US Economy: News & Discussion
Because housing is so ingrained with our economy on every level. It's the reason credit is still so hard to get as banks' balance sheets are still in chaos. Eventually, we will have spent over a trillion dollars on Freddie and Fannie alone. The housing crisis has decimated so many neighborhoods, townships and even cities, and as unemployment - and I'm talking about middle class employment, not some $8/hr jobs which may be increasing - continue to evaporate, the problem just builds and builds as more people walk away. Historically, housing has led our country out of recessions as well. Housing is absolutely indicative of our economy, perhaps more so than employment since, again, the rise of low paying jobs still count as jobs; thus, the employment numbers are complete baloney.

Gas Prices
Eighth, man, I gotta say you are way off. Even if you're lucky enough to live by reliable public transportation that takes you everywhere, you don't see how insane gas prices eat up your discretionary income since they affect the price on everything? It won't matter if you're carfree - utilities and food are still rocketing due in great part to oil going up. It affects everyone and everything

US Economy: News & Discussion
Nope, the economy is still in the toliet. Housing hasn't even begun to get better with any macro consistency.

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
This is confusing. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/03/a_new_superman_movie_will_be_f.html "A new Superman movie will be filmed in Cleveland, Gov. John Kasich announces" Is this about Superman or just a biopic of his creators? How/when did Disney/Marvel get the rights to make Superman? According to this article, http://www.slashfilm.com/warner-bros-has-lost-krypton-will-lose-superman-in-2013/ , it's still a few years away from happening. And finally, how the heck will this movie only cost $40 mill? Still, cool and completely surprising news.

Plus compensating for credit card fees, which are probably more onerous during bad economic times and high gas prices.

Cleveland: Downtown: Wendy Park
It is really surprising hearing all of this. I would go to Whiskey Island once a week over the summer and often ate at the restaurant. While there were some frat boy and white trash types, I have never experienced or noticed any problems or tensions or super drunkeness. Sure the restaurant got loud but not with that building tension you might find at a club. People must take it easy there on Sundays. I really can't recall any negative incidents there other than parking anxieties.

The food at Anatolia was crazy delicious last night: grape leaves, lamb shishcabob, some shrimp dish, some kind of (let me butcher the name here) bachlabah desert, couple glasses of yummy red, and the nicest and most attentive waitress ever despite the place being packed. One issue only: I must have misread the menu in the dark because I could have sworn my lamb said $8, not $16. If that's the lunch price only, well, I definitely misread the menu. Hopefully. No biggy though. Great dinner all around

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Hard to argue this one. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/02/cleveland_schools_at_bottom_of.html "CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An analysis of 2009 science test scores in 17 major U.S. urban districts ranks Cleveland near the bottom. Cleveland beat out only Detroit on fourth-grade tests given nationwide, according to results released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics. The district's eighth-graders topped peers in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Detroit. " And here's a quote from a poster which I find very apt: "near the bottom of the US, when the US is at the bottom of advanced nations...."

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
I think you guys are overthinking this. Maybe Gilbert just wants to test the waters before putting in the permanent casino. Maybe he doesn't intend on phase 2 due to the economy's instability? Well, so what? Better something rather than nothing. Besides, who really loses in that situation anyhow, it's not like other businesses are clamoring for that space. I just wouldn't worry about it

Cleveland: How many of you would appreciate a true cocktail lounge in the WD
Cool beans. Where on W6 is this club opening? Great idea with a cocktail club. Diversify the area for the upper 20s and 30s crowd! I know I'd go. Also, I say mandate a dress code of at least slacks or business casual - it would be nice to have at somewhere classy in that area.

Gas Prices
I think there is a special kind of agony and fury that comes with high fuel prices, more so than increased taxes or other costs of living. I remember a few years back when we $4/gallon gas, and everyone was in this high tense, angry mood. People would stop going out if they didn't have to because there's just something so unsettling about gas doubling in cost. And if that becomes the norm, then there will be a huge response. We can't handle European costs of gas without their standards of tranportation, and I can see a migration to US cities that best match those countries'. Especially if $5+ is the new standard. And people can move quickly if motivated. Look at how fast whites moved away due to busing. 10s of millions of people just moved within a relatively short period of time, probably taking losses on their homes due to the immediacy of white flight.. Fear and anger does that to people, and fuel increases can be a hell of an impetus

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
So when does Mr. Budget Slash start work on refusing Ohio airline and highway subsidies? We gotta cut, cut, cut after all
-
Gas Prices
People will move if their costs warrant it, and $5+ Of gas might be the deciding factor for a ton of businesses and folks.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
And now it gets to host Obama today. Should be a nice crowd, pretty weather today, people walking around checking out the new buildings, taking photos, marveling at the school's accelerating capital improvents.. A good time as any for some national exposure.
