US Economy: News & Discussion
Can't hardly believe this is news in Feb 2009. But it will probably take dozens more such articles before there is widespread acceptance of how messed up things are.

Ugly Drug Stores
That one in Ink's picture ain't bad at all. There are a couple in Lakewood that were forced to look decent and they do. All it takes is a little push. Without that push, you get travesties like Euclid and 79th in Clevleand. Everyone involved in a project like that, including those who approved it for the city, should be charged by police as if they'd just graffiti'd a historic church.

I took a good look in person yesterday, and from the proper angle it appears that all three sections can open.

Should prostitution be legal?
I see it CDawg's way too. Wish it weren't so, but life's not a movie. My prime was in college. Recently I've been dating more but nothing's really come of it. I seem to only get the crazies, that's always been the way. And the ones I click with are always taken. I hear that same story from a lot of people, and since it it's me too, I'm inclined to believe most of them. But I would never pay. I'm a normal looking dude who eats too much and doesn't work out. Yet I still believe I can hook up with anyone, on a good day, even though that's never been true. That's the way you have to live. I take what comes. I don't think transactions should be involved in it, but who am I to say. It's better to have that happening within society than outside of it.

An Ohio culture?
I'd never heard of wedding soup until I moved to Warren, and everyone there has it. I'm surprised they don't have it at McDonalds there.

If the center section doesn't open, I'd want that middle pane out of there! Too many panes in general. I had expected hi-rise type windows, solid glass with ventilation underneath. That, or the whole window or maybe half of it would open all at once. This looks cobbled together and not so appropriate for the building, like the McMansion front door on Bang & Clatter theater.

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
I peeked in from the bus this morning, and the main lobby is a lot more rotten than I had assumed. The interior looks no better than the facade, maybe worse. Long way to go.

Hahahahahaha! I'm glad the whole picture, and the wackiness of whole FCE/GCP conundrum, is finally coming to light.

Should prostitution be legal?
Hypothetically, if I think people kneeling in church degrades the individual... that has no bearing on their right to do it, or my right to stop them. Let freedom ring!

That's not what I expected at all. But it's better than a stick in the eye.

Should prostitution be legal?
1.) Can you really look your kids in the face and tell them your living involves having sex with strangers. 2.) I will not even compare coal mining to having sex for money. That is absurd. 3.) That holds true with alot of things. Do drugs hurt others if you are the only one doing them. If you are driving 150 mph on a freeway in the middle of night with no one around, should you be exempt from a ticket. 4.) Same as above. Your body is your body. If it dosent effect anyone else, go do it. 5.) I'll agree with that. But the government should think of a more creative way to increase tax revenue. And they shouldn't have to waste their time on writing legislation for prostitution. 6.) Alot of times, prostitution does involve a dangerous criminal....pimps are not really the safest of people to be around. 7.) Sure. 8.) Lets see what positive effects it has on those states. 9.) I do not agree to those comparisons...especially marrying for money. 10.) I don't think protitutes get beat up because it is illegal. Probably get beat up because a man paying for something thinks he should get "more bang for his buck". Nothing at all would change here, and you actually brought up one of the main reasons it is illegal. Think to yourself why it was made illegal years ago, and it wasn't for religious purposes. Think of those reasons. It wasn't made illegal for the heck of it. 1.) Same goes for financiers and oilmen right now. Immorality comes in many forms. 2.) I don't get that either. 3-4.) Your sarcastic point about the freeway has unintended merit. 5-6.) If it's legal, there are no pimps. Driving popular markets into the "black" causes trouble. 7.) Sure. 8.) People like those states more than they do Ohio. Closer call on RI, to be sure. 9.) I think those comparisons are dead on-- especially marrying for money. A is A. 10.) Giving prostitutes a legal cause of action, one unhindered by their own "unclean hands," would give them a giant weapon to point at abusive clients.

Rep. Austria gets right with history: FDR didn't start Depression
I think part of Biden's intended role, from the outset, is to periodically get thrown under the bus. That may also have been W's intended role.

Rep. Austria gets right with history: FDR didn't start Depression
The propriety of redistributing wealth is an area where thoughtful people may disagree. I think it's overdue.

Cleveland: Retail News
So true. But my point remains, experiences of a highly educated and enlightened crowd may differ markedly from those of the average whomever.

Rep. Austria gets right with history: FDR didn't start Depression
I see this as mostly analogous to the Biden gaffe. Both had a fundamental misconception about what happened back then. It makes you wonder how both guys got where they are, but when so many of your statements are recorded, I guess you're bound to screw up some. One significant difference, though, is that Austria was mixed up as to causation. That is a higher level of mental oopsie than what year did something happen. If FDR's actions were harmful, are you asserting a continuation of Hoover's approach would have had better results?

Cleveland: Innerbelt News
Yes. The GCBL article develops the "talking points" well http://www.gcbl.org/transportation/bikes/bike-lane-on-innerbelt-bridge I hadn't looked at it before... I like the talking points, but the whole thing really is kind of bike-heavy. As discussed over in the bike thread, there is some alarming hostility out there toward bikers, and I don't know that it carries over to pedestrians. Maybe if the two switched positions in the argument, the whole thing might be better received.
-
Cleveland: Innerbelt News
For the record, we're not just talking about a bike path but a pedestrian path as well, right?

Rethinking Transport in the USA
Ha ha...If they're getting a public bailout, then public transport is probably the way to go. Deleted myself... comment was far too hostile...

Should prostitution be legal?
I'm not going to blast anyone on this, but aren't you lucky society approves of the things you like to do. I view this like I do most other social issues: Regardless of what I like personally, who am I to exert dominion over my neighbor if they want to do something different? If they're hurting me, that's another issue. Religion is a "gateway" to all sorts of carnage, historically-- I daresay it's responsible for a lot more heartache than prostitution ever could be. All the same, people have a right to their religion, no matter how much I may personally disagree.

Good points, Htsguy and MTS. I'd like to know more about delivery. The only people I know who use it also have a stay at home spouse to coordinate it-- delivery can't just walk into a locked house. Then again, I have a stay at home roommate, so this could work for me. On the married couples issue, the experiences recounted here are different than mine. Most married couples I know both work as much as they can, and family pitches in with child care whenever possible. I know of zero households that can get by on a single income, though I can think of one with domestic help. But they both work and have no kids, or they could never afford domestic help. It sounds sometimes like the greater UO community (not so much posters, but people in posters' circles) is noticeably more well off than the average. Expenditures and comfort levels that are discussed frequently on here just don't seem common around town, you know? I only say this because it's something to keep in mind when we discuss market issues. It underlies my belief that downtown Cleveland needs a Penney's before it needs $1000 purses.

Which middle class is that? The ones I know are all over the hard work component, but they're a lot less concerned about taxes than they are about money being "given away to people who don't work" through free market channels.

Cleveland: Retail News
Gotcha, but do all local markets hold WSM hours? It really seems odd. I can get behind closing malls. But it's really frustrating, being a single person with normal business hours, that many retailers and services are generally unavailable to me. For me to get something drycleaned is a logistical nightmare, even though my house is surrounded with drycleaners.

Cleveland: Retail News
Hard to understand why retailers are still open primarily during office hours. Families no longer have stay at home spouses to do the shopping. West Side Market for example, the hours are completely obsolete. Maybe the rise in people working from home counteracts this some. But still, I am surprised more retailers aren't closing during mid-day and staying open at night and on weekends more.
