Cleveland: I-X Center
It's been on life support since Covid. Better the data center than another underwhelming trade or gardens show.

Mutual aid agreements and community partnerships can be helpful in those situations; call them soft examples of regionalism, which everyone here likes.

Chicago: Transit News
Plenty of brainrot going around these days. Though perhaps fewer trains can lead to fewer "incidents" if more normal people are on them? God knows it's been a rough 5 years. https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/illinois-state-budget-plan-deadline-mass-transit-funding-2026/ Illinois lawmakers pass $55 billion state budget, but fail to approve mass transit funding before end of spring session

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
Domestic air travel year-to-year is down 3%. International travel was down 10% in April but rebounded in May to being just under May 2024 numbers. Those trips are usually planned 3-6 months in advance, which may explain the stability. Canada obviously has collapsed (25%). Frankly, any international leisure traveler visiting the US needs their head checked. That would be like me going to Moscow in June.

The homes at the Vantage (5225 Herman Ave) are going for the mid $700s despite it being a slightly rundown street. And they're already pending.

IF this project happens in the next five years, I guarantee you Jimmy isn't renting out those spots for $5 a day with shuttles to compete with Hopkins lots. There must be tons of available parcels where he or another developer could without all the headache.

Well, someone is buying those $500,000+ homes, and I sure don't see MAGA signs there. https://www.redfin.com/OH/Cleveland/7541-Father-Frascati-44102/home/79889547 Woof.

For a project that's at best 3-5 years away? How many businesses even last that long?

I take the train to and from Hopkins 99% of the time, so I'm not familiar with their parking situation, but it is pretty bad, no? If so, I don't see an issue with Jimmy renting out lots for people who need to get in and out. A true international airport needs capacity parking, and my understanding is we aren't even close. Let Jimmyworld absorb some parking, and the city can focus attention/finances on more pertinent maintenances and capital investments rather than new garages or lots. And city/county isn't backing these bonds - state, another issue sadly - so it seems the taxpayer is mostly off the hook with this fiasco. Bibb needs to drop this nonsense suit next, since those big law bills must be in the 6 or 7 figures range now, and for what?

I don't know who actually buys stuff from those stores, but they are very charming, and tarot readings have a supernatural veneer - I don't f with those even when the logic part of my brain rolls its eyes. Plus these stores sell uncommon books, candles, teas, incense, etc, that make for great gifts. Beats an Amazon gift card. Crystals are like flowers. They don't necessarily do anything (though crystals do absorb light), but they're pretty and hey, if benign pseudoscience works for some, then great! There's some value in placebo. Astrology, however, I'll never understand, and pushes past my suspension of disbelief.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
For the best too. Amazon completely downscaled HQ2 in Virginia despite hundreds of million in subsidies and cash grants, some of which were fortunately clawed back. And the existing campus has been shedding jobs the last few years. AOC won that battle. But Amazon got a s**tload of free data from hundreds of desperate cities. So the bad guys scored a win too.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
There are multiple AI videos that extrapolate old postcards and add simulations to give viewers an approximation of the neighborhood. The sound is probably non-AI. I wish I knew how to feed postcards into AI machines and do the same for Cleveland. Grainy black and white footage only goes so far.

There have been so many contradictory studies I have no clue. Gonna search for city revenue numbers throughout the 90s to see if the team's absence had any noticeable financial effect those three years.

Think about it this way. City and County will no longer be losing money on the team, plus there's no urgency the stadium gets demolished ASAP. It's still functional, can host events whether the .336 teams plays there or not, and can be repurposed to something more beneficial to the region. At the very least, this fiasco and endless discourse will be over.

Don't know what State will decide, but local money is looking less and less likely. That's a big win for the city. And Jimmyworld will have a negligible number of hotels and restaurants -- if any. I don't see a 200-room hotel and several eateries /sports bars having much an impact on existing hotels and restaurants. The only real concern is how many, if any, downtown events this fantasy dome MIGHT cannibalize.

“The additional events, and expected growth in live entertainment, are an economic opportunity for the entire region.” Imagine believing that. "the Browns should find a way to send “more than $150 million” to Cleveland to help develop the lakefront." And why on earth should they? If Haslam were to volunteer an abitrary amount like that, I imagine there are endless better options. The city and county have had almost a century to develop the lakefront, and have done nothing outside several underperforming museums and very recent housing. Some pie-in-the-sky donation from the Browns is pennies for any significant development and is completely performative. "GCP called this Browns’ stadium debate a pivotal moment" It really isn't despite catching a lot of attention. This isn't 1995.
