Frankly Hts, that's actually an interesting theory. I wonder if it could play out realistically. I guess the closest (and it's not a great one) example to that is with Obama's military intervention in Libya, and the tea baggers moaning every step of the way, resulting in a relatively quick and painless mission..... Eh, as i'm writing this i see the example doesn't work. But still, consisting how simple minded so many of these tea baggers behave, i could see some political manipulation with encouraging highway transport resulting in their changing their tune.
  2. Fair enough, though I often see quite a few police cars when I'm down there, and I doubt they're ambulatory in nature.
  3. The casino was very pretty on Saturday night, plus the garage nearby didn't look junky in the least.

    Yeah, keep telling yourself that.

The tea party has no real issue with public transport but rather with President Obama and everything he supports. A fringe, hate-inspired group no better than the Klan or Black Panthers, though with a bit more political sway. When Obama's no longer president in 2016, they too will slink away, with the occasional harder liner here and there. And their various wars will also disappear since the target of their venom will no longer be in office.
  6. I have a hunch it is akin to forced busing in which it's a feel-good policy that looks good on paper (to assuage guilt, promote social justice, improve the lives of the poor by putting them in income earning communities), yet ignores the real and obvious ramifications. Same mistakes, different eras.
  7. You lost me a little there, but that's due mostly due to my exhaustion, not your writing style. My view is that (Greater) Cleveland has a knack of catering to low income people at the expense of tax paying populace. Look at the problems with that w25 section 8 tower, or the susidized apartments along the lake in Euclid and Wickliffe (or one of those other W suburbs). Like it or not, low income equals a rise in crime, and that's the kind of $hit Ohio City doesn't need. Why pitch in obstacles to a neighborhood that is transforming for the better.
  8. Serious question: Since i work 80 hrs a week on two jobs, can i count as double employed?

A silly, stupid article that does at least touch on one important point, and that is why does American society focus so much on perceived white racism (and homophobia) while virtually ignoring black. Now that's a topic people are too afraid to discuss, or perhaps they don't know how, and this article should have delved in that controversy instead.
  10. Pretty good martini at chocolate bar last night. Pretty massive crowd too
  11. Well 3 good starting pitching outings, two of which were pleasant surprises. It doesnt make up for the offensive problems...but it certainly makes things interesting
  12. A charming and honest article

The ending to Camp Sleepaway. Holy $hit!
  14. Upon reflecting on yesterday's slap to the face, I've gone from being furious at Acta to just apathetic about the whole thing. I can't really get too upset with the offense since they're trying the best they can (well, maybe). And I'm not even pissed at Perez - it's not like I could do any better on the mound, and it's not his fault he sucks. We lost because of terrible coaching decisions; everything else is secondary, and judging my Acta's press conference, he doesn't know dick. But at least Masterson was a stud. We have a real ace. Last year was not a fluke. And i'll take a loss, even one like this turd, in exchange. But ultimately, eh, I'm just feeling indifferent about the game.
  15. Mentor beach for the day, followed by fishing along that Perry harbor in the early evening. It's as relaxing a day as you get.

But the supreme(?) court penalized/threatened to penalize that one religious college - Bob something or another - if they continued to forbid interacial relationships, and the school backed down. Seems like there's a precedent, at least on an ethical level (forget protected class issues for now). I also don't really see first amendment issues here. No one is going to jail if they refuse to marry gays in my hypothetical.

I agree churches shouldn't be forced to marry people - how would that even work - but i would like to see those that don't incur a penalty like losing their nonprofit status. Seems like a fair trade.

Marathoning mad men. I'm trying to get into it (middle of season 2), but it's taking some effort. Too many unlikeable characters is the problem, with some slow pacing here and there.
  22. Citizenship via military service or high school graduation, ala Robert Heinlein, would be a start. The rest of your question is going to eventually result in this board getting locked down, so i'll just leave it at that.
  23. ^^I would argue that we have long given up trying to fix education. Our avoidance of the real issues are evident that we, law makers, society in general, are not really willing to fix these problems. We just distract ourselves with these side issues that ultimately have no bearing on uncaring students and their families' apathy.
  24. Kjp, there may be some value in the effort on an emotional level, but it doesn't come close to addressing the root problems of our academic failures, because we are unwilling to address reality and instead come up with feel-good, politically correct band aids that have failed miserably for over 40 years. I find all these efforts and plans and political self-congratulations pointless and cliche. You want to fix public education? It cannot be done in today's inner city communities, not on any grand and meaningful scale unless we make some radical changes to federal and local laws that would never ever happen. School closings, teacher reviews, union compromises, etc, have nothing to do with our academic failures, yet we focus on those because we're too afraid to attack the real culprits: kids and parents, for various complex reasons, who just don't care and challenge attempts at reform on every level. Not all of them, but enough to destroy any attempts at an education comparable to our western and eastern friends overseas. Personally I believe we need to rethink the idea of what an American citizen is defined as, and tie it in with education on some level..... which of course would never happen. And yet it would make a world of difference if our governments had the balls to pass such reforms.
  25. A nice try but a worthless effort, and we all know it in our hearts.
