  1. Thrived so much they systematically burnt cities down in anger over how much they were thriving. What you're pointing to is an early 20th century effort by the AA community to integrate and have a place at the table. What we've been seeing more recently is what happens when something as big as that plus the civil rights movement plus the riots is neutered by "de facto" policy reversals and the immensely effective counter-tactic of sprawl. And do we agree now that females aren't getting their share of the blame for all the unattached males?

Every idea in history sounded stupid until it didn't... like the world being flat, or us being the center of the universe. Whether the world ends in 2012 or not, it's pointless to worry about it.
  3. Gross mischaracterization. But I'll let it slide. I asked someone in the city's planning department about that lot at a City Club event a couple years ago. They very sheepishly said they had no idea what to do with it. Maybe there should be a contest or something. I'm not sure how that lot could be any more attractive. It has connectivity, as they say. Since the city owns it, land acquisition costs shouldn't be a problem for anyone. If someone is willing to build something serious on it, give it to them and let them pay it off nice & slow. Slower than a bank would ever allow. And that's not all the help the city/county/state/feds could offer. Let's get this show on the road.
  4. I think it looks great. W25th needs to keep improving for many years to come. It's still mostly potential right now.

Not so much buy in, but I find them interesting. Do some googling involving a "four dimensional hypersphere" if you want to really freak out. The gist is that time goes in cycles and the end/beginning point (2012) has some big bang type properties. There's also a line of theories that the change taking place then would be more subtle, maybe more positive.
  6. That belongs in my Cleveland Nomencature thread. What a stupid, stupid name. And what a stupid salary to pay him, unless it's for him to buy a bus to physically ship people in here.

I don't understand how we can't afford to build a pile of dirt. How could the new plan be "scaled down" from that?

    Nearly.

Oooo, never saw that last one before. I like it. Much better than doing BRT up Buckeye.
  10. The new locker purchase fell apart... not sure what happened. Maybe it was too financially ambitious. It doesn't seem like any of these spots is big enough, except maybe the big lecture hall mentioned above, formerly known as Sea World. But they need that room for big classes. I'm wondering if maybe they'll expand the building eastward. There is a lot of empty space there, the Corlett building is doomed, and I think plans for the new arts building have been shelved.

You'll have that. Finding apartments is tough. I'm not familiar with Detroit Manor, but I like the area around it.

I got busted for expired plates last night! :police: :whip:

I don't disagree about the ramps & caps either. That stretch of freeway is a bit suicidey no matter what you do, but the ramps are necessary. If you can't get to downtown/midtown from it there is no reason at all for the innerbelt to exist.

I agree with most of that, although I think cars and people can get along fairly well in most circumstances. And sometimes 5 minutes can mean the world. You sure as heck want it to be available when you need it. Cost-benefit analysis should come into play of course, if we're talking about tearing something down. And sometimes it's not about speed, it's about flow and order. These carry their own benefits, primarily in reducing accidents. Regarding that a-hole behind you on the freeway... it's me. It's always me. I'll wave next time.

I can see pictures, I can even run video, I just can't hear anything.

Defeating the ODOT mentality may involve admitting that their goals have value. It is not wrong to want a simple and unobstructed path to your goal, nor is it wrong to want to get there as soon as reasonably possible. I don't think the public will be very receptive if we seek their approval by telling them that getting around easily is a bad thing. We can't afford to be anti-car or anti-road. Our best bet is to demonstrate how much better other options can be.

When people post a video clip, because most of the computers I use throughout the day have no speakers.

Why is it so swoopy? The land between the bridges would be a near-total loss, so it makes sense to minimize that gap.

All hail the KJP southern alignment! Seriously, we could get rid of the entire 77/90 mess, which eliminated the south end of downtown. Then we get to build a new south end of downtown!
  20. If I had to guess, it would be in the part of the building that used to be the library. That would be the wing that jettisons out to the east. Depends on how big they want to make it. Some of the lecture halls could provide a smaller option. But that section was built into new classrooms, boardrooms, and clinics just last year. No way they tear it up again...?
  21. Palijandro7, your points here all make good sense. I still disagree with most of them. On the immigrant comparison, let's examine the fact that "immigrant" families from Africa were ripped apart as soon as they got off the boat. It would take an entire book to flesh out the connection that has with today, but given how crucial family ties were for the first generations of European immigrants, it's hard to claim that there couldn't possibly be a connection. You're not the only one who's made good arguments equating the two scenarios, but I am at this point unable to buy into any such arguments. For all the similarities, I really think the differences are at the heart of the matter. I think it would be an interesting study to find out how many unemployed fathers in these communities willfully left their families vs. how many were kicked out. I'd love to tell you about the case I'm doing at work right now but I can't. It really speaks to this issue. I think we're arguing two different things here. You're saying individual poverty doesn't excuse absent fathers, and I completely agree with you. My point was that they often don't get the chance, because the mom wants to be provided for too. If you can't, you ain't a man. This is often much more important to the mom than the kids are. I don't think that traditional mentality has subsided whatsoever, except in somewhat elite and progressive circles.
  22. Or, they could lay train tracks that go from under tower city to the front of the convention center. Except that we already have such a thing. I can't understand how the waterfront line has disappeared so completely from the public consciousness-- particularly FCE's public consciousness. Tower City and the Mall are already linked with a rail line. As far as I'm concerned that ends the connectivity argument before it begins. But we keep operating in a world where that 10 year old train doesn't exist. I'm flummoxed.
  23. We're probably not looking at the PD for coverage. PBS, the networks, the weeklies, radio, that's all more likely. A mentor once told me to forget all those secondary channels, that the big local paper is the only thing that has enough exposure to be concerned about. But in a way that's yesterday's thinking. Plus the local paper is the problem here, so we have to work around them anyway.
  24. I'm pleased to hear that, but we don't have six months. We need to put something out there in as little as six days. I can't help much with that. I may be able to show up at a rally of some sort. I really like this idea, KJP. I wish I could do more to advance it.
  25. I intend to do that with or without UO (no offense, I just can't be contained), as soon as I am able. That means starting about 6 months from now. I'm putting a team together. Several pieces are already in place. We're gonna rebuild this town! Assuming I can find work here, that is...
