  1. Gonna have to agree with Palijandro here, for the most part. I know a lot of teachers and the points he's making are made by all of them. I recently read a report commissined by the Cleveland Schools in the wake of the 2007 SuccessTech shooting, and it made similar points. With some kids the problems at home are severe enough that expecting them to perform in school is irrational. Their coping mechanisms are not conducive to anyone learning, or to civilization generally. This problem goes far beyond the schools and so must the solution.

  3. Supoosedly yes, but that would only be filling a vaccuum. It wouldn't bring UC anywhere near the amenity level of downtown. Not to bring other threads in, but compared to downtown UC is also very difficult to get into and out of. To me this isn't even a close question. Downtown is where you have people gather. It would also be possible, though senseless, to put this thing in Streetsboro. I'm sure somebody could make a case for it. That doesn't mean Streetsboro should get serious consideration.
  4. Unless you're liquidating, your debts are not absolved. A chapter 11 DIP plan would involve paying things off gradually, though perhaps writing them down-- and that's where the suppliers could be hurt. There are less damaging ways to force a new business model on them, like setting conditions on the bailout funds, or like a direct government buy-in. I'm all for a new business model.
  5. Nightlife/streetlife and massive hospital complexes do not mix. We want this to be an all-purpose CC, not just a medical mart (whatever that actually is... a concern that hasn't come up for a while). University Circle is very very short on amenities. Downtown may not be where the bio-research is going on, but it's still the playground.
  6. Airlines are analogous to Yellow Cab or Hertz, not GM. The question is whether airlines would still buy from a bankrupt Boeing. The chief concern is whether service and spare parts would still be available in 5-10 years. Chapter 11 could drive some suppliers under, thus the answer might be no. It really is a different animal because of the product lifespan and the specificity of parts. Direct government assurances of survival (just like the ones NY financial firms are getting) would make automaker bankruptcy much more palatable.

  8. I'm not in bankruptcy, but I see it very differently. I think there is something to the claim that people will be terminally disinclined to buy from an automaker in chapter 11. I do not understand why similar measures and similar concerns aren't being discussed for the financial companies getting bailed out.
  9. The 2012 theory sounds better when it's explained as a 4-dimensional hypersphere. I'm not doing that here today. It doesn't necessarily predict an end but a change. I give it more credence than most other astrology, which is still very little. Edit: My ad says "Latino Romance," although 2 of 3 pictures are females, so it should say "Latina Romance."
  10. They should quit putting things in downtown Manhattan too. What an obsolete location, everything has moved up the street from it. It's only still there because of those stupid docks.
  11. They really should do U-pass at Case. It's one of the best things CSU offers. Unfortunately, many CSU students go nuts when they get billed for it. They hate that is isn't optional. But there's no way RTA would offer such a price break ($25 for the equivalent of 4-5 monthly passes) if it were optional. I always worry that CSU's going to cancel it, under pressure from anti-transit suburban kids. You would think that kids shelling out about $35k in tuition alone, an extra $25 a month would not be such a big deal. That battle gets fought at CSU too. I had to talk my one friend out of raising a big stink last year.

  13. Large roaches are not uncommon in downtown buildings, unfortunately. Be glad you don't live in the state office building. It's really potluck throughout the area. RS is also known for bedbugs, which I haven't heard of anywhere else in Cleveland. I've heard way too many accounts to believe they're "on the ball" with exterminating there.

  15. Agreed. I had thought the pictures showed significant buildable land around this thing, particularly in front of it. But the flats/port site is far from ideal for this while the mall site pretty much is. I hope this becomes a construction progress picture thread very soon.

    That drives me nuts. They're lazy about the clock. Other times they'll use up a ton of shot clock selecting between 5 different long-range jump shots.
  19. Wolstein had an option arranged for the Eaton project, and it sounds like he believes that option is still his. Either it is or it isn't.
  20. Tomorrow is here, but tomorrow is bad for the midwest if we don't have a role in it. I'm not convinced right now that we can lead the way in energy or biotech. That's what everyone's trying to do, at the same time, and other regions are more flush with resources. Why we aren't developing a domestic rail industry is beyond me. I agree with David's point that the auto bailout should involve them being forced to diversify into rail. At the immediate moment they do need sales, which is why I don't object to a purchase credit.
  21. I remember that debate now. Cleveland needs to remove all height maximums from its zoning and replace them with minimums. Nip that right in the bud.

    Same thing happens when you're at Detroit and 25th needing to get across the bridge. The next bus could come up 25th... or it could come up Detroit, and stop at a completely different place. Every morning, I and several others do a little dance, running back and forth to make sure we don't miss one while waiting oh so specifically for the other.
