  1. They've been taking down parts of St.V's since at least last summer.
  2. Great to see all this new stuff go up, and you don't realize how much there's been till you see it all here together. Totally agree about the siding though. There's another thing you don't realize till you see them all together. Damn that's a lotta siding. Enough for the whole city, for a very long time.
  3. Exactly. That's what needs to be stopped. And there is zero constitutional right to panhandle on private property right in front of Tower City.
  4. Attn Mr. Johnson: the homeownership obsession is passe. Please read a news article from the past 3 years. Furthermore, we're talking about an area dominated by a college and two hospitals. Students graduate, doctors rotate. That calls for rentals. If you want your ward to improve over time, you can't force people to buy their way in upfront.
  5. Arrest powers probably aren't needed. The presence of someone visibly standing guard will work wonders. And when they're ignored, they can at least intervene on behalf of someone getting harassed, and call police or additional security if need be. But mostly it's about being there. Someone just needs to be there and be tasked with eliminating harassment.
  6. DCA should at least post someone in front of Tower City, where their own headquarters is.
  7. Yes, criminal fraud. A thousand times yes.
  8. The police shouldn't be dealing with this reactively... they need to actually patrol the areas of concern and prevent trouble. If people are filing police reports for getting harassed on a downtown street, in broad daylight, then the police have already failed on a grand scale.
  9. Harassment and menacing go beyond nuisance-level problems. And they alone, without a single instance of assault/battery, are enough to severely curtail business downtown.
  10. Cincinnati licenses panhandlers. Violate the rules, lose the license. It all comes down to safety forces choosing to perform the job they're paid to do. We have plenty of police for this task, and they even have a freaking horse stable at their disposal. In case they need to break a line of pikemen.
  11. I live around Shaker Square and it's more common there than it once was. Especially toward Buckeye. Last night there was a guy demanding that I sell him a cigarette, and my ignoring him only served to upset him further. I've also encountered more of this on Coventry recently. Trends not positive. Agree with the last couple posters that we need to address this head-on. Can't attract much investment or growth when we're projecting lawlessness, desparation and despair.
  12. There are some guys downtown for whom no isn't good enough, and for whom a flippant response is the wrong kind of invitation. This is a job for our safety forces. In fact, it's a job they already have.

    Leadership, strategy. Steelyard Commons.
  14. There's a separate "downtown" division of CPD. What exactly do they do? Downtown's not that big, and the trouble spots for aggressive panhandling (Tower City, lower Euclid) are fairly well defined. It seems at least feasible for them to address it. But when I've reported aggressive panhandlers to CPD officers stationed at Tower City they basically didn't care. "It's private property." Yeah, so what. And what do you think you're stationed here for.
  15. Agreed about the need for a parking structure like Cedar-Lee. It's that or more surface lots. Ideally everyone could take transit, and I believe we'll get there, but we aren't there yet.

    YMMV.

The commenter on the lack of aesthetics was on a roll, until he/she said they felt back East when they visited Columbus???? Huh? A lot of our new construction features siding and sheeting, while Cbus goes with brick. She has a point there.

No addtional BRT should be built until the current system reaches the level of service we were promised. Prove it can actually work. And for heaven's sake replace those ridiculous fare machines. BRT has not earned a repeat purchase.

This is a suicidal move for America. No one can afford to spend 50 years building massive cities and then just desert them. And the ones we're building now are far less sustainable.

Agreed. The rebulding has only just begun, while the exodus is running at full blast and will be for a while.

The larger part of "fixing the schools" is attracting a populace with more education and less poverty. There's only so much a school system can do. And downtown itself won't house enough new population to make much of a dent. Downtown is key, but by 2050 we need to work on more than just that.
  22. Very good points, urbanomics.
  23. Could be the same. But the shooting on 137th was south of Union Ave, and the guy ended up at a Shaker Hts police station, per channel 5.
