  1. Nicest buildings in it are the old warehouses.
  2. That's the one. I remember saying something like "how is tearing everything down supposed to be sustainable?"
  3. ^^ I remember a picture, some time back, which I think was posted by Musky. Not sure. But it's on here.
  4. My satire meter says TILT... do you really find that building ugly? I think it's one of the best in town.

You are correct, I misunderstood your post.

^ Are you saying that including Akron wouldn't help Cleveland's stats? These numbers suggest that it would, unless I'm reading them very wrong. Any guidlines that put Dayton in Cincy but separate Akron from Cleveland are questionable on their face.

If that growth shows no signs of being transit-oriented, then on what grounds is it attributable to the HL? A lot of this stuff was either in the works or practically inevitable. Hospital growth comes to mind.

To paraphrase my 7th grade math teacher... I'm not Jesus, I'm 327. Now that you have the messenger's head on a stake before your castle walls, would anyone like to contend that the HL was properly targeted toward an upscale market, which was the suggestion from the posted article that I attempted to refute?

Given his investments, what are the chances Maron would say otherwise? My opinions on this subject are based on the aggregated experiences of many regular riders, myself included. I'm not likely to change them based on assertions in the Nashville City Paper. Neither is anyone else who's personally familiar with the system. What concerns me is that the system still receives a lot more praise than it does improvements. Most of the "outside praise" we've seen is really just quoting self-interested local parties, which should be transparent at this point. It's been repeated at intervals for years now. Positive user reviews are few and far between, almost as if the system just opened and we're all abuzz with anticipation. For years now.

Yes. "Dozens" is a very small figure in this context, chosen for humor. I would not attribute a significant amount of DT population growth to the HL, any more than I would have attributed to the 6 or any other bus route. In both cases you're better off driving (or probably biking) time-wise. The HL is used primarily by people who aren't in any particular hurry. Speed is hardly the only disappointment for "choice riders." Others include the inadequate stations, the crowded-by-design vehicle interiors, and the infamous fare machines.

Wow, Dayton and Toledo each lost 10k people within 2 miles of city hall. I'm surprised they had that much to lose. Toledo at least has some dense residential near downtown, but apparently none of it has been maintained since I lived there in the late 90s.

The route chosen for our BRT, and the development plans along most of it, leave little room for "choice riders." All it really does is connect workplaces to other workplaces. There's a semblance of a Park n Ride option at Windermere, but "choice riders" aren't likely to leave their cars there all day. I'm sure there are dozens of Clinic and UH employees living downtown, but what an extravagant thing to build for them.
  13. White Hat should not still be open. If they are, that's sad. A lot of my friends are teachers and the market here is abysmal. Experience with LD/special ed/behaviors is a major plus. Unless you do that or math/science, your best option is teaching online. That doesn't pay nearly as well, and you have hundreds of students at once, but you do get to work from home.

I do think the offense will begin to click at some point. By midseason we may be competitive.

In terms of local govt jobs, I agree that short term pain = long term gain. Still a long way to go but the progress is encouraging. As for these figures, they don't account for what I consider the most important factor: low pay for too many of the new jobs. 100% employment at $10/hr is a disaster.

One could read this as a critique of us, or of the architecture we've been presented recently. I'm going with the latter.
  17. My demographics are similar to yours and I would not consider moving to a small town anywhere. Young people are converging on cities all over the country, not just here. It may be that small county seats like Monroe and WCH have already outlived their purpose. When our economy was farm-based and information traveled by horse, we needed a "capitol" every 30 miles or so.
  18. As such, growth is most likely to come from out of state-- people for whom small town Ohio is something exotic.
  19. Wilmington took a huge hit when DHL closed its facility there. Check out Granville, you'll be glad you did.

By "connections" I meant having a job essentially waiting for you. Some of my classmates have found steady work without that, but it appears that the majority have not. Many of them got jobs they mistakenly believed to be steady.
  21. Other indicators need to make big strides before this one goes anywhere but down. Instead, these numbers suggest we're going right back the way we came, blowing bubbles in the wind.

Unless they have serious connections, they should stop right now. No sense throwing good money after bad. There's one more Unless: If that's what they really want to be, they know what their only choice is. I'm in that boat and so are others. But not everyone. The ROI of law school has probably never been lower than it is right now. If that's the main goal, that's when my first Unless applies.

This may be especially true in journalism, but it's pretty much true for all professions. Wealthy people can pursue career avenues that are inaccessible to working people. I had to forgo a number of opportunities during law school in order to pay for it. More than once, the school expected me and others in my situation to contribute funds toward special opportunities for wealthier students.
  24. There's a rough rendering upthread, but the 9/20/12 PD article posted above says they haven't settled on who's designing it yet.
