Strip District proposed in flats???
Wow. On the good side, I think you can count on that never ever happening again. I really do.

Are You Sick Of Defending Your City To Other People?
Demanding respect is far more effective than begging for it. We also need to do more to earn it, or neither one will do much good.

Heroes and Influences
Good points. A list is just one way to approach it. As to Tolkien, and this would apply to any author or artist, he made good points that millions of people took to heart. In doing so I think he improved the world. Ironically, one thing I credit Tolkien with is helping to redefine "hero." It isn't necessarily an exceptional talent who shows up at just the right time (Obama), it can be some average nobody who finds themself in entirely the wrong situation, yet pulls through. These people are often not well known, and LOTR is a tribute to all of them. I realize that all just sounded very corny. I guess I don't see this as too different from saying what bands you like. The same band will have different meanings, or no meaning, to different people.

Heroes and Influences
For most people, I think family and religious figures can be assumed as influences. But if they're particularly important to someone, it's still worth saying.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I'm becoming concerned about the future of the FEB project, since they are going to such lengths to get MM/CC there now. These efforts don't reflect well on their original plan. I hope someone has mentioned that at one of their staff meetings. I have a big soft spot for the Wolsteins because of all they do for CSU. I'd really like to stick with their original flats plan and let MMPI handle MM/CC as they see fit.

I share you sentiment, but I'm afraid the defending is still necessary. We'll know when it no longer is.

Heroes and Influences
Sunny topic for a sunny Friday. These can be fictional or real, who cares. No answer is too dumb. I would suggest that people don't give each other too hard a time about their choices, even if they're all dictators or televangelists. A few of mine: Ronald Reagan, Captain Kirk, Bernie Kosar, Ayn Rand/Neil Peart (viewed as a couple), Optimus Prime, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, JRR Tolkien, Tecumseh, Teddy Roosevelt

Ohio: GM, Ford, and Chrysler News & Info
The biggest failure of the English language is having no plural 2nd person pronoun. Half the time I say "you" in a post I mean the entire human race. And my reference to P&G was out of familiarity. There really shouldn't be any in-state or even interstate rivalries going on in this part of the country right now. I wouldn't mind seeing what all the rust belt states could do if they voted as a bloc in congress, regardless of party, to preserve our employment base. We might get PA and NJ to join in, and things could get tricky for NY state. Recent expats down south might start telling their congressmen to back off. We just need to buy some time to restructure everything. Our model is getting the crap kicked out of it by quasi-communist China. That steel illustration has been repeated time and time again by many countries. And they talk about us starting a trade war... give me a break. We've been losing a trade war for some time, on purpose, because that's our system.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
Because city and wilderness is a nice duality. Suburbs are the worst of everything. With all that Mine! mentality and nothing open to the public, you just plain can't go anywhere as a kid. To everyone who is obsessed with the sanctity of their yard, in a freaking subdivision: quit indulging your Gollum side. It'll drive you insane.

Ohio: GM, Ford, and Chrysler News & Info
Correct, but otherwise there would be no Youngstown. You don't think the rest of the country doesn't keep NY/LA/DC afloat? All we get is no-margin Cobalts and urban wreckage. Not wise to begrudge Youngstown its last bone. Half my friends still live there. They're getting angrier by the day. The same goes for Detroit and several other places. I mean, how would Cincinnati like it if everyone started buying foreign soap? I'm not trying to start anything, but I'm telling you that if the nation turns its back on the industrial midwest one more time-- somebody's gonna start something. It could make 1960s violence look quaint. We don't need that. We still haven't cleaned up from the last time.

Cleveland City Council
I was at a Wolstein event in the CSU law school atrium and Zack Reed was in the audience too. At the end of the speeches, the dean mentioned there was a basket by the door with gold-plated keepsake bookmarks for everyone there. It wasn't until we both had our hands in the basket, a half-second later, that I realized I was fighting with Zack Reed over these shiny trinkets. It was kind of funny how we both went straight for it as soon as the dean said gold.

Cleveland City Council
Whenever you hear east vs. west that's what they're really talking about. It would be ballsy to take both seats from either side. I think smaller wards are better for democracy, because it's easier for anybody to effectively campaign in one w/o big money. But as long as there are few to no at-large seats, I'm comfortable reducing Cleveland City Council by several more wards. It makes fiscal sense.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
The idea of people being so possessive about a tiny patch of land is curious to me. The only thing that ever bothered me about any yard is seeing people let their dogs go in someone else's. It's one thing to pass through because you need to, it's another entirely to leave poop.

I'm not usually the one saying this, but c'mon guys it ain't that bad. I had no sidewalks either growing up, but I walked where I wanted when I wanted. Problem solved. If people are concerned about people walking in their yards, they should put in sidewalks. Walking existed long before their yard did.

Best way to look for a roomate
Good point, I could have used a roommate my first year alone in a new city after college. Based on my recent kerfluffle, I would just advise you to get all aspects of your arrangement, especially timeframes and reasons for them, hammered out clearly in advance. And be honest with yourself when evaluating the other side's ability and intent to follow through. I did not do these things as well as I could have, this last time...

Best way to look for a roomate
Moral of the story: if you need stability, you're better off alone. Tying yourself financially to someone else is risky. You are kind of in a pickle now, because of a roommate, are you not? I grew to love living alone and I'm anxious to get back to it. You may find over time that you like it more than you expect to. Everyone's different.

Best way to look for a roomate
I've never had that experience, since I've never rented for more than a summer, while in college. The above is what scare me the most. My financial and housing stability is dependant on another person. If they chose to run out prior to the lease or don't pay their share of the rent, I could be liable. Then the snowball of credit and trying to obtain housing going forward is an issue. Yes, all of that. I was in an absolute panic.
