would think the Sports Commission might provide such info to our guests. Their work is pretty impressive overall, so I'm surprised the grocery thing was missed.
  5. Your analogies are... esoteric. Judging from responses, it seems something akin to TGIF is what downtown is missing. I think everybody, including the entire chains-only crowd, would prefer everything Glenville listed over a TGIF. It doesn't have to be low-end schlock to be a recognizable national brand.
  6. Sometimes they have it at Corky's by St. Eds. Not always though. Another possibility is the Beer Engine, but that's just a guess.
  7. Shaker Heights has no disposable income? West Park? Clifton? These places all have a 15 minute express transit ride downtown.
  8. Mixed use complex? That sounds a heck of a lot cooler than the east side transit center.

I sat about 8 rows up from Tait last night. Felt good to be there for his last game.
  10. That is an odd choice... overcast skies?
  11. That seems rather elaborate and expensive for a bus stop. Was laying them over on 21st street really such a pressing problem? It's not like we don't have existing facilities in embarassing states of disrepair. And I can't help but think this isn't the highest or best use of a parcel so close to CSU.

Reghi is cool. I also like Bentley and Cherry, even though Bentley says "particular" too much.

    Those comments are awesome.

Maybe a few, since some of their institutions remain. But very few.
  15. Well, given the number of dollars involved, it almost has to be a silver bullet to some extent. There needs to be a signficant and measurable payoff or it will be judged a pretty disasterous waste. Nobody would have supported raising the sales tax just to renovate the CC. The expenditure was premised on creating a substantial economic driver. In that sense, Connolly is just admitting the reality of the situation.
  16. Not the same lines at all. Come on. One is different flavors of the same land use, while the other is a clash of radically different land uses. Indy Restarant : Chain Restaurant =/= Any Restaurant : Industrial Park
  17. In a word, inclusiveness. Yes you'll find things here that you won't find elsewhere. But not to the exclusion of things that you would find elsewhere.
  18. I did not realize this was so controversial. Bottom line is YES, this is a "need" if our downtown is to reach the next level as a destination. We cannot force people to change their tastes for the purpose of visiting here. We need to provide a competitive range of dining choices. I couldn't be happier that our range will always skew toward the local and the unique, but we cannot completely ignore the other end of the spectrum. Hopefully the casino will usher in a couple more mainstream establishments.
  19. One time, on a trip, dad actually said "I just need to find a mall parking lot and then we can eat." Getting such a person to visit downtown is a lot easier than getting them to live there. Several orders of magnitude. But a little market analysis goes a long way. There are a lot of people who simply prefer chain restaurants. Either we include those people or we don't. I don't see how including them causes much damage, and it certainly can't hurt foot traffic. Maybe it gets them to notice the cooler stuff on E4th that they wouldn't otherwise have considered. And to Hts121's point, zoning has nothing to do with what type of restaurant occupies a given restaurant space. It's the same built environment either way, the same class of activity. Now if someone wanted to put a machine shop in Tower City, that might get my panties in a bunch.
  20. Shame on you for not introducing them to something local and better than a Longhorn... Maybe you need to show them that there are options outside of what they know and broaden their horizons... and show them whats special about where you live. I don't think you understand. Believe me I've tried. Diffrent strokes for diffrent folks, we'll just leave it at that.
  21. That would be perfect.
  22. Indeed I would. My parents alone aren't keeping that entire chain open. Basically, I don't see how it's bad to have a full range of choices. No one's making you pick something you don't want.
  23. When my parents come to visit, I have to google the nearest Longhorn Steakhouse to appease them. Every time. Boomers like chains, they like familiar and predictable. And chains would be viewed as a signal that downtown Cleveland is part of the national scene.

I take points off Bowers for the knee, though it checked out OK today. He still could be a Courtney Brown though. Fairley had that one great game, but then again Cameron Heyward tore up his bowl game too. Fairley has some Gerard Warren potential. Historcally there's a lot more Gerard Warrens than Warren Sapps. Quinn didn't play at all last year, so there's points off. I would jump on Dareus if he's available but I doubt he will be. He's the only top-flight DL without some kind of drawback or question mark. So if it were up to me, I'd take Peterson, Green or Jones (or Dareus) before any of those guys. But you may be right about Fairley. I'd be happy with him if we got him.

That's the key, we can't build our entire D-line with rookies. Without free agency we're in trouble no matter what we draft. We should spend at least 3 draft picks on D-line, it's an obvious glaring need. But with that #6 pick we should go with the best available athlete. And that's probably Peterson, Green or Jones.
