Cleveland: Demolition Watch
There isn't much on that stretch of Euclid that I wouldn't demolish at this point. I would save all the churches, other than that ugly new Mormon one, save Rugby Hall, save anything else built pre-1950, but level a whole bunch of awful junk that should never ever have been allowed to go up there. Some poor soul has to pay for the demolition, so save the trouble and start telling people "that's inappropriate for Euclid Avenue and you're not building it there."

US Economy: News & Discussion
It does makes you wonder how these people became analysts. This, the fact that nobody seems to have learned anything, is why I think there should be a lot more management/analyst turnover mandated as part of any bailout. The current people have been flat out wrong this entire time. I'm serious when I direct them to our country's dire shortage of nursing assistants. I don't think our economy is going anywhere until these idiots are relieved of command.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Increases are unlikely outside of specific gentrifying areas. The last census was during the real estate bubble, which hit lower income neighborhoods very hard in the intervening years. The only non-gentrified neighborhoods in Cleveland where I would predict increases are Asiatown and the Clark/Stockyards area, both due to immigration. Overall I still expect Cleveland to show losses. Obama may push to have better inner city counts, but I have to wonder how many people Bush got into Commerce over the last 8 years. They'll fight any such efforts. Remember when Obama tried to appoint a republican to head Commerce, and census plans were one of the reasons he withdrew? This could get ugly.

Cleveland: City Hiring Practices
Judge blasts Cleveland's hiring practices, fines the city $900,750 Posted by Henry J. Gomez April 13, 2009 23:59PM http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/04/judge_blasts_clevelands_hiring.html Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and his two immediate predecessors made the city vulnerable to accusations of political patronage and favoritism, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Peter Corrigan has ruled. In a scathing 15-page decision released Friday, Corrigan blasted Jackson and former Mayors Jane Campbell and Michael R. White for ignoring civil service testing requirements. The city, he wrote, also failed to comply with several court orders stemming from a 15-year-old lawsuit.

Off Topic
That's where the main homeless shelter is. There are also several church missions in that general area. Also the main county welfare building is nearby at 18th and Superior. It's definitely our skid row, and something to consider as they expand the Avenue District and CSU.

On the good side, the bullpen is OK and Kerry Wood looks awesome.

Social media poll (twitter, facebook, etc.)
I'd get no work done at all if I was involved with that stuff, plus this.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
It is possible their editorial board simply and honestly likes the TC site better, and they're so certain they feel they must continue to push it in that direction... no FCE influence whatsoever. Even under that scenario, the PD is still in the wrong. It isn't the newspaper's job to decide where the thing gets built. It's their job to report the news objectively.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
Thank you again for all the information and insight. I worry a little bit that if midtown wants the site empty, we're not likely to see buildings there. I've been confused for years as to where midtown stands on the subject. As a side note, I'm clueless about the sanitary lateral issue... that's over my head. Can you elaborate? It seems incongruous to me that the form-based zoning code would call for density and no setbacks all along Euclid, while simultaneously embracing a plan to put a zero-density rural amenity on that key parcel. I like the zoning overlay. But what good is it if it would still allow a dirt track to be placed in the middle of the city? Either we have a plan, or we take whatever comes regardless of how urban it is. I don't think we can have it both ways.

Poll: Do you want kids?
No. Genetic lineage is an interesting academic pursuit, but every so often disputes about it turn bloody. And the US has done some crappy things to its own citizens based on genetic lineage. This is why people in my family had to cover up their genetic lineage for a very long time. So I wouldn't take it too seriously. My dad was adopted, and our not knowing about that aspect of the lineage is inconsequential. It would be nice to know what diseases are upcoming, but oh well. Seriously. The affiliations you take on individually are far more important than the one you're born with. For the same reason, I think hypenated names are ridiculous. They're becoming more common in sports and I hate it. I'd prefer people called themselves something like "He Hate Me," or maybe any extraneous name on the jersey gets shortened to "etc." I can understand not wanting to give any props to an absent father, but please just pick a name.

New Ohio Drivers License
Two good things about Ohio car registration: no inspection, and no requirement to already have insurance on the newly purchased vehicle before you can get a temp tag. All in all it's a more user-friendly system than many states have.

Who owned these buildings? That seems like the logical place to start, in seeking who to blame for their condition. There are many around here who revel in the privileges of ownership but reject every associated responsibility. The fault lies either with them collectively, or with the system that affords them so much destructive power. The lack of any visible citywide plan to preserve these assets is another problem.

New Ohio Drivers License
Agreed, ugly new design and no improvement in clutter. I hope we didn't pay much for it.

The info is very much appreciated, thank you. Is there any way that site could end up having buildings again, instead of a space? There are so many possibilities given its location. My ideal outcome would tie in with the Agora.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Not really. I understand it to be a replacement for an old sewer pipe, which they would have had to do regardless of the boulevard conversion.

Cleveland: Downtown: Technology Center
A punitive tax on surface parking would clear that right up. Have downtown property taxes vary inversely with building height, with historical building exemptions. They raised the tax on cigarrettes last week and quit lines were suddenly flooded. So raise the tax on surface lots, and architects' phones should be ringing off the hook. Labor and building materials can't remain cheap(er) forever. Time to jump on this.

^ I don't know much about them. I've looked over their plan and I like the rest of it, in general. It strikes me that the mountian bike park violates every single rule they've laid out for the area. So who's baby that is I don't know. It's probably someone they're afraid to say no to. I think it's one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard.

Poll: Do you want kids?
Same situation here. And with the kind of money I make, it would be irresponsible to have kids. That's about where I'm at. I'd like to have a few good years with my whomever before kids, but I'm still single and I'm not super young. Career came first and it's still far from solid. Right now money will not allow kids anyway, and I don't know when it will.

We'll be so much better off with a mountain bike park.

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
People are sometimes intimidated by table games, but never by slots. There's a zen quality to them for a lot of folks. I hate them, I like table games. We should offer something for everyone. We also shouldn't cowtow to the horse lobby. These should go downtown and not in racetracks. Not in bars either.

Are you a textaholic?
I read an article recently that posited maybe Twitter is paying people, lots of people, to constantly mention them in the media. It's one decent explanation for why the word Twitter is suddenly everywhere. Twitter. My understanding of Twitter is it's basically a forum of one. It's like this here, except you're the only person posting.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
The only good point made in there, which opponents may continue to push long after this is built, is that service needs to be sufficiently robust and affordable that it gives people a viable option. I wouldn't put it past opponents in the legislature (like this one) to pass the project then starve it for cash so their predictions of poor service can come true.

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
Governor Says He Would Likely Veto Slot Machine Proposal COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland said he would "likely" veto a proposal to put slot machines at racetracks across the state. Strickland said Thursday he remains opposed to expanded gambling, particularly through measures that could become law without the consent of Ohio voters. The Ohio Racing Commission has endorsed a proposal from track owners that would allow the Legislature to put lottery-run slot machines at the state's seven horse tracks. No ballot measure would be put before voters. Some lawmakers are considering the idea to help raise revenue for the state during a severe economic downturn. Strickland previously expanded the lottery with the Keno game but said a reasonable person would see the difference between that and thousands of slot machines. Are you a textaholic?
I dislike all these new portable communication devices, because of what they've done to social norms. Used to be, if you were dealing with someone face to face, phone calls could wait. Other people could wait. Now, your companion must wait. That's garbage. There are a handful of instances where texting is useful. Some have been brought up here already. I would add concerts and other noisy crowd situations. But it should never replace actual conversation, and talking on the phone should never replace actual hanging out. I see this happening and I don't like it. Like Yoda says, people need to focus on where they are and what they are doing.
