If gas goes up to $5+, I can see massive, massive migrations to cities with excellent pre-existing public transportation, with people virtually giving up cars for nonessential things. That means cities like NY, Chi-town, and San Fran will even become more desired business and residential hot spots.

I just finished the Jason Kidd series by John Sandord. Easily his weakest series, not even close to the Prey or Virgil Flowers stuff.
  3. Shooters has actually been booming this winter so you can get your drink on now. Place2bseen has done an incredible job hosting massive parties there on weekends.
  4. Thanks surf, but those ideas are mostly cosmetic improvements. I really don't see any realistic way the stores can stay in business, even if these ideas are implemented. Not with online shopping, wall-mart venues, and the rise of ebooks - people at the end of the day can't afford the markups when such vastly inexpensve alternatives are available.
  5. Is South Euclid still considered a stable city? My sister had to pull her kid from the school system due to the inner city levels of chaos from the students, and I'm pretty sure I've read on Cleveland.com it has an above average number of foreclosures and lowered property values. Plus there are quite a few empty stores along Mayfield/Green.
  6. It's both ugly and beautiful. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE.
  7. I'm much more an Indians fan than Browns or Cavs and nothing would make me happier than their having a successful 2011 year. That said, it's important to be realistic about the team. Barring another impossible-to-predict 2007 Carmona or 2008 Cliff season, here's the reality. 1. Our pitching is truly miserable, and we are relying a hell of a lot on Carmona (the assumed ace despite a bland career outside of one great season) and Talbot (good first half, then a long rough patch throughout the rest of the season). We have glorified minor league pitching at the 3-5 spots, and while there is some love for Masterson and Huff, I don't see it. Sure they all might have 15 win seasons and pitch 200 strikeouts - baseball is unpredictable that way. However, we can't anticipate or depend on a miracle, and these guys just don't have it if you look at their numbers and how they stack up to other teams. At least not based on their careers so far. 2. Third base. 3. Virtually the same lineup as last year with not one major trade (no offense Orlando or Austin (what's with these city named players)). Who knows if Grady is finished? One thing is for sure - I'm pretty pessimistic with Grady being Grady and can't imagine him playing a full season even if there is a return to form. And when I'm seeing virtually the same team as last year 60 win team, then %&$@. 4. The year 2011. I don't know if there has ever been as awful a year for Cleveland sports, really any city, as 2011. It's...stunning, and the lack of momentum and abundance of doom and gloom can't help. Fans will support the Browns through anything and the Cavs have had a surprising number of spectators to their embarrassment, but I feel the Tribe, barring an amazing season, will feel the blunt of fan burnout. I mean, we can only abused so much by our sports teams. They've done a number of the fans, that's for sure. 5. Injury bug. It does seem to hit us harder (I mean, Santana, really? Already?) than most teams, and they always have more in depth rosters. We seem to have an awful lot of bad luck there. 6. Lack of momentum. The Indians have two players of any legitimate interest in the MLB: Choo and Chris Perez. Otherwise, they're just an invisible team, no different than the Pirates really, and that kind of apathy hurts a team in so many ways. Again barring some miracle seasons, we only have one reliable hitter: Choo. That's it. Asdrubal and Santana might be good, but only Choo is reliable, someone who is mentioned with respect by other teams and broadcasters. How can we compete with that? The fact is we don't have the stuff to compete, and we have to hope that some 1994 or 2005 out of the BLUE magic happens. If you're a baseball purist, then I don't know how you can say we have what it takes to be competitive. I mean, where on earth are we even going to pull 70 wins from at this point? ...please let me be wrong
  8. Who can tell with this crazy winter
  9. Does Chicago really have worse schools/holding pens than Cleveland? There must be some good ones in the North side.
  10. I thought the article, as well as comments, were very fair.
  11. Very interesting read. It does seem like good material for a book This is just a kick in the balls.
  12. It's sad about Borders' closures, but we're just going to see another round of this in few years unless Borders gets its ass into gear and actually formulates a plan that will keep it competitive in the real world. Just some ideas off the top of my head. -Start having classes and lectures in the stores with free refreshments. Get those people inside and they will buy! -Put in restaurants in the stores - make them more a destination. -Get rid of that Kobe crap and develop your own unique e-reader. Make it completely different than the Nook and other e-readers. -Experiment with renting books (especially academic and SAT-type), both hard copy and electronic. -Diversify merchandise beyond those cards and board games. Partner up with an electronic developer and start distributing those kinds of goods. -Improve computer system. -Have some kind of computer lab station -Better customer support in the store. Trying to find someone to help is often cumbersome.

Waste of time, energy, effort, thought, priority, publicity, plus maybe the cop was acting like an idiot. There's no point in an empty apology.

Oh Jesus Kasich, not another pointless beer summit. Stop focusing on pointless issues like this and get to work stripping our budget and reforming our economy!
  15. Completely different personalities. I've never understood the dilemma with casinos - they are totally different markets than anything else we have downtown, and there is no way they're going to just eat up competitor's business.

Good crowd out there tonight. Team played well too. Take what we can get in this miserable season.

I started Under the Dome a little while ago, need to get back to it. It really is similar to the Stand.

Tried getting into the Fay scarpetta series. Book 1 was dull and book 2 isn't quite doing it for me either

The Descent is one of the best horror movies of all time. Great score as well.

    That film was remarkably bad
  21. As long as the place has a reasonable amount of security, then yeah, it could be a lot of fun

Just to follow up with my complimenting General Hospital, Michael, Jason & Carly ~ Carly Learns Of The Rape ~ 2/1/11 Despite the stigmas that daytime soaps may have, I'd say this scene is just masterful on every level. The acting, the pacing, the storyline, the realism - it's just damn good storytelling. And all the credit goes to Michael's performance.
  23. Perhaps he wasn't given enough "campaign contributions" and "personal loans" like the last time
