  1. Social services is my current profession, so it's not like I think that's a bad thing. It's just not a solid building block for a commercial district, not at street level. Land uses can be good in some ways but not in others. It's important to consider all angles. That said, I'd still like to see more social services in the burbs. Second floor is a different ballgame entirely. I'm a big fan of Michel Delacroix's paintings of Paris. The pattern that jumps out at me in those is ground floor retail, second floor office, and residential above that. You can see this pattern in historical photos of any city. That's how you get the most bang for your buck, in terms of land use.
  2. I'm glad that article mentioned the intermodal station. That's the part I'll be keeping an eye on most.
  3. Speaking of Westlake, why can't they host some of these social services? Crocker Park is served by RTA. Consumers of social services should be introduced to the area's premier retail destinations... they have as much right to go to Crocker Park as anyone else. Spread this stuff out more, it isn't fair to anyone that it's all in central Cleveland.

We could really use a new Supreme Court. This isn't the first time they've shut down anti-forclosure efforts. Vote Eric Brown for Chief Justice. He's only been there a couple months. Other than Brown, find out which Justices are incumbents and vote against them in November. These are technically non-partisan races so you gotta do your homework.
  5. I think of Lorain Avenue as the Boulevard of Used Car Lots. Some parts retain more density than others, but this theme carries all the way into West Park.
  6. I'm out of the loop here... what's MRN doing with regard to storefronts?

    Agreed... great idea, tough sell.
  8. I haven't done an inventory recently, but seems like several spots are open.
  9. The best thing RTA could do for downtown (non-audio related) is expand 24-hour services to areas where young people live... or at least keep lines running strong till 3am or so. Shutting down the Rapids at midnight is just awful. And lines like the 26 and the 81 need more frequency during peak nightlife hours. I realize this may be a money issue, but I hope it will have high priority going forward. Far too often you see a concert downtown and your bus/train route is done before the show is. This adds to the sense that transit riders are second-class, because they end up having to leave before everyone else.
  10. Some friends and I started a group at CSU dedicated to retaining graduates in the area. So far so good. Many of these people have in-demand degrees and/or capital to start businsses.
  11. That's not the only possible explanation, especially for a place that charges 4-digit rents in Cleveland. My view is that this demonstrates the amount of pent-up demand that exists for rentals in the central city. My lack of surprise that it's done well is based on my perception of that demand.

If his claims have no merit, they shouldn't get far and shouldn't cost anyone much. If they do have merit, he has every right to assert them.
  13. I don't often beat this drum here but... what the hell is wrong with those people? Do they all have bumper stickers that say "I heart Brain Drain?"
  14. My understanding was the the OP looked there but found the housing types not fully appealing. Going through all the relocation threads, this seems like a recurrent theme. On that note, I once lived in the Chelsea building at W14th and 490. Might be just what the OP is looking for. It had some maintenance issues back then, but it's been awhile and I understand the place is under new management. In 2002 I was paying $650 for a 3-BR there! In general, the near west side lacks non-duplex rental housing, but West Virginia and Chelsea are notable exceptions.

    Interesting project.
  16. I think it's a fairly big deal. If we have a Play House... and we have a Play House Square...
  17. Nothing surprising about it. This market is practically desperate for urban apartment units. Keep em coming!
  18. Most of what you're looking for is located a few miles east or west of downtown, on the edges of the city and in inner-ring suburbs like Lakewood and Cleveland Heights. Lakewood in particular would offer easy commutes to the Industrial Valley area. You should definitely check out apartments in downtown itself, though the supply of 1 BR units there is limited.
  19. At least there's no speeding on 422. They make damn sure of that.
  20. Other than viewing them as freelance capitalists, I agree.
  21. Wow! Sydney is crazy impressive.
  22. your opinion, not fact. Likewise. People don't always agree, and we really have covered all this before. There's not much to be said on the matter that wouldn't be redundant. That's why I'd like to focus on moving forward with the ramps and tunnels and stuff.
  23. While I'm glad this passed, I agree with most of the naysayers here. Too little too late. We missed the boat in the 90s. Revenue projections for these are likely way off. That said, it had to be done. And if Ohio were to liberalize its liquor laws as well, we would become that much more competitive in attracting businesses and residents.
  24. I thought we were moving on... I'd really like to discuss proceeding with the project sans speed reduction... That 3 mile stretch is a bottleneck leading into downtown for morning rush. Each mile, more traffic is added. Slowing traffic down won't do anything for lakefront development. Every identifiable goal of this project, other than slowing traffic down, is attainable regardless of speed limit. This bigger picture also supports the result of the legislative vote. And yes, Chester should be 50. In many cities it would be. Urban artieries are often 50 without any form of controlled access. An argument could be made for Clifton too, though not Lake. Those aforementioned roads in the Heights are not at all analogous to the West Shoreway, although a lot of roads further east that are 25-35 would be 50 in many cities. Here, they're speed traps.
  25. The 24-hour issue is separate from the free booze issue. I'm OK with banning free booze to protect existing establishments. But 2:30 is a problem.
