  1. Cleveland has long suffered from a lack of high-rise living options. Not everyone prefers that but some do. The 3 towers we're building right now are the first new ones in a generation. We needed those just to maintain some balance in our housing market. Another factor is location, for projects like the Lumen especially. The whole point of that project is to offer immediate proximity to the theaters. Spreading out the units would be self-defeating, it needs to be a tower.
  2. One morning I went to East Cleveland to get a building permit. I got to City Hall around 10:30 and found the building locked. Several people were standing around out front because they had court dates and didn't know what to do. I called office numbers until I got someone, told them there was a small crowd waiting all morning to get in. They basically said "oops" and sent a janitor to unlock the door.
  3. Wow. Turning that streetview back to 2007 it looks like such a normal, stable, even nice area - https://goo.gl/maps/8WAjtjZtQdo And then 10 years later it looks like Berlin after the war... So much damage in so short a time. And the longer this goes on, the bigger the problem Cleveland eventually has to absorb.

God help me, I am starting to think Kucinich is worth a go. DeWine seems like a guy he can beat. Meanwhile Cordray is the strongest candidate Dems have had in a while, at least on paper. I'm torn right now but very likely to vote Cordray.

If you ever get a chance to talk to Bob Roche, the leader of the anti-Wahoo movement, he is a genuinely sweet and well-spoken man. While neither of us would convince the other, I would ask what has changed since 1989, when "Major League" came out. IIRC it garnered zero protests. My answer to that question is we've become more thin skinned as a people, to the point of seeking "offense" when none exists. This has become a virtue to some. This is toxic in a pluralistic society and we are seeing those poisonous results. This is as good a place to push back as any. Few people alive today grew up with Cowboys & Indians as a popular genre. In 1989, that proportion was different. I'll grant a non-racist original intent for the team name and logo, but throughout its existence it has clearly traded on old timey anti-Native sentiments. Those sentiments are pretty much gone now.
  6. They kinda were though. The national priority back then was to claim as much territory as possible, before someone else did. Frontier states were favored to encourage their settlement. Then as the old frontier fills up, the advantage fades from there and passes to the new frontier.
  7. I thought this might happen when I first saw the boardwalk concept in FEB's plans. Any historic building stock that was missed in the first rampage would soon be viewed as a threat to "access," which is the new "vibrancy." It's like, who put these stupid buildings right in the middle of our boardwalk? Access/vibrancy requires lots of setbacks and promenades.
  8. So it's not out of place, it just needs some investment like most of Cleveland's storefronts.
  9. Gentrification shouldn't reduce walkable retail. Abbey Market is an important part of the neighborhood.
  10. I miss the prewar naming system. I've lived in old buildings called the Chelsea, the Buckwood, the Esmond... random, but more memorable than numbers.
  11. These LAND people seem to specialize in... stuff like this.
  12. Until recently, UC contained very little residential. Most residential in its area is assigned to Glenville, Hough, Fairfax, Little Italy or a suburb. Compare to Oakland in Pittsburgh or Clifton in Cincinnati, both of which include their own neighborhood areas with generations of former residents. As a destination, UC has solid branding. As a neighborhood, it's had almost nothing to call its own until the boom of the last decade. There used to be a lot of mixed use there, before the hospitals tore everything down, but several place-names were in use back then even if UC was one of them. And that was all bulldozed. Glenville's branding is limited to Superman and a bunch of NFL prospects, but that's more than most comparable neighborhoods can claim. Anyone who follows football or comic books has heard of Glenville.

Hough's political leadership has been pushing for this, and Cleveland's system of governance gives them substantial control over development. Hough has a new councilman now so let's see what happens.
  14. Well, there's the circle problem. And it's a little long and cumbersome. It's not terrible, it's halfway down the hit list. I do somewhat prefer Doan's Corners.
  15. I made a thread for this long ago. Cleveland has some awkward nomenclatures that could bear some cleaning up. Glenville is one of the few neighborhoods here with a unique name and successful branding, so I would hesitate to lump it in with anything else, even for short term gain. And "University Circle" is on my nomenclature hit list already. I'd rather call that Glenville than vice versa.

The worst is when your roommate gets a new girlfriend who is a psycho, and she has a pet who is also a psycho.

Definitely interested but my schedule is random. I think any bar would be willing to host us.

The flip side to saving money with a roommate is committing to a home you can't afford without their help. That can really blow up in your face.
  19. Columbus seems to have at least as much office space along I-270 as it does downtown. While this arrangement has probably cost Columbus a couple towers in its skyline, it does not appear to have hindered urban development on the whole. Cleveland's problem isn't the location of the office space, it's the location of the tax revenue borders. Get rid of those borders and there's plenty to go around.
  20. I can't help wondering if slapping the University Circle brand on everything nearby might help. Glenville is North UC, Fairfax is South UC, etc. That's the direction this project name seems to be taking, and while I kinda hate it, I can't quite convince myself it's a bad idea.
  21. That looks like a very positive development for Glenville.
  22. Both of those places get higher end clientele. Velvet Tango gets the highest end clientele, and I believe that's the place seeking a new owner.
  23. Tower City had Disney and Warner Bros stores until the mid or late 90s. It would be great to see that kind of thing downtown again.
  24. Sounds like what's happening in Cleveland but on a different scale.
  25. I recently went through the same situation so I feel your pain. But as long as you got 24 hours notice, I would not recommend giving potential buyers a hard time when they arrive. It won't help your relationship with the landlord. It also won't stem the flow of people coming through. When somebody buys it, that's the end of the showings. So really you're better off playing along or even playing salesman. Unfortunately the law does not favor your position.
