  1. Not only that, we need a more balanced legislature. Local and state politics is everything. I like this idea of the cities forming a bloc, though it might need to include all the Warrens and Springfields to be effective.

Remember the Rockometer guy? That was a hoot.

I really think this deserves its own facility, ideally a comics hall of fame. It's crazy to me that we haven't done more with this.
  4. But this is also catering to those who live in and around UC. Lack of access to the freeway system has held that area back for too long. Gentrification should have started there years ago. I think this project will help it along considerably. Some people didn't want it but others did, and the latter group is not entirely from Westlake. Not by a longshot. Besides, living in Westlake and working in UC is not a crime, even if it's not the choice I'd make.
  5. Monica Potter from Con-Air?
  6. ^ Again you're only addressing one type of use by one type of person. And even then, if those commuters want dense mixed-use urban living, their choices are limited in the immediate UC area. That's not the fault of any road or freeway, that's bad planning policy on Cleveland's part and it has consequences. Forcing people to zig zag through a bunch of traffic lights solves nothing on the demand side. And believe it or not, lack of freeway access has been hurting demand in that area for a long time. Meanwhile most of Cleveland's gentrification is taking place right off of I-90.
  7. All of the above? Maybe Columbus, I don't know. Most of the country is south and west of here. Maybe they just want a shawarma and they heard about a place on 117th.
  8. This being a 2-way street, it will also serve a lot of vehicles originating in the UC/Heights area.
  9. Another reason I generally oppose new landscaping... if you don't spend money on it nonstop, it starts looking terrible quickly.

You're right, although that Ganley dealership gets my business because they're accessible via train. It's super convenient. Station location is terrible though. There's not even a complete sidewalk path to Lorain, they make you cross back and forth over the access road.

That doesn't justify it though, especially if they're trying to get more live humans to attend live games. As for replacing people with computers... what good is saving money if the method wipes out your customer base?
  12. Since you called me ''Beavis'' in another thread...It's a business newspaper But*head, commenting on the vibrancy of downtown CLE on Cavs parade day. Using this day, the commentary hopes to see general vibrancy downtown which is generally considered to be a population of 25,000. Increasing the city's taxpayer population translates into business, which creates taxes, which create city services etc, which creates visitors-tourists-business meetings-conventions-sporting&special events that fill hotels that create employment, which creates stability, which creates better schools...get the picture? Increasing the downtown population can contribute to a nice multiplier. Downtown is a place for everybody, so your point is misplaced anyway. "Beavis" was in response to you typing out "LOL," which in context was similar to saying "get the picture?" in the sense that it's inappropriately hostile. It's not at all clear that downtown population is required for any of those other goals you list. One could even argue that different goals involve different types of amenities and investments, so there is a degree of mutual exclusivity in play. I found Marinucci's statement to be very odd, given that the parade was so distinctly visitor-oriented. Odd enough to point out, but not important enough to fuss about in this particular thread. So I bid you good day.
  13. Why does it always have to be about residents? The parade was a perfect example of downtown being a place for everybody.
  14. The leadership of Cleveland openly wants to destroy it, which is the biggest problem we face as urbanists here. Cannot emphasize this enough. It is not a function of market forces, it is not a matter of no choice, it is a series of willful destructive acts in the face of better alternatives.
  15. No one has any right to demand that a major city avoid building around them, certainly not on a waterfront near downtown. You've got to be kidding me. This idea of having a suburban cul-de-sac off 65th and Detroit, with tower-like views, is absolutely insane. Now we have people shouting down developers who want to build actual towers nearby. It's elitist, it's destructive, and once again for emphasis-- it's insane. Time for some serious pushback.
  16. The trade-off is a false choice though. I'm glad Clark is still so active commercially, but apartments on top could only help all those consumer-oriented businesses. And the housing around Clark is in nasty shape. This neighborhood deserves a few rental units that are up to code.
  17. That food court has like 2 tenants left, it's depressing, so I really hope this is true.
  18. I'm a frequent critic but I thought RTA handled the parade well, considering the enormity of the task. On days like that we should feel lucky to have the system we have.
  19. Interesting that Scene does not mention that he likely got the job because his dad is a former prosecutor and is politically powerful. At least when Kerry McCormack got appointed they mentioned his dad in passing. Children of powerful parents are incapable of getting jobs on their own merit? That happens, but so does the other thing. And nepotism has been so pervasive around here that presumptions do arise, fair or not.
  20. I can't believe we would throw the bus system under a bus in favor of downtown tranquility, two words that don't even make sense together. Nothing against tranquility, but some people need those buses and need them to get through downtown efficiently. And those people matter.
  21. Probably the same staff member who thought the crowds were just gonna let LeBron's car through on Wednesday.
  22. We had a parade today and 1,000,000 people showed up.

That's my favorite picture of the day. You feel like you can see the whole crowd there. Nice to have wide streets on a day like this one. Nice to have Mall B as well. Any guesses how many people were standing on Mall B? 50k?

There won't be many commuters so that should help. My downtown employer is closed tomorrow, probably most others too.

There's some litter but no damage that I can see. Nobody was interested in wrecking stuff, which I think says a lot about the town.
